Young and upcoming Nevisian athletes received early Christmas cheer from Premier Vance Amory yesterday, when he presented them with 14 pairs of brand-name track shoes. The pairs of shoes, adidas and Nike brands, were presented to the Vice President of the Nevis Amateur Athletic Association Wakely Daniel at the Premier's office, Administration Building, Charlestown in the presence of Shavane Joseph, a teacher at the Charlestown Secondary who had initially requested the Premier to procure a quantity of track shoes. Amory said Joseph had approached him during one of the sports meets in Nevis where she made the request, and which he took seriously. When he visited New York two weeks ago to address the New York Cricket League at the celebration and awards dinners, he mentioned the matter to a Kittitian who lives in the USA, Jefroy Morrishaw. "I was very surprised to get a call on Friday from Mr Morrishaw," noted Premier Amory. He pointed out that Morrishaw had gratefully acceded to the request and went ahead and purchased the name brand shoes, some of which were similar to the type that Marion Jones of the USA uses, on behalf of the Nevis Amateur Athletic Association.

The Premier said that he was extremely thankful for the generous gift and said: "I am very happy to hand over these track shoes to you for the use of our students and I am very happy that I have been able to access it through my contacts." On receiving the shoes, Daniel, who had been called from a practice session at Grove Park to receive the gift, thanked the Premier on behalf of the association and the athletes who he noted would be happy to make use of them. He also thanked Joseph, who although not an official of the association went out of her way to have the shoes procured.  (Extract from St. Kitts/Nevis Sun)
