Help Stop Canada's Seal Hunt

Can you spot the difference that allows Canada to kill one of these seemingly identical seal pups?

Look closely! Because it only takes the loss of a single white hair on that beautiful coat to reclassify a seal from a protected "whitecoat" to a "ragged jacket" which can be legally killed. And that happens when they're as young as 12 days old! Wait until they're just 7 days older, and then it's REALLY hunting season!

What is pet abuse?
Pet abuse is the intentional harm of a companion animal. Often an abuser, or perpetrator, harms a pet in order to emotionally manipulate the pet's "owner." CAT For example, a woman may not leave an abusive relationship because her boyfriend has threatened to kill the family dog, or a child may refuse to report sexual abuse because her abuser has threatened to beat the family cat if she does.

Pet abuse may also include abusive behavior by a child who, because he or she suffered abuse at the hands of a parent, does not know how to interact with pets appropriately. Pet abuse, however, is not exclusive to dysfunctional families. The abuser, or perpetrator, may be a stranger or even the next door neighbor. Pet abuse can take many forms and can cause unremitting psychological damage. · When does the unborn baby's heart begin to beat?

The heartbeat begins between the eighteenth and twenty-fifth day.

· When does the brain begin to function?

Electrical brain waves have been recorded as early as forty days.

· How early can a baby survive outside the mother's womb?

Currently, twenty weeks is considered the accepted minimum. However, this time will be reduced as medical technology continues to improve.

· What about cases of rape and incest?

Pregnancy from rape is extremely rare. A study of one thousand rape victims who were treated after the rape reported no pregnancies. There are no known studies of incest cases. Medically, we know pregnancy in these cases would be rare. As reasons for legalizing abortion rape and incest are nothing more than emotional screens used by those profiting from abortion. But we must approach the victim of rape or incest with great compassion. The woman has been subjected to an ugly trauma, and she needs love, support and help. But she has been the victim of one violent act. Should we now ask her to be a party to a second violent act -that of abortion? Unquestionably, many would return the violence of killing an innocent baby for the violence of rape. But, before making this decision, remember that most of the trauma has already occurred. She has been raped. That trauma will live with her all her life. Furthermore, this girl did not report for help, but kept this to herself. For several weeks or months, she has thought of little else. Now, she has finally asked for help, has shared her upset, and should be in a supportive situation. more information

· But what about the child with disease who will die a slow death or live his life as a burden to his family?

Do you believe the new "ethic" should be that we kill the suffering or burdensome? Some of these cases are tragic, some are also inspirational. We cannot assume the responsibility for killing an unborn child simply because the child has not yet been seen in public. The child's place of residence does not change what abortion does - kill a human being.

· What about the population boom? We can hardly feed the people of the world now!

True, the population of the world is growing, but population is not much of a problem in the United States. With a birth every 8 seconds and a death every 11 seconds, the U.S. population is growing at less than one percent per year. (www.census.gov)

Population growth or decline compares replacement of the current number of reproductive age individuals with the number of babies being born. By this measure, the United States is now in a sharp population decline.

· How can a girl give up her own baby for adoption and go through life never knowing what is happening to her child?

Which is better to remember, "I gave my baby life. And because I loved him, I gave him into the arms of a loving couple" - or to remember, "I selfishly ended my baby's life?"

Approximately 40% of all antibiotics sold in the US are given to farm animals to promote growth.

In the United Kingdom, over 180,000 cattle have contracted bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly known as mad cow disease. To contain the spread of the disease 4.5 million heads of cattle were killed. Over 100 people have died from the human variant of the disease known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.

Vegetarianism is far from a fad. It goes back thousands of years, if not longer. The term "vegetarian" was first used in 1847 in England.

The US has the highest permitted amount of pus cell concentration in milk allowable by international standards. "By US federal law, Grade A milk is allowed to have over a drop of pus per glass of milk." ("Paratuberculosis and Crohn's Disease: Got Milk?" Michael Greger, MD)

According to Scorecard.org, "The most significant threat to water resources across the U.S. now comes from" comes from agriculture. The estimated one billion tons of feces and urine produced each year by livestock, and the way in which it is treated, pose one of America's serious pollution threats." The EPA reports that animal wastes "pollute American waterways more than all other industrial source combined." (E Magazine, Jan/Feb 2002)

According to VegFam, 10 acres of land can support 60 people growing soybeans or just 2 people if cattle are raised.
