HAMPTON GAMES - TRINIDAD Trinidad & Tobago held the 30th annual Hampton Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium this past weekend. Antigua & Barbuda's Heather Samuel and Daniel Bailey were winners at the meet, but fellow countrywoman Janil Williams fell to defeat. In the women's 1500 metres, T&T's Pilar McShine, who won 3,000-metre gold at last month's CARIFTA Games in Bermuda, toppled her arch-rival Williams for the second time this year in a keenly contested race. McShine won in 4:44.52 seconds, with Williams (4:47.34) second. Samuel, a former Central American and Caribbean (CAC) champion and Pan Am Games bronze medallist, gave a commanding performance in winning the women's 100 metres in 11.45 seconds. Second was Trinidad & Tobago's CARIFTA Games 200-metre silver medallist Wanda Hutson in 11.53 seconds, preventing a one-two finish for Antigua and Barbuda. Samuel's compatriot Sonia Williams (11.61) was third. In the men's equivalent, Antiguan CARIFTA Under-20 boys' 100-metre champion Bailey won in a time of 10.32 seconds to finish well ahead of Rueben Isaac and Melvin Nero, both sprinters being clocked at 10.44 seconds. |
