Sugar and organic acid utilisation in Pachysolen tannophilus and
Pichia stipitis (1991).
Thesis of research from 1988 to 1991. This was a study of two wine spoilage yeasts,
their mutants and the yeast strains ability to use organic acids and sugars.
This work was important for the development of yeast strains useful in reducing
levels of L-malic acid in grape juice, thereby improving the quality of wines.

Derepressed utilization of L-malic acid and succinic acid by mutants of
Pachysolen tannophilus (1997).
Mutants of Pachysolen tannophilus had been previously isolated for their
reduced ability to grow on sugars, and these yeasts were characterised for their
organic acid utilisation.

Waikato University student newspaper 'Nexus' opinion column 'Prometheus' (1993).
In the spirit of free speech, and in the hope of stirring up the student body from
its habit of apathy, Nexus ran a series of highly over-opinionated columns, called
(Tongue in cheek) 'In My Humble Opinion'. The column only drew a single piece of
hate mail. When voluntary unionism was introduced at Waikato a year of so later,
the union basically collapsed - students who had to take an active choice to join
the union didn't. Apathy rules.
