DP Furniture Express North Eastern Harrier
League.
Farringdon School, Sunderland. Sat. 30th Oct.
Defending champions, Sunderland Harriers, easily won the Senior Mens'
team event, at the opening DP Furniture Express North Eastern Harrier League
fixture, at Farringdon School. The host club, Division 1 champions, in
12 of the last 13 years, comfortably defeated Morpeth and Durham City,
who were led home by the individual winner, Andrew Moreton. In the mirky
conditions, the University student, led throughout on the 3 lap course,
holding off the brief challenge of new veteran, Brian Bewick of Sunderland.
As Bewick faded to third, another veteran, Les Atkinson of Morpeth moved
into second place, but was still 45secs behind the winner. Bewick led home
the Sunderland challenge, closely followed by 5th placed Steve Potts, who
came through from the medium pack. Junior International, Ryan McLeod of
Elswick, running from the fast pack, clocked the quickest overall time,
finishing in 11th position.
Elswick and Newcastle University won the Division 2 and 3 categories,
respectively.
Robert Foster of Tynedale won the Under 17 event, with the fastest
time, going to 4th placed, Sean Hall of Gateshead. Glen Scrafton and Nathan
Reed made it a good day for the Sunderland club, winning the Under 15 and
Under 13 events. Sam Potter of North Shields and Tristan Venus of Tynedale,
clocked the respective fastest times.
North Shields Poly newcomer, Claire McManus comfortably won the Womens'
race, leading her club to a team victory over defending champions, Elvet
Striders, who were led home by 2nd placed, Fiona Shenton. Claremont youngster,
Kate Chapman finished 3rd.
Claire Simpson of Jarrow and Hebburn, clocked the fastest time, finishing
in 4th place, just ahead of defending individual champion, Donna James
of Elvet.
However, the times of the Senior Women, were eclipsed by the leading
competitors in the Junior race. Fastest overall was Morpeth's Danielle
Watts, who finished 4th from the fast pack. The event was won by Sam Duffy
ahead of Gateshead clubmate, Lynsey Dodsworth.
Rebecca Shield of Durham and Sarah Crosby of Sunderland, won the Under
15 and Under 13 races, and were also fastest overall.

Additional Comments: Most of report used but ignored final mention of
younger Girls' races.
Overcast but quite mild. Heavy underfoot on outer parts of course,
though ok round start/finish area. After experimental first season, Womens'
handicaps now brought into line with Men.
278 finishers in Senior Mens' race (last time: 70:34). Later heard
from Kevin Carr, that Brian Bewick is not a veteran. Celebrity runners
included: 267 Ray Laverick 46:09 and 268 Mal Stephenson 46:42. Excellent
turn-out in Senior Womens' (59) and Junior Womens' (21) events. In latter,
Sarah Evans finished 11th, Natalie Dawson 13th (25:57) and Chloe Gilmore
21st (29:47). Heaton turned out 8 Senior Men, though Colin McEntee dropped
out after lap 1. Placings were: 169 Scott McEntee 39:09; 205 Jeff Wilson

North Yorkshire and South Durham Cross Country
League.
Teesdale School, Barnard Castle. Sun. 24th Oct.
Martin Scaife, running in the colours of second-claim club, North Yorkshire
Moors, easily won the main event at yesterday's opening fixture of the
North Yorkshire and South Durham League, at Teesdale School, Barnard Castle.
In the extremely testing underfoot conditions, Scaife headed the field
on the three-lap course, pulling away to 1min 26secs victory over Scarborough's
Daniel Agustus, with Rob Cole of Middlesbrough finishing in third place.
The winner, still not able to count for his main club, Morpeth, gains his
first England vest, when running in Ghent, Belgium, in 2 weeks time.
Johanna Jackson of Middlesbrough and Cleveland, overtook long-time
leader, Bernadette Taylor, of Darlington, halfway round the second of the
two laps, to comfortably win the Senior Womens' race. New Darlington recruit
and former North Eastern champion, Marie Stansmore took second place, with
Junior Fell Running International, Sarah Tunstall outsprinting Taylor for
third.
Shildon's Kate Avery was a runaway winner of the Under 13 Girls' race,
and looks set to gain honours in the forthcoming season.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Weather was sunny and mild,
but the course was like a quagmire on the "unseen parts". Ok round start
and finish area. Got info from registration lists, but leading veterans
& Under 20's were only guessed at time, so apologies for any errors.
Received final individual list on 26th Oct, from John Ketley. Amendments
and extra times are: Senior Men: 19 Tony Livingston (1st vet) 34:07;
21 Malcolm Grainger (2nd vet); 24 Ian Cook 34:55 (3rd vet); 26 Nigel Orr

39:13 (2nd M50); 84 John Ketley 40:48 (1st M60); 107 Ian Barnes 42:50 (2nd
M60).
Junior Men: Obviously Lewis Moses was 1st ahead of Nick Zissler (33:52)
and then Paul Stockton.
Under 13 Boys: 2 A Wears (wrong info from Graham Hall) Johanna
Jackson is still an U20. Under 17 Women: 5 Lynsey Dodsworth (gst) 24:05
(13th in combined SW race). J Gray was 1st lady veteran in 15th (24:37)
ahead of Susan Milburn (17th). Number of finishers were: Senior Men: 127.
Under 17 Men: 19 (a good turn-out). Senior Women: 57.
I think Tunstall must be 2nd claim for Rowntrees. Looking after the
Northern Runner stand, was Chris White as a favour for Charles Stead. He
now teaches in Gateshead.

