The History of Tae Kwon-Do
Although recently introduced to the western world, Tae Kwon-Do has for centuries been an integral part of Korean society. Not only is it an important part of Korean culture & heritage, it also, in every sense of the word, is a martial art, which is practised throughout Korea on the military training fields and the gymnasiums of all the high schools and universitys.Tae Kwon-Do means literally (tae) to jump kick and smash with the foot. (kwon) to punch and distroy with the fist. (Do) means the art or way of life, and is the name of the modern Korean art of self defence. It is more than just that however. It is the scientific use of the body for self-defence, a body that has gained the ultimate use of its faculties through intensive physical & mental training. It is a martial art that has no equal in power or technique. Though it is a martial art, its discipline, techniques & mental training are the mortar for building a strong sense of justice, fortitude, humility & resolve. It is this mental conditioning that seperates the true practitioner from the sensationalist content with mastering only the fighting aspects of the art.
Tae Kwon-Do heritage dates back to the 6th century AD. The young aristocrat warrior corps, the Hwa Rang-Do, In addition to the ordinary training in spear, bow and sword also thrained in various forms of hand & foot fighting. One of these ancient martial arts was named "Teak-Kyon" which chiefly employed foot techniques. This progressive, scientific, & constantly revised martial art has its roots mainly in Tae Kyon and karate as well as other arts formally recognised in Korea in 1955. General Choi Hong Hi 9th Degree was the prime mover in the devolpment of Tae Kwon-Do (T.K.D.) & was appointed head of the International Tae Kwon-Do Federation (I.T.F) which was formed in1966. Tae Kwon-Do first came to the UK with the organisation called the United Kindom Tae Kwon-Do association (U.K.T.A.) The organisation split and in July 1983 the Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain was formed (T.A.G.B.) The T.A.G.B is the largest Tae Kwon-Do association in the UK & one of the largest in the world, and is a member of the British Tae Kwon-Do council (B.T.C.) the T.A.G.B. is run by a committee of elected area representatives guided by an elected president. Gradings are carried out by 5th degree Black belt students & above who have been selected to join a grading board. Fully qualifed Black belts instructors run every registered T.A.G.B. club. There are three major styles of Tae Kwon-Do in the world today, which are the International Tae Kwon-Do Federation, the world Tae Kwon-Do federation & Tae Kwon-Do international. The principle differences between these styles are the patterns and the sparring. The sparring in (ITF) is non-to semi contact with pads on the hands, feet, & head. In addition, the (WTF) is semi to full contact with bare hands and feet wearing body armour. (TI) follow the ITF format which are the T.A.G.B. are representatives of.
