April Picks ~ Poetry

Giggle Poetry: Think you're the next Shel Silverstein? Well, you can find out at this site, which sponsors ongoing competitions in a variety of poetry styles. See if you can match the online competition.
Scholastic Poetry Workshop: This is where to find favorite funny poet Jack Prelutsky. Share his ideas for brainstorming your own poems, including his "poem-starters" to get you going. Also at this site, check out poet Karla Kuskin, who also writes wonderfulbut more seriouspoems for kids.
Potato Hill Poetry: This is another site for kids who want to enter their best poetic efforts into a contest. Potato Hill offers an annual $50 cash prize for the best poems submitted to its site.
Stone Soup: This magazine lets kids submit poems to its web site. Why not see if you can get published? And while you're there, see what other kids are writing
Cobblestone Press: This company publishes Cricket magazine and offers ideas for celebrating National Poetry Month, including writing contests.
Poetry.org: Site for the Academy of American Poets. Features information about National Poetry Month, which they sponsor, an Online Poetry Classroom, and their National Poetry Calendar, as well as links to poets, poems, forums, etc.
Favorite Poem Project: Robert Pinsky, a poet and one of the creators of this site says, "If a poem is written well, it was written with the poet's voice and for a voice." The purpose of this site is to give a voice--through video and audio--to poets of all ages. You are encouraged to participate in the project by adding your own poetry.
