Better Can't Make Your Life Better
Yay! New Lilys!
Of course, no two Lilys records have ever sounded the same...
This one sounds like every pop band from the mid-sixties - the Beatles,
the Monkees, the Doors, etc.. There are bits and pieces that
are taken directly from popular songs - a bit of Day Tripper,
a riff from Soul Kitchen, something that sounds like Magic
Bus, etc.. Does all this Xeroxing of styles and riffs make it
a bad album? Of course not! I think it's great. It's much more
like A Brief History... than Eccsame. It rocks. There are huge
guitar sounds, very little of the wavy-swirly stuff, and tons and
tons of catchy, sticky, infectious hooks. It's as if they said
"Let's write a bunch of songs that sounded like they were
written in '65!" But, it manages to sound totally fresh and
real, never corny or nostalgic, not like that "That Thing
You Do" song, which was written to sound like something from
'65 to make people long for some Golden Age of Rock. This Lilys
album sounds like fun, pop, goodness.
The Lilys always manage to sound, to me, like if they wanted to, they could write the best songs ever, but they just don't. They write really catchy stuff, no doubt. But it always feels to me like they're holding back. I like that.
