THE BIG CLIFF
The Big Cliff is a sandstone quarry from the 1800s.
It is the largest cliff in the vicinity and it attracts the most
climbers of any local cliff. The cliff height ranges from 20 feet
to a maximum of 60 feet. The sheer vertical Carboniferous Age
sandstone walls make for some of the very best face climbs in the
region. There are a multitude of drillmarks left from the
quarrying of the cliffs which helps to make many of the climbs
here possible. The color of the rock ranges from orangish brown,
indicating that there is iron in the rock to a gray color of the
main walls to a black color on some of the more exposed older
rock. There are many toprope possibilities, a few natural lines
that can be protected with gear and some bolted routes that are
in the 5.9 to 5.12d level. For additional information on The
Big Cliff visit the Logtown Alpine Club Press 1986
publication of A
Climbers Guide To the Cliffs Of Logtown, Ohio 1986.
To find the Big Cliff walk to the left (west) from the
pull off on Logtown Road. Scramble up to the Greenway Bike Path
across the road from the parking, walk on the Bike Path across
the stream and about 100 feet more till the trail picks up at the
end of the fence, follow the trail to get around the fence to the
old quarry road, follow this old road for 100 yards and the
cliffs will be on the right at the top of the hill. There is a
path which leads around to the top on the right side of the cliff.
