| I began this site about a year ago and it took me almost that long to make the music section. In the movie Playing By Heart one character says to another, "Talking about love is like dancing about architecture." The same can be said for music and that is why this portion has been so difficult. To truly express everything I feel about it would take up most of this site, and too much of your time, so the following is my attempt to give a synopsis of music in my life. I hope to mention some of my favorite bands and personalities, as well as keep an ongoing update of what is in my CD booklet this week. Feel free to email me if you feel I have left anything or anyone out in my attempt to share these things with you. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Introduction: A Brief History Of Music By Lina Porcelle |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Once upon a time there was a little girl named Shannon. She loved music and it followed her everywhere she went; in the car, in her bedroom, and even in the bathroom. As a child she was first introduced to Cat Stevens, John Denver, Tracy Chapman, Dan Fogelberg, and the great Jimmy Buffet. She learned to dance and talk fast with the likes of Miami Sound Machine and Paula Abdul. Then with the popularity of In Living Color and Top 40 Radio she found hip hop: Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and Onyx. This also included many other one-hit-wonders we all make fun of now, like Snow. This morphed into techno/R&B/Pop/Pre-NSYNC stuff that you hear on contemporary radio stations and cheesy hits compilations (Bel Biv Devoe, Color Me Badd, etc.) Note that even though she grew up in the eighties, she never succumbed to new wave shite like Men Without Hats, Devo, and the slew of others that play during the eighties lunch hour on your local radio stations. Enter the second half of Shannon's life when she gets better taste in music, while still keeping her love for Buffet, Chapman, and Snoop. Here we find a brief grunge phase, one that just about everyone has had. Here we find the Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, and Soundgarden (but thank goodness no Pearl Jam). All of a sudden, an impulse buy introduced Shannon to Tori Amos, thus bringing in a mellower (much more female dominant) taste in music. This included Joan Osborne, Poe, and The Church. Then the radio begins to play a song called "Rock N Roll Lifestyle", Shannon discovers Cake, and the Lord said, "Let there be light." Fastforward to now... Now we see a woman who has worked in music retail for a few years and has gained a much more eclectic interest in music. As you flip through the array of CD booklets you see relatively unknown bands and singers like Shooter, Pocketsize, Jake Andrews, Bicycle, Cravin Melon, The Univited, Collapsis, BFD, Uma, Artificial Joy Club, and many others whose names can't even be remembered to type them here. You want to ask her, "Hey, do you even listen to these?" and she says, "Of course, I love any music I can sing to. Most of those, like Shooter and Pocketsize, are chick bands who never took off but should have." Flipping through the books you also see multiple CD's from the same artist, like all of the Seven Mary Three discs, all of the Tori Amos discs, of course all of the Cake discs (even a "Cake's Greatest Hits" 18-track disc she made herself) and nearly all of the Fatboy Slim discs. So there you have it, a brief history of music, as it pertains to the development of a collector of sound. Do explore on to get a more in depth idea of what a collector of sound is and how music can so thoroughly impact her life. |
