What is Familial Mediterranean Fever ?

Familial Mediterranean Fever is said to be a rare inherited inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent attacks of fever and acute peritonitis (inflammation of the membranes that line the abdominal cavity) or (of the lungs) called pleuritis. There can also be arthritis, skin lesions(erysipeloid rash, mostly below the knees) and pericarditis(swelling of the heart). The are some cases that experience a serious complication known as amyloidosis(an abnormal accumulation of a fatty like substance in various parts of the body called amloid). If amloid accumulates in the kidneys(renal amyloidosis) kidney function may be impaired and life threatening complications may occur.
