Seeing that this was the very first painting competition I entered, I went all out and did many things I have not done before.
A simple weapon swap with pinning was first on the list. I took the axe from the old White Dwarf model, filed it down and
pinned it to the power sword hand from the Space Wolves accessories sprue. I then pinned the whole arm to the torso as
I wanted the arm held at an angle further away from the body, and also because I was concerned that the arm might break
too easily. I hunted about for a proper shield to use but to no avail. While rummaging through some old stuff, I chanced upon
the old rhino sprue I had left and as I looked at it, the idea stuck me to use the flat hatch as a shield. Some dry fitting
showed that the size was just right. Perfect.
After doing up a nifty conversion which I was pleased with, I wanted to do my model justice and paint it to the best of my abilities. Unfortunately, given my hectic schedule, there wasn't enough time to paint and I found myself rushing the model even on the last day of the entry. Thankfully I finished it in time. I tried layering on the shield and the left leg but couldn't quite get it. Thanks to a little mistake during the touch up process, I had to redo the highlighting on the shield and that messed it up further. The freehand on the shield went quite well while that on the shoulder pads didn't, expecially the right shoulder pad. All in all, while it didn't go according as planned, it still went pretty well in my opinion and I'm quite proud of how the model turned out.
Wolf Guard 'champion' And here is it, a group shot of my fully painted and highlighted 3-men strong Long Fang pack. Ah, what a sense of satisfaction.
Long Fang pack With some overtime, I've finished up the Long Fang Pack Leader just one day after I completed my second Lnog Fang. Now I have my first fully painted and highlighted pack for use in battles! Huzzah! What a good feeling. Unfortunately, due to the rushed job, my highlights aren't all that smooth. The face was a complete nightmare to paint, especially the eyes... I guess it probably looks reasonably good from a foot away... It was fun to paint power armour other than the normal MKVII. I guess my only quib with the model is the skull on the belt. I didn't realise it while painting but my final layer of white was too thick resulting in some unsightly, uneven streaks of paint. Sigh, and the mistake has to be at such an obvious point of focus. Oh well...
Long Fang Pack Leader And within a few days, another completed Long Fang! Wonderful. At this rate, my 1500 point army may finally be completed at long last! Well... I still have 30+ models to highlight... so that may take a while...
another Long Fang Hot on the heels of the Blood Claw comes this newly painted Long Fang. Learning from my experience with the Blood Claw, I've tried highlighting some other areas of the armour as well. Thanks to the guys at the Bolter&Chainsword forum for their constructive criticism and encouragement.
Long Fang With the release of 4th edition and after visiting Cool Mini or Not and being inspired by Vincent Hudon (check out his model!), I'm burning to push my painting limits too. Thus far, all I've done have been concentrating on being neat and getting a smooth paint flow. I've been highlighting the details but not the armour. Recently, I tried highlighting one pack of Grey Hunters with a single layer of Space Wolf Grey. It didn't look that bad... This time round, I decided to really push myself and that resulted in the first of what I truly consider a fully highlighted model. I chose one of the first few models I painted so that even if I messed up, I won't be that upset. I gave it a total of four layers of highlights, 3:1 Shadow Grey and Space Wolf Grey, 1:1 Shadow Grey and Space Wolf Grey, 1:3 Shadow Grey and Space Wolf Grey, and a final highlight of pure Space Wolf Grey. I'm quite pleased with the results and will definately be painting the rest of my models this way. It's pretty time consuming given that I'm not the fastest of painters. The four layers of highlighting took my about an hour and a half but I'm well pleased with the end results.
first fully highlighted Blood Claw This is a display of all my painted models. The standard is low, being my first army and all, but I believe I have been improving, and hopefully this will show in some of my later models. ![]() A picture of my Grey Hunters Pack. The pack marking can be seen from the Grey Hunter on the right. I followed the colour scheme for red and black for Grey Hunters. The left shoulder pad is still bare as I'm undecided on what to do for the Company marking. These are my first few highlighted models with only one layer of highlight. ![]() My only Land Speeder thus far. I'm currently in the process of painting a second Land Speeder, the 2nd ed. metal one. I've no pack markings painted yet, maybe later when I've finished painting my 1,500 points army. ![]() My first Rhino painted up for my Blood Claws pack. I'm still sourcing about for stuff to add to it to represent extra armour. I've seen a few cool ideas about, but again, that will wait while I paint up the rest of my army. ![]() My one and only Whirlwind in my army. I had thought of adding a second Whirlwind, but that idea has been scrapped in favour of adding a Predator which I am currently painting up. The Whirlwind really needs more details, but that too will have to wait. ![]() As an aside, here's a non-Space Wolf model I painted, one of a handful. The quality of the picture isn't too good, but this is actually my best painted model to date. |
