SCARECROW SONGS AND POEMS

SCARECROW CUT AND PASTE PATTERN CRAFT
In fall, there are many fun things to do with first and second graders!  The children enjoy learning about leaves, apples, pumpkins, scarecrows and more.  We like to read The Enormous Potato by Aubrey Davis.  We read it once and then the students are told that they will be expected to remember what takes place in the story (it is a fun story in which a farmer needs to enlist the help of other people/animals on the farm to pull up an enormous potato).  When we read it a second time, we pay very close attention to the details.  Once done, first graders help the teacher to record the events of the story on a flow map.  **Second graders may do this independently or with a buddy.  We also discuss the great vocabulary in the story, such as the word "enormous".

SIMPLE CLASS BOOK:  Each child will create one page for the book.  Each child will think of something enormous, such as a truck, cat, or whatever their imagination can come up with.  They will illustrate it on the top of the page and fill in the blanks on the bottom of the page (second graders can write on their own).  Please see example below:

_Jacob_'S ENORMOUS __tiger__.
After finishing the activities that go with The Enormous Potato, we read The Gigantic Turnip by Aleksei Tolstoy.  This is a very similiar book with some distinct differences and it is a great way to do a compare and contrast with the students using either a Venn Diagram or a Double Bubble Map.
Scarecrow Lessons:

Write the following poem to use in a pocketchart:

Scarecrow, scarecrow,
How scary can you be?
You scared (insert name)
But you didn't scare me!

We like to use our own names as well as those of our principal, parents, other teachers, etc.  This poem is great for shared reading and it cracks us up everytime!
