The first Paterson in my family was John Paterson born 1793 in St. Ninians Stirling, Scotland. He was a Coalminer. It is said that John had a sister "Miss Paterson" (I have no other name) who married a Mr. Corticelli. From a letter: The Corticelli connection - Mr. Corticelli was an Italian who came to Glasgow to manufacture thread. He married our great grandfather's sister (John Patterson 1796). When grandpa (John Patterson 1853) visited Scotland in 1911, he called on his Aunt - Mrs Corticelli. She lived in such an imposing house that grandpa went to the side door and she was put-out that a relative would do such a thing. Corticelli's were weavers and owned textile factory in Scotland. They were the manufacturers of . . . "Corticelli Thread". |
| Jeanie wrote a letter to her cousin Agnes Millar Patterson. (Agnes M. Patterson 1875 is the daughter of John 1851) (this was sometime after Agnes Millar Patterson & her daughter Janet 1902, had visited Scotland in the 1930's.) In the letter (not dated) Jeanie mentioned that her mother was still in bed; they were still living in the same house but the name of the street had been changed; and that Mr. & Mrs. Ferguson, as well as Jeanie's sister, Mrs. Adams, often asked after Agnes and her daughter Janet. Jeanie signed her name Low not Lowe. |

My mother had always been interested in history and liked nothing better than to dabble in genealogy. I say dabble because she had no modern way of researching and nowhere to do this research other than her kitchen table. Her only true form was through correspondences by way of letter writing. Yes, I said letter writing, the old-fashioned way. In her later years I was lucky enough to be helping her sort through pictures of ancestors when she came upon one such picture of a George Paterson b:1859 - her mothers first cousin. George had remained in Scotland when most of the family had come to Canada and the United States. Her remark to me while she fondly held this picture was, I could die a happy woman if only I knew; whatever happened to George and his family. Unfortunately, she died one year before I was able to make this connection by way of the internet. |
