PUMPKIN MINI UNIT
In October, we will begin to study pumpkins and use our findings for many fun activities.  We can also use our findings for descriptive writing.  We will observe real pumpkins to brainstorm descriptive words and write them down on a graphic organizer that works for adjectives (bubble map).  We may find that they are squishy pumpkins, orange pumpkins, hard pumpkins, big pumpkins, little pumpkins and more.  Please see October Writing for more information on the writing process and below for some of our fun activities.

Pumpkin pudding

Take 2 boxes of vanilla pudding instant pudding mix and prepare following the directions on the box. Slowly stir in a can of canned pumpkin. (about 3/4 of the can), Add a sprinkle of cinnamon to make it even yummier. Let it sit for 5 minutes and it's ready to eat! Easy to make and kids love to help mix this up and eat it in dixie cups!
Here are two cute poems that can be enlarged or written on sentence strips for shared reading.  The first one has a student blackline master that kids can color and read themselves!

Pumpkin poem
One day I found two pumpkin seeds.
I planted one and pulled the weeds.
It sprouted roots and a big, long vine.
A pumpkin grew; I called it mine.
The pumpkin was quite round and fat.
(I really am quite proud of that.)
But there is something I'll admit
That has me worried just a bit.
I ate the other seed, you see.
Now will it grow inside of me?

(I'm so relieved since I have found
That pumpkins only grow in the ground!)
The Pumpkin Vine

(chant)

I looked out my window and What did I find?
Green leaves a-growing on my pumpkin vine. (2X)

Gree-een leaves, green leaves a growing (2X)
Gree-een leaves a growing on my pumpkin vine.

...yellow flowers growing
...black bugs crawling
...pumpkins growing

You can add silly things that the children come up with like.........
...apples growing
...watermelons growing
...etc!