National Road Relay Championships.
Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. Sat. 23rd Oct.
Despite a brilliant run by Nick McCormick, Morpeth were unable to gain
medals at Saturday's National 6 Stage Road Relay Championship, at a wet
Sutton Park. In the increasingly worsening conditions, McCormick lifted
Morpeth, the 2000 winners, from 19th to 2nd on leg 4, with a time that
was only bettered by Aldershot's European Under 23 5000m champion, Chris
Thompson on leg 6. Belgrave took the title for the 4th year in succession,
and were never headed after the 3rd stage. Former Elswick Harrier, David
Anderson was again a member of their team, running the fifth leg on this
occasion. A weakened Morpeth team, after an indifferent start, only moved
into the top twenty after Ian Hudspith's third leg. They dropped to fifth
place on leg 5, finishing in that position. Sunderland led their North
East rivals in the early stages, with the first two runners, Mark Hood
and Patrick Martin finishing in 14th place. They came home in a respectable
25th position, despite being without the services of top veteran, Brian
Rushworth. The region's other representatives, Hartlepool Burn Road finished
in 55th postion, with Mark Armstrong their fastest performer on leg 1.
The Cleveland club, were also fielding a weakened team as club treasurer
Peter Johnson, was called upon to run their final leg. Teesside-based Steve
Hepples, running in the Newham and Essex Beagles colours, clocked a fast
time, lifting his club from 31st to 7th on leg 2.
Chester Le Street were unable to retain the Womens' 4 Stage title,
finishing in 11th position. Victory this time, went to Bristol and Westbury,
anchored by top junior, Kate Reed, who broke the course record by nearly
a minute. Dianne Henaghan finished 8th on leg 1, for the Durham club, with
Kathryn Waugh dropping to 10th on leg 2. Steph Robson (13th) and Alyson
Dixon closed in, but like all of the other region's teams, the strongest
line-up, which is definitely needed at this level of competition, was not
available. Morpeth finished in 30th position, with Aiveen Fox's opening
leg, the fastsst. Ironically two former Morpeth athletes, twins Carolyn
and Angela Dickie gained minor medals, when running the second legs, for
Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow and Wakefield, respectively.

Additional Comments: Most of report used, but slightly reworded (sometimes
changes meaning eg. suggested Kate Reed broke recoird by 1min). Weather
was dry but overcast before start, but then started raining. Although easing
off at times it never stopped. Very heavy and unpleasant when race finished.
Also little shelter. Although little wind round finish area, I gather it
was windy on parts of course. Could have started Mens' event a half an
hour earlier, as there was a long gap beween races. Leg positions were:
Morpeth 35, 25, 19, 2, 5 and 5; Sunderland 14, 14, 23, 23, 21 and 25; Hartlepool

37, 41, 35 and 30; Morpeth B 67 and 58. Olivia Walwyn moved from 32 to
22 on leg 3, for 17th placed City of Norwich. Surprisingly she departed
at York, not Durham on return train journey.

category.

Blaydon Harriers Metrocentre Nichol Hunter
Cross Country Relays.
Shibdon Pond, Blaydon. Sun. 17th Oct.
Gosforth Harriers won their second Cross Country Relay in a month,
winning the Senior event, at yesterday's Blaydon Harriers Metrocentre Nichol
Hunter Memorial meeting, at Shibdon Pond.
Lewis Timmins followed Dan Samuels of Morpeth on leg 1, before Jonathon
Graham took the lead for the Tyneside club on the 2nd leg. Matthew Nicholson
held off the challenges of brothers Ian and Mark Hudspith, who were running
for the Morpeth A and B teams, to cross the finish line with 2secs to spare.
Gosforth added to their recent victory at Sunderland. Ryan McLeod, who
brought Elswick from 11th to 6th on leg 2, clocked the official fastest
time, though guest runner, Martin Scaife, was a second faster on leg 1.
Sunderland dominated the Veterans' event, with their first two A team
runners, Tom Doughty and Brian Rushworth sharing the fastest time.
Despite the presence of many of the formidable Chester Le Street squad,
Jarrow and Hebburn won the Womens' Relay for the third successive year.
Louise Trainor led for Durham on leg 1, ahead of Jarrow's Angela Hunter.
Kathryn Waugh took Chester Le Street into an 8secs lead over Delyth James
of Morpeth on leg 2, with Jarrow, through Sarah Evans, a further 25secs
adrift in third. Claire Simpson (formerly Smallwood), running her first
race since being married in August, soon made up the deficit coming
home 16 secs clear of Chester Le Street, with Durham City taking third
place. Dianne Henaghan, running surprisingly for a Chester Le Street B
team of veterans, clocked easily the fastest time, moving from 6th to 5th
on leg 3.
Morpeth were convincing winners of the Mens' Under 17 event, gaining
revenge on Gateshead who edged them out in the recent Northern Road Relay
championship.
Third leg runner, Ross Floyd, 5th in last season's English Schools'
Intermediate race, clocked the fastest time.

