Rev. Joseph Dunbar is thought to have come from Akron, Ohio in 1853. He settled in Sections 3 and 4 of Missouri Township* among the neighbors, the Byrns, Beans, and Bloomsfields, who also came from Ohio. Rev. Dunbar was a Methodist Circuit Rider in Illinois. He was influential in the organization of a Methodist Church of 27 members in 1856. They held meetings in No. 1 school house until Chapel Hill Church was built in 1882. The Dunbar family were blessed with strong voices which added much to the pleasure of the church services. *Mt. Sterling, Brown County, IL Joseph may not have come to Illinois until 1855, according to his son William Francis Dunbar who registered to vote in October of 1892 and said that he had lived in the state of Illinois for 35 years. Joseph was given the title of Rev. and was concidered a Circut Rider. He was, however, not a minister in file with the Methodist Church. If he was ordained it is unknown.
