Third
Annual Women's Filmmaker Brunch. 11-3. Held in conjunction with
Reel Affirmations, D.C.'s International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.
The brunch features the film Julie Johnson, starring Courtney Love
and Lili Taylor. Lesbian filmmakers from around the world talk about
their art and ask for financial help in finishing their films. Created
in 1999 by Festival Director Sarah Kellogg, the brunch is expected
to draw more than 300 women this year. "We wanted an event that
would reach out to the women in the community while providing something
special for our female VIP pass holders," Kellogg said. "When
I began volunteering for the festival in 1998, there was a real absence
of programming and special events for women. A lot has changed since
then, and we're proud of the success the brunch has seen."
Immediately
following the brunch at 1 pm, women will take over the Lincoln Theatre
(1215 U Street) for the Washington premiere of Julie Johnson, which
was recently named "Best Lesbian Feature of the Year" at
the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, is the
story of a 30-something Hoboken housewife, Julie Johnson (Taylor),
who secretly aspires to be a physicist. Julie's life begins to change
when she takes a night class in computer science. Julie gains the
courage she needs to kick out her husband and to begin living life
on her own terms, which includes giving in to her attraction to long-time
best friend and fellow suburban prisoner, Claire (Love).
Tickets
for the Women's Filmmaker Brunch are $25 (includes the film). Tickets
for the film are also available separately for $8. Tickets for all
films and the Women's Filmmaker Brunch: at the door, reelaffirmations.org,
or from the office of Reel Affirmations and One in Ten at 202.986.1119.

for Komen Race for the Cure
Race for the Cure. Karen is organizing a group of LIFErs to
walk and run in Baltimore to support breast cancer research. E-mail
Karen for details, or if you want to help organize. You might
also want to read the story behind Karen's
involvement with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Komen
Race for the Cure® Series has become the largest series of 5K
runs/fitness walks in the world, and is the largest footrace in Maryland.
Races will be held in more than 100 U.S cities and three foreign countries
in 2001 with over 1.3 million participants expected.
Proceeds
from the Komen Race for the Cure® Series help fund important breast
cancer research as well as breast health initiatives on a local level.
Seventy-five percent of the proceeds remain in the local community
where the Race is held, helping to support breast health education
and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for the medically
underserved. These programs are funded based upon a special needs
assessment survey performed by each Affiliate. A minimum of 25% of
Race proceeds helps fund breast cancer research and project grants
awarded through Komen Foundation Headquarters.
Day Trip to Thurmont Crafts Fair and Western Maryland. Take
time to smell the apples! We'll visit an orchard and maybe a cider
mill to boot. E-mail Laura.

Group's 1st Birthday Party!
Hey, LG! Were one year old! We supplied the food, and you supplied
the fun! We played carnival events (ring toss, dart throw, hoop throw,
and more). And you took home LOTS of FABULOUS prizes! You bid on eight
adorable babes in a heated lesbian silent date auction.
We raised
money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and for several charities
raising money to help victims and families of the September 11 terror
attacks.
Thank you
