Deity comes to us the moment we open ourselves to it - whether by asking out loud, or simply wishing upon a star. If the request is there, Deity follows.
S/he is all around, above, below, and within us from before the moment we are born, waiting for us to make that request. Some of us do it sooner than others. Some of us have lessons we need to learn and things we must experience before we are ready for Deity.
How did Deity come to me, personally? Through the birth of my son.
Sean was born extremely premature, weighing a mere 1 pound, 6 ounces. He fought and struggled for every second of his life. Two days after his birth, I had to go home, leaving my tiny helpless baby boy behind . . . the boy my husband and I had prayed for and tried so hard to keep inside me until his growing was done. I could not hold him, could not touch him.
I had never been a praying person, but before leaving the hospital that sad day, I sat by his bedside and prayed - "Mother, I beg of you, please send someone to protect him and keep him safe." Only after I left, did I realize I'd "mistakenly" said mother, rather than father. And then I wondered, what if there WAS a mother? (I'd always questioned each of us being created in "his" image, anyway - didn't make much sense to me.) So I waited, and I asked for a sign. And I left it in the hands of whoever the Divine was.
I returned to my son's side when I had the strength to make the trip back, a few days later. I walked in, scrubbed, and went to the nurse, being informed that he was very heavily sedated, and I'd see no movement from him, but that this was normal. I went to my son's side, only to find the oddest thing.
My grandmother had, from the time I could remember, always slept in an odd manner - on her side, with her hand completely covering her nose and mouth. (This was due to having been pegged in the face with a ball while sleeping by her brother in childhood.) I had NEVER seen anyone else sleep that way before or since.
This was they way I found my fully sedated son. Lying on his side, with his hand covering his nose and mouth, the way my Grandma always had. I began to cry. I went to each of the nurses on duty that day, asking "Did you put him like this?" None had, and each replied that he'd been lying on his back, arms out when they'd checked him only moments before.
Here was my sign. My sign that my grandmother was there. My sign that my son would survive. And my sign that the Great Mother was there for me, waiting for me to ask her into my life and my heart.
I had no idea where to go from there. That part took me a few more years. My dearest friend, Welsh MoonSpirit, helped me begin. But now I have found it. I have found Deity in the trees . . . in the grass . . . in the rivers, lakes, and streams. I have found Deity in the wind that blows . . . the sun that shines . . . the moon that glows so bright. Deity is the air that we breathe, the water we drink, the food that we eat. It is in the people that we love, and those we do not. It is in every stone, every rock, every leaf, bird, fish, raindrop and cloud.
S/he is all around, above, below, and within us from before the moment we are born, waiting for us to make that request.
My Blessings and Love to all who are on your search . . . .
