History
For the last 50 years model
railway hobbyists have devised many
methods for locomotive
position detection.
Common
Detection Methods
-
Series relay - a relay is
connected between the power source
and the locomotive electric
motor, within an isolated block.
As the locomotive moves
into this block -- the relay operates.
-
Track switch - a small switch
is positioned such that the weight of the train will operate the mechanical
switch.
-
Magnetic reed switch - a reed
switch is positioned within the
ballast of the railway
track. A powerful magnet is positioned on the locomotive, as the locomotive
passes the reed switch it
operates the switch contact.
-
Current sensing - detection
of the locomotives electric motor current.
-
Opto Electronics - three basic
methods :- Photo diode/transistor -- IR-LED -- Laser.
