We identified the mechanism that causes the display to fade. The Z-axis or anisotropic conductive film (ACF) that carries the electrical signals to the LCD fails at the PCB interface. The electrical signal does not reach the LCD. The picture on the right depicts an ACF assembly.
       

ACF interconnect technology is widely used on mobile phones. If your mobile screen ever lost characters or went blank then there was a good chance the ACF failed. The second picture on the right depicts the ACF manufacturing process.
