Past Dinners:

Saturday 23 November 2002 7pm at Chris and Jane's house

Size is important

Participants:

Malcolm Craig, Eugene Dorokhov, James Gu, Chris Harrod, Michael Harrod, Jane Liu, Craig Lynch-Blosse, Paul MacQuibban, Ivy Xie.

Agenda:

Meet, eat, drink and talk.
Set a date for the next dinner.
A Powerpoint presentation covering central ideas was displayed and is available here.
(We recommend you right click this link and select "Save Target As...")
(This file is 498KB).

Opportunities:

The following business ideas were suggested:

  • Accounting software for SME*, easily customised by accountants with good support
  • Anything enabled to run through a browser, Microsoft compatable, that is well marketed
  • WAP enabled software to customise car microprocessor engine settings on the fly
  • Multilanguage world wide software support
  • Online games
*SME = Small to Medium Enterprises (less than 30 employees, which make up 85% of New Zealand businesses)

Success and Failure Stories:

It was noted that many good ideas (Beta video, University inventions unable to be commercially applied) failed due to poor marketing.
Also mediocre ideas flourished due to good marketing (Microsoft Windows vs Macintosh).
It was suggested a good product is only 30% of the battle, marketing, sales, clients, is the other 70%.

What Has Been Achieved:

  • CV exchange
  • Contact details exchange
  • A number of members of the Network have been put forward for jobs
  • Found out how Sausage Software got started: Steve Outtrim, founder of Sausage, developed the web authoring tool "Hotdog".
