DISCOGRAPHY
The band first formed as a trio in 1980 called Composition on Sound.
Martin Gore went to school with Andrew Fletcher (Nicholas Comprehensive School of Basildon.) Martin had already been in Martin & the Worms and The French Look. The two joined with Vince Clarke and played to packed houses in the Bridge House Tavern in London where they were spotted by Daniel Miller of Mute Records.
Dave Gahan was often a roadie and mixer for the group, and was recuited as the permanent lead vocal. The group changed their name to DEPECHE MODE after a french magazine.
DEPECHE MODE means "fast fashion" or "rapid fashion". The band originally wanted the name to be pronounced Depechay Mode, but it didn't catch on.
Vince Clarke left the band shortly after the release of "Speak and Spell." At that time Martin Gore became principal song writer.
DEPECHE MODE had a string of great albums and record breaking singles.
Singles:
Just Can't Get Enough / See You / Get the Balance Right / Everything Counts / People Are People / Master and Servant / Shake the Disease / It's Called a Heart / Stripped /A Question of Lust / Question of Time / But Not Tonight / Strangelove / Never Let Me Down Again / Behind the Wheel / Everything Counts / Policy of Truth / Enjoy the Silence /Personal Jesus / World in My Eyes / I Feel You / Walking in My Shoes / Condemnation / In Your Room.
Alan Wilder left the band in 1996 to make Recoil in 1997, he had released quite  a few solo albums while with the band.
In 1996 Dave Gahan was having drug problems and the band took a break. They rejoined in 98/99 to try and put together some songs. After some vocal coaching for Dave they came out with Ultra.
Singles:
Barrel of a Gun / It's No Good / Home / Useless / Only When I Lose Myself.
The release of Exciter is coming out this May 2001.
