Origin Date: 1992 Details: In third grade when I first saw a computer, I was amazed. Later on that year, there was a scare of something called a virus that could mess up a computer. From that fact, I figured out that a virus was a program that could cause unexpected behavior to occur. So I begun to think of ways that a virus could enter a machine. A floppy disk was the most likely way this could be done at this time. Then I thought about devices connected to the computer, including the power cord. At first I thought it was possible to send a virus that way by sending a signal through the power supply. However, I ruled it out thinking, "No, that is used just to give the computer its power and nothing more." Little did I know that I was stumbling on the idea of INTERNET FROM A POWER OUTLET! Current Progress: Locally, Duke Power is experimenting with this, but it does have some problems. Ultimately, I believe this idea will be scrapped since this is becoming a wireless world. |

Origin Date: 1992 /1993 Details: I took a part two calculators and wondered if it was possible to network them. I realized that a wire was needed to send data from one calculator to another. However, this idea was practically useless since one calculator did all the operations while the other would only be able to show data from the connected calculator. I began to think about how useful this would be and how could it be applied to other devices. I realized this could be related to computers and possibly other devices. Then I wondered if there was a way of sending data without a wire. From that, I was thinking about wireless networks. Current Progress: Today, wireless has grown to bounds that I have never imaged at this time. More research is being done to make just about everything wireless. |

Origin Date: 1995 - 1998 Details: These were by far the best days of my academic life. My grades were high A's, I learned a great deal about Science, and I had fun. One of my after school activities was participating in the environmental club. We did many neat things such as participating in the 1996 "Build a New World" project in Washington D.C. and explored local streams and rivers to see how they effect the environment. Our teacher was a very smart and outgoing person. She went out of her way to support the club while dealing with her classes and life at home. One of the major topics of the club was recycling and trying to encourage people to recycle. I was hoping that by the year 2000, almost everything would be recyclable, but I was wrong. This was also my first exposure to the idea of Global Warming, which made sense to me and did not seem like a "theory" but a "FACT". Current Progress: I am disappointed to see that recycling has still not taken a hold like I expected it would. This taught me that things do not change over night in this world. The message of recycling is getting out and the industry is seeing the need to clean up and has made many improvements. This can be seen today by the increasing number of products made with recycled components. I believe there should be more laws to help encourage residential recycling and how each trash collector must have recycling services. We absolutely cannot go on living the way we are today. The problem is recycling costs money and some of the products from recycled material are not that strong while others are stronger! Side Note: Stryophone should be removed with from the market since it practically never decomposes. There is already a very good and environmentally friendly subsitute to replace it called PLA. The problem is that few people know about this type of packaging and it costs a few cents more. However, the more demand for recycled products should bring down the price. Learn more about PLA at: |
