| John married 2nd ca 1905, Susan Gibson from Maine, USA - when all the children had gone. She died in Westville. There were no children from this marriage. |
| John never fully recovered. It is said - He died of anemia due to loss of blood - but this was many years later. (We all know how these old tales have silly excuses to explain away their lack on knowledge.) ___ |
| Janet Paterson, wife of John Patterson told her daughter Agnes, that when she was a little girl, she used to go up to "the big house" & enter through the servants' door. "I believe the lady who lived there was a Lady Grey," she said. Note: There is supposed to be a ghost called the gray lady who roams Dalziel estate in Motherwell, Scotland. Could this have been the house? |

| When he was only five years old, John's father died. One day, soon afterward, John's brother Andrew was visiting. John asked Andrew if he could go home with him. His mother consented and away he went. Now this may all have been planned by Andrew and John's mother beforehand but in John's memory it was his idea. After this day, John made his permanent home with his half brother Andrew. John ended up being raised by Andrew. ___ |

| John came to Canada between August 1872 and March 1875 on the same boat as his brother Andrew. Andrew settled in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, USA. ___ |
Westville Nova Scotia is where John finally settled, he was a stationary engineer in the coal mines there. Among his many duties was to light the lamps in the mines. One day he was alone while oiling a machine. He cut his arm very badly and had to walk over half a mile to the neaest doctor while holding his wound and bleeding profusely all the way. |
