George also contributed lead/backing vocals to many Beatles songs. Post Beatles Career: George was the first Beatle to have a solo UK number 1 hit single. He achieved this feat with 'My Sweet Lord' (1971). This song reappeared at number 1 in the UK in 2002 following his untimely death. 'I Got My Mind Set On You' topped the US singles chart in 1987. George had 8 solo UK top 40 hit singles in his career. In the late 1980's he appeared as part of the all-star 'Traveling Wilburys' band which also featured fellow musical legends Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty. He also collaborated with Eric Clapton (his one-time best friend) on several occasions. Personal Life: George married Patricia Boyd on 21/01/1966. They divorced 11 years later (09/06/1977) due to Pattie's affair with George's friend Eric Clapton (Eric and Pattie later married and divorced). George and Eric remained friends despite this. George later married Olivia Arias on 02/09/1978. They had a son, Dhani (born 01/08/1978). George shunned his celebrity lifestyle during the 1990's instead turning his attentions to religious and spiritual causes. Olivia and George stayed together until his death. Death: George died of lung cancer in late 2001 after losing his decade long fight with the disease. He died in Los Angeles surrounded by family and friends. REST IN PEACE GEORGE HARRISON - a true musical legend. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Quotes: "To get a peaceful life I always let Paul have his own way, even when it meant that my songs weren't recorded. But I was having to record Paul's songs and put up with him telling me how to play me own guitar." - 1971 "I hope to have enough money to go into a business of my own by the time we do flop. It may be next week, it may be two or three years, but I think we'll be in the business...for at least another four years." - August 1963 "That man who offered us $5 million each was supposed to also promote a match between a man and a shark, so my suggestion was that he fight the shark and the winner could promote the Beatles concert." - On Bill Sargent's 1976 attempt to reunite the group for one last show. |
