| A Fun-Filled Month! This month, we will be doing various fun activities for October. We will learn about scarecrows, leaves, and pumpkins and we will use our findings to enhance our writing skills. We will also learn about the importance of rules and voting and how such things help our communities to function. |

| California Social Studies Standards Covered: 1st Grade: 1.1 Students describe the rights and individual responsibilities of citizenship. Understand the rule-making process in a direct democracy (everyone votes on the rules) and in a representative democracy (an elected group of people makes the rules), giving examples of both systems in their classroom, school, and community. 1.5 Students describe the human characteristics of familiar places and the varied backgrounds of American citizens and residents in those places. Recognize the ways in which they are all part of the same community, sharing principles, goals, and traditions despite their varied ancestry; the forms of diversity in their school and community; and the benefits and challenges of a diverse population. 2nd Grade: 2.3 Students explain governmental institutions and practices in the United States and other countries. Explain how the United States and other countries make laws, carry out laws, determine whether laws have been violated, and punish wrongdoers. |
| Scarecrow Ideas In October, the students and I like to send home a blackline master of a scarecrow pattern. Students take these patterns home and use straw, crayons, glue, and sequins and other materials to create their scarecrow. We like to display these scarecrows on a Fall bulletin board. Scarecrow shapes for math center: students are supplied with paper shapes of various sizes. Students use them to build their own scarecrow.
