LocoTronics  offer a Infra Red option on all  Electronic Control Modules

The Infra Red Train Detector configuration is show :-
 

The infra red emitter, detector transistor , and amplifier components are mounted on
a separate small pcb ( less than an inch square (23 mm)). This enables simpler and more flexible choice of installation on the model railway baseboard.
3 wires connect this pcb to the electronic control module.
Supplied with 0.5 M length of connecting wires as standard.
The IR detector pcb will operate over  a distance of least 10 meters over these
3 wires - this enables all electronic modules to locate in one central location.
