The Lipan Apache were the only tribe of Apache to have their headquarters inside Texas for any considerable length of time. Their ancestors had lived in what is now Canada, and the group known as the Lipan Apaches arrived in the Texas Llano Estacado and the Edwards Plateau by 1680. By 1725, the Lipans had ranged throughout much of Texas. One of their villages was located approximately 250 miles northwest of present-day Austin, Texas. Another of their villages was positioned about 50 miles northwest of today?s San Antonio, Texas, at Tancahe Camp on the Rio Colorado de Texas. The word "Lipan" means "Warriors of the Mountains" but the Lipan Apaches called themselves "n'de tindi" as they were called in the ancient times.
