About LISA

Defending Animals in Need

LISA, League in Support of Animals, is a non-profit animal protection agency based in New Orleans. The group's mission is to prevent and eliminate animal cruelty in the Gulf States region. Formed in 1988, LISA receives more than 10,000 requests for assistance each year.
The group has achieved dramatic successes and is known for its results-oriented approach to animal protection. With 4,000+ members, LISA relies primarily on the generosity of individual donors to operate its animal protection programs. The group does not receive funding from government agencies to carry out its progressive community services.

Building Nonviolent Communities

How Does the League differ from local humane societies and SPCAs?

LISA is an independent agency which serves the entire region. Instead of focusing on providing animal control services, LISA actively works to investigate animal abuse and to prevent cruelty to animals. The League networks with independent SPCAs, humane societies, human service organizations, law enforcement agencies and private citizens to raise humane awareness and to eliminate animal abuse.

Cruelty Investigation

LISA investigates cruelty cases and files charges that lead to the arrest and conviction of animal abusers. The League works closely with police officers, humane agencies, district attorneys and volunteer lawyers, to ensure that state and local anti-cruelty laws are strongly enforced.

Abuse Prevention

The group conducts investigative training seminars for police officers, humane agents and private citizens, to help them prevent acts of cruelty on the streets. The League also creates and participates on progressive task forces and advisory boards that target ongoing problems like dog fighting, inhumane animal pounds and pet overpopulation.

There's No Excuse For Animal Abuse

Animal Care

LISA receives custody of abused and neglected animals seized in cruelty cases. The group operates a foster care program to house these animals until adoption. The group has rescued more than 2500 animals since its inception. LISA also provides free and low-cost spay and neuter services on a limited basis.

Community Projects

LISA travels around the Gulf Coast region to form humane agencies in areas of desperate need. LISA also supports existing shelters, SPCAs and humane groups, by sending caravans of workers to assist with hands-on work at small rural shelters. LISA works with city, parish and county administrators to improve and/or institute animal care programs.

Special Events

LISA uses community outreach to increase humane awareness. The group holds annual events, such as the Night Out Against Cruelty, Be Kind to Animals Week and the Halloween Walk Against Cruelty, to bring attention to the group's mission. The League also addresses specific forms of animal abuse through various public outreach programs.

Education

The League manages a volunteer Speakers Bureau. It's members are available to speak to groups on a wide variety of humane issues. LISA fills thousands of information requests each year and offers free curriculum guides to elementary school teachers. Its representatives have made presentations to more than 10,000 students.

Advocacy

LISA provides a voice for the animals at the Louisiana state capitol, at council meetings and through the regional media. The group is effective in its ability to pass tougher animal protection laws and to push for the enactment of progressive animal protection programs.
