This is a classic movie, one of those you own just because. It took me a few times to understand it, and I'm not sure I do yet, but it's still great to watch and pick up on subtleties that had been previously missed or overlooked. This is also one of the few movies I can stand Juliette Lewis in (she is one of my least favorite actresses). All that I can't put to words has been expressed in an essay written by a college student...just click on the link here...
6. NATURAL BORN KILLERS
7. PULP FICTION
This is another one I own just because it is that cool. This DVD should be in all connoisseurs' libraries. Pulp Fiction was a groundbreaking movie that brought independent films into the light, and brought Tarantino into the light as well. And come on, what a cast! You've got Uma Thurman, John Travolta, Bruce Willis, and Samuel L. Jackson (the last 2 reunited in Unbreakable, an awesome superhero tale, and the first of a trilogy). Pulp Fiction will be forever cool, one of the classics our kids will love every bit as we did.
8. FIGHT CLUB
How supercool was this movie? Fight Club was one of the few movies I actually saw more than once at the theater. It is an excellent example of superb editing, and is one of the reasons I consider Brad Pitt and Edward Norton to be great actors (though Norton is one of my all time favorites anyway, has been since Primal Fear). I identified most with Jack's thoughts after his apartment blew up...his embarrassment over the contents of his fridge being made public, a refrigerator full of condiments. That is exactly how mine is, I almost fell out of the seat the first time I heard it. Well that was my side trip of nostalgia, if you haven't seen Fight Club, what is wrong with you? I order you to rent it, tonight. If not, you're fired. Click the link to check out the Fight Club site...
9. SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION
This is one of the all time best prison movie ever, period. If not the best. What a powerful movie, it hit me when I first saw it, and still does now, even after the hundredth time. Again, another stellar cast, Tim Robbins is so great, and you can't lose with Morgan Freeman. The old man with the bird is the best, I love that movie shows the passing of time through that bird's progression from barely post-egg to off and flying. You can't have a top 10 list without this movie.
10. AMERICAN HISTORY X
Wow, like I said before, show this in school. I grew up in the south where racism is still very prevalent, on both sides, and there are some people out there that NEED to see this movie. My jaw dropped at the end and I swear it took days to pick it back up. There are a lot of movies out there that deal with racism, and it is easy to get tired of black and white constantly being an issue in films, but don't let that be an excuse to miss out on this movie. Please.
And the runners-up are:
These movies deserve to be mentioned. There isn't room on the top 10 for everyone (well unless you can't count) but I still want to list the other films that I either own, love, or both:
Benny and Joon, Best In Show, Blade, Blazing Saddles, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Dark City, Dogma, Fifth Element, Flawless, Go, Goodwill Hunting, Hackers, the Indiana Jones trilogy, Kalifornia, K-PAX, Labyrinth, The Last Unicorn, The Matrix, The Messenger, most Monty Python (including the Meaning of Life and The Holy Grail), Office Space, Orgazmo, Pi, Playing By Heart, The Point, The Princess Bride, The Red Violin, Reservoir Dogs, Seven, Snatch, Spy Game, Strange Days, Suicide Kings, Terminator 2 (proof that it is possible for the sequel to be just as good, if not better, than the first), Titus,Vanilla Sky, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Young Frankenstein
Please, feel free to email me if I left any out, I would so appreciate any input.
