Additional Uses for the Archway Cards

For one student, who hates letters but loves numbers, we stuck a small circular sticker on each card and numbered them in order in pencil.  As he learns the sounds, so the numbers are traced over in pen.  (There are 217 separate cards.)

Further to the idea above, the numbers of the alphabet are used to help with the spelling of tricky words.  For instance, if a = 1, b = 2,
                        1    14   25
then 'any'   is    a     n     y

Students who enjoy numbers may like this.

So 'any' is: one letter at the
start of the alphabet, one in the middle and one near the end.

'Many'  is   13  1  14  25         (middle, start, middle, end)

This sounds complicated but if other learning methods have not worked, this may.

The pictures on the cards can be used similarly.

                                 apple             net               yoyo
for 'any'                        a                  n                   y

or draw the pictures above the letters.
Make up a mnemonic: Are there 'any' apples and yoyos to throw into the net?

The A4 sized cards can be cut into strips across and stuck together so that all the red cards are in one strip, the yellow in another, and so on.  These different coloured strips are stood up on the table in front of the student in the order of the colours of the rainbow.

When the student is writing 'independently', if there is any hesitation, the helper can point to the card with the letters needed for the word.  For instance, if  'thought' is needed, the 'ought' card can be pointed to.