Additional Comments: Almost all of report used. Quick results service
this time, thanks to the George/Audrey/Vera partnership. After previous
two days and early morning rain, I was dreading standing around for 4hrs,
but it was dry throughout, and it developed into a bright sunny afternoon..24
Senior Mens' teams completed (see below), 18 Veterans and 22 Senior Women.
Scaife was 1st on leg 1. He probably does not count for Morpeth, yet.
Not sure why Henaghan ran for B squad, unless they thought there was a
Veterans' team prize. It certainly cost the A team victory. The Jarrow
girls are now coached by David Lowes. Other womens' team splits included
Morpeth B (Gwen Cavill 13:23, Carley Wilson 13:57, Jane Mooney 13:10).
A guest non-scoring Chester Le Street team clocked 44:09. Splits were:
Rachel Barnes 15:02, Amy Bell 15:07, Rebecca Forster 14:00. Sam Crowe clocked
12:54, moving Elswick from 15th to 5th on leg 2. Natalie Dawson finished
12th on leg 1 for Morpeth C (13:40). Lynsey Dodsworth and Chloe Gilmore
ran, but are not included in results. Other personality's times included:
Albert Prouse 15:41 and Ken Sutton 15:14 (in Vets event). Kate Avery was
only Shildon runner on leg 1, but official result gave a different name
!
Heaton fielded one Senior team: Splits were: Scott McEntee 13:21 (25),
Colin McEntee 13:51 (21) and Eric Appleby 15:53 (24) Total time: 43:05.
Sadly Eric's time was the 2nd slowest of all male competitors.

Derwentside 10M.
Stanley. Sun. 10th Oct.
Steven Potts of Sunderland comfortably defeated clubmate Dave Robertson,
to win yesterday's Derwentside 10M Multi Terrain event. On a new course,
consisting mainly of country road and paths, Robertson took an early lead
but was caught by Potts after 1M. The pair actually ran off course at 4M,
but were guided back on to the correct route, by 3rd placed Darren Purvis,
having added some 200m on the official distance. Potts dropped Robertson
at 7M, coming home with 15secs to spare over his rival, who had the consolation
of winning the first veterans' prize. Purvis finished in an isolated third
position. With Paul Given finishing 6th, Sunderland also won the team trophy.
Despite the varying terrain and the blustery conditions, the 140 competitors
(the most for several years) on the whole clocked faster times, than on
the old Road course, which was classed as one of the toughest in Britain.
Tracy Brown of the host club, repeated her 2003 victory in the Womens'
race. After leading from the start, Brown was caught by Elvet veteran,
Fiona Shenton at 9M, but fought back to overhaul her rival in the final
100m. Susan Auld of Heaton finished in 3rd place.
It was a good day for Brown's family as brother Shawn Laws finished
4th, and mother Susan Laws, herself a past winner of the event, was the
leading Over 50 competitor.

Additional Comments: Report slightly edited. Weather cold and bright,
but wind built up during race. 139 finishers (joint last time was 1:51:23).
There were 159 entries (140 started). An excellent results service ( a
full print out within 15mins of last finisher completing) and as usual,
a well organised event by the host club. Had reservations about new course,
but times were a lot faster, which pleased competitors. New course had
runners doing a loop on main street before going on to main route (Robertson
had a 15m lead at this point after 2mins approx). The finish was in a field
about 800m from Centre, but it was quite sheltered (and warmer) there.
Other "personality" performances came from Gary Campbell (18th in 65:26),
Frank Strand (75th in 78:07/2nd M60) and Mal Stephenson (101st in 82:38).
Ray Laverick finished 102nd and Dave Whitmore,109th. Susan Auld finished
52nd. Other Heaton performances were: 56 Chris Auld 69:45; 55 David Wright
74:14; 136 George Routledge 1:46:40.

unexpected). U17M leg positions were Gateshead 1, 5, 1 and Morpeth 3, 4,

2002 Commonwealth Games Steeplechase, took an early lead pulling away to
a 1min 38secs victory over Morpeth's Chris Sampson. Les Atkinson, one week
short of his 50th birthday, was the leading veteran in third position,
and with Gavin Payne 6th, Morpeth comfortably won the team event
Alnwick newcomer Tertia Barnett easily won the Womens' race, and also
led her club to the team honours.

Additional Comments: Most of info used, but in "Sports Shorts". 132
runners in total which is the most for some years. Nice to return to this,
a good race in nice setting. Results, which seemed to take a long time
to compile, divided into Men (104) and Women (28). Started to rain as race
started. Quite damp throughout, and fairly windy. Sun came out when race
was completed. Apologies to R Sewell, who I think is M45. Heaton fielded
7 athletes, which was a major surprise. Pacings were: 22 Par Bhogal 39:58;
47 Allen Mulliss 44:26; 55 Chris Brown 45:26; 58 Chris Ward 45:56; 63 Eric
