Actually, it has more in common with elements of Mithras worship. Worshippers of Mithras (who, according to legend, died and was resurrected to immortality) would partake of his "flesh" and "blood" (bread and wine, the emblems we commonly see today), and thus gain his immortality. Coincidentally, the center of Mithras worship was in Paul's hometown of Tarsus.
At least, that's what I know from heart... I'm sure there are numerous parallels.
By the way, has anyone ever told you that you're extremely grating? :o)
