| There are 8 sets of cards numbered from 1 to 8 in order of difficulty. The colours of the cards are in rainbow order to help you quickly find the ones you want to work with:- 1) red 2) orange 3) yellow 4) light green 5) dark green 6) light blue 7) dark blue 8) purple There are three sizes of uncut cards: A2, A3, A4 Uncut sets can be: put on the wall as posters used for playing games Sets can be cut up to make packs of playing cards in these sizes. Some of the activities suggested in the book and on the DVD will require additional sets of cards which can be purchased separately. The sets 1 - 4 in the A3 medium size also come with holes in each rectangle. The font on the cards was specifically chosen because of the correctly shaped letters. A Summary of the Cards Every sound has a picture/word clue (e.g. 'dog' for the /d/ sound). Students are encouraged to listen to the sounds carefully. Each sound card has a list of words in the manual containing that spelling pattern e.g. for 'old': cold, told, hold, gold, golden . . . Set 1 The Lower Case Letters (a, b, c . . .) Students may have many misunderstandings about these letters. Set 2 The Capital Letters (A, B, C . . .) The syllables (beats) are clapped: Bar ce lo na (4 syllables) Every syllable must have at least one vowel (see Set 5). . Set 3 Consonant clusters (bl, st . . .) and digraphs (ch, sh, th . . .) Set 4 More clusters (ck, mp, nt . . .) (ar, er, or . . .) Set 5 The short and the long vowels: e.g. for 'o' orange / open Set 6 The different ways to spell the long vowel sounds: a,e,i,o,u e.g. down the page for the /a/ sound: cake, rain, tray . . . Set 7 The Soft 'c' sound /s/ as in: cycle, city, centre The Soft 'g' sound /j/ as in: gentle, giant, gym and other patterns Set 8 ci, ti, si with the sound /sh/ as in special, station, mansion and other advanced patterns In the manual there are many 'tricks' (mnemonics) to use to help students remember how to read and spell the irregular words that give so many problems: e.g. enough, thought, said, what |
