W. Bro. Dr. Narayanan Nair Vijayakrishnan Nair was born in Trivandrum on 21st November 1938 as the eldest son of late W. Bro. Dr. V.R. Narayanan Nair, the last Surgeon General of the erstwhile State of Travancore - Cochin, and the first Director of Health Services of Kerala. After his early education in Trivandrum he obtained his MBBS degree from JIPMER (Madras University), Msc. in Applied Nutrition and Public Health from National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad  (Osmania University) and M.Ph (Hon) from the Institute of Public Health, Manila. He is a Fellow of the Nutrition Foundation of India, New Delhi.

Under a Post Graduate Research Fellowship Award from the World Health Organization (WHO) he received special training in several countries like the USA, Japan, Guatemala, Thailand and Singapore. He has travelled extensively over the world.

   

W. Bro. Dr. Vijayakrishnan Nair started his career as Medical Officer in the Public Laboratory, Trivandrum and rose up to many positions such as, Assistant Director of Health, Kerala; Nutrition Adviser of India and Assistant Director General in the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health, Government of India.

He joined the WHO in 1978 as Regional Adviser in Nutrition for the Western Pacific Region, which is the largest region of WHO comprising of 35 countries with one third of the world's population. He was responsible for many programmes like Prevention of Blindness, Care of the Elderly, Maternal and Child Health, Mental Health, Health Services Research etc. He had also served as WHO representative to the Philippines and Malaysia.

In 1988 he was promoted as Director and was the senior most Director when he retired in December 1998, a very honourable position which none from Kerala and no Indian in that region held before. He had contributed immensely in rebuilding the Health Services in many countries, for example the Peoples' Republic of China (after the Cultural Revolution), Post war Vietnam, the war ravaged Cambodia and Laos, and post colonial islands of the Pacific. He continues to be Secretary of the Public Health Ministers' Meeting, held once in two years, and as a Consultant to WHO. Many Governments have recognized his services and he could take pride of his contribution in alleviating the sufferings of millions as we profess to admire in Masonry. He had the uniqie honour of being a member of several WHO Expert Committees and continues to be an honorary Visiting Professor of several universities.

 
 

W. Bro. Vijayakrishnan Nair was initiated in Lodge Minchin, No. 2710. EC on November 2, 1963. He was a Founder Member of Lodge Trivandrum No. 168 under the Grand Lodge of India and was installed its W. Master in 1971. He resigned from that Lodge in 1992 following the temporary loss of amity between the Grand Lodges of England and India, and chose to continue in his Mother Lodge, Minchin. He was installed the W. Master of Lodge Minchin in 2000.

He was installed First Principal of Chapter Minchin, No. 2710 EC,  in 1975; Wy. Supreme Ruler of Trivandrum Conclave No. 127 in 1972; and W. Master of Sivagnanam Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 877 in 1999. He was elected to be the W. Commander of the Royal Ark Mariners Lodge Sivagnanam No. 877 for 2005.

He holds the rank of Past Deputy District Grand Director of Ceremonies in the Craft, Past Grand Bow Bearer and Past District Grand Assistant Director of Ceremonies in the Order of Secret Monitors, Past District Grand Tyler in Holy Royal Arch and Past District Grand Standard Bearer in Mark Masonry.

 

W. Bro. Nair is married to Radha Nair, daughter of late Wor. Bro. Dr. S.S. Pillai, a veteran Mason of his time. He has two daughters, the elder one is married to Bro. S. Kesavan Nair of Lodge Minchin, an upcoming ardent Mason and a good ritualist. His younger brother W. Bro. N. Jayakrishnan Nair is a senior active member of the craft and all the side degrees, besides being the Assistant District Grand Supreme Ruler in the District of Southern India of the Order of Secret Monitors. Bro. K. Madhavan Nair, his brother-in-law, is also a member of Lodge Minchin.

W. Bro. Vijayakrishnan Nair had been a good sportsman and had represented Kerala and Madras Universities in many events and won the S.W. India Golf Championship twice. He is one of the senior most and active members of Trivandrum Club, Trivandrum Tennis Club, Trivandrum Golf Club and India International Centre, New Delhi.
