Bread and wine were offerings to the Goddess Ceres long before the Christian Era. She was the Goddess of agriculture (Ceres = Cereal, as in grain----bread). The mixture of water and wine I believe was Greek in origin and was performed
long before the Christian era, too. Actually it may have been part of the rites of Mithra before that and only adopted by the Greeks. Will check for sources if need to do so.
