Creating New
Meanings
in Work
Clockwise from left: Me, my
Husband
and my son
The idea of moving my life into a
new direction started when my son was over a year old. I was then (still
is!) a new mother in search for dhamma books for my little son. Just like
any mothers in this world, I wanted to give him an early introduction to
books and being Buddhist, children dhamma books seem just right for him
too.
There were not many children dhamma books in the market. All I saw under
the Religion-Children section of most bookshops were rows and rows of
books of other religions. Dhamma books for children seem like rare
entities.
I thought,
“How do Buddhist parents create awareness about Buddhism in their children
when resources are few and not easily available?”
That simple quest for children dhamma books led me to many deep, soulful
questions about my life. One thought led to another and I even began to
ponder of my very own contribution towards world peace and happiness. What
little part could I play to make our world a much loving and peaceful
place? Could I, in the process of making money, create something
good for the Buddhist community?
Guided by my strong spiritual beliefs, Little Sukha Production was born: a
home-based publishing house that specialises in children dhamma books. I
want my books to help bring awareness in Buddhist children about their
rich spiritual heritage AND promote love, peace and happiness in their
sweet, young hearts. Also, I have created myself, a new livelihood. A new
way of bringing in money for myself and my family
By that time, I had also left my career as
an engineering math lecturer to embark fully on being a mother and a
homemaker. Now, by starting my home-based company, I had become someone
more than just a homemaker; I’m also a writer and a businesswoman.
Together with a very supportive husband, we set up a work station in a
small corner of my house. I began illustrating, writing and editing in
between changing diapers and preparing meals for my family. It was a wild
adventure! Thank goodness I had my mother around to get me started (she
continues to provide support although we are living in different parts of
the country. Thanks mum!). The outcome: Four books are now published
(please see Our Products) and more to come.
Writing and publishing my books has made me grown into something more than
what I was before. I am always learning something new everyday. And it all
started with simple thoughts on sharing Buddhism with my son, together
with doing something good for the world.
