| MY MUSICAL LIFE |
| My life is full of music. That's why I call this page "My Musical Life", with just this topic I could tell so many interesting experiences and events that had happened in my life so far. As I'd said before my life's full of music, I play music, enjoys music, write music, teach music, sings, analyse music, discuss music, listens to music, talk about music, and everything about music. My musical life started as young as 3 years old where my mom sang me a a song in Mandarin. At that age, I found that song awfully long and I don't understand a word of it. All I like about it was just the melody. That song's actually from the melody of 'Are You Sleeping' which was sung in Mandarin as 'Liang Chi Lau Fu' (2 tigers). It's just a silly little song about 2 tigers which could run very fast, one without eyes and one without ears or a tail. From then on, my mom loves to sing for me. She bought lots of Childrens' Song for me to listen to everyday in my walkman. There're nursery rhymes, songs in English and Mandarin. Slowly I about the age of 4 I could remember all the lyrics and tunes in each and every of the cassette she bought for me. My favourite being 'Oh Susanna' and 'Muo Li Hua' at that age. When I started Kindergarden, I'd already know most the songs that the teacher taught to the class. Unfortunately, I was a very shy child, I didn't sing my heart out like I did at home. My dad loves to sing too. If he catches us singing, we'll all end singing and enjoying together. My first experience in performing came when I was about 5 years old, where got to sing and dance together with a few of my Kindergarden peers. It's a parent day concert. I could still remember a little of the dance steps and of course the song. It's a Mandarin song about friends, so short and simple. Was I nervous during the concert? I think so, because I could still remember I got quite nervous even during the rehearsal, where my teacher bought us to the class next door and show teacher and friends our singing and dancing. I couldn't help feeling shy and keep looking down on the floor! My formal musical training started at the age of 6 where my mom registered my brother and me for music lessons. She wants my brother to learn the electone and me the piano. By then I came to know that I have to attend music class once a week and I have to do my theory homework and do my practise. This really taught me dicipline. Sometimes I feel such a bore to practise my piano because the pieces are really boring and uninteresting at the beginning. Yet my brother teased me by saying my pieces are boring, unlike his electone pieces where he has background music to back him up. Mine's just plain boring single note short tunes. Luckily my parents encouraged me so much. Sometimes they tried some well known pop tunes by ear influencing me to do the same as well. My first song that I discovered by myself is 'Jingle Bells' up till now, I still have the notes in my head. From then on as I progressed and grow older, I started to appreciate music and practised the piano without my mom being the reminder to do my daily chore. Music really taught me dicipline. I started to face music exams, mini concerts and competitions. It's just like one exciting of the events that I looked forward to during my childhood and teenage years. |
