BUPA Junior Great North Run.
Gateshead/Newcastle Quayside. Sat. 25th Sept.
Chester Le Street's Andrew Coffer won Saturday's BUPA Junior Great
North Run at the Gateshead and Newcastle Quayside. In the breezy bur thankfully
dry conditions, the 16-year-old from Durham, the current North Eastern
Under 17 3000m champion, waited until the 1M point, before taking the lead
over the 4000-strong field. Coffer stretched his advantage at one time
to 60m over Jonathan Young of Morpeth (8th in 2003), who was closely followed
by clubmate Ross Floyd and Durham's Michael Crawley. Coffer, who admitted
to feeling tired over the last half mile, held on to win by 4secs over
the strong finishing Young, with Floyd taking third place. Crawley finished
in 4th, ahead of Rory Campbell, son of labour spinmaster, Alistair, who
improved on his 16th placing in 2003. Delyth James of Morpeth (also 16),
a sixth form student at King Edward School and the current North Eastern
Under 17 800m and 1500m champion, won the Girls' event finishing in 35th
position overall. The winner was delighted with her victory, which came
as an unexpected surprise. Second place went to 13-year-old Eilish McColgan
(daughter of former World 10000m champion, Liz), who improved on her third
position from 2004. Mary Ferrier of Gateshead (2nd in 2002 and 2003) finishing
3rd this time.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Probably will never know exact
number of finishers. First 148 available on day. Have inserted clubs when
known, and some runners including Campbell, did not have age stated. Race
started from Baltic Centre this time, and athletes did not cross the Millenium
Bridge. Again there were congestion problems but will not comment further.
Will not begin to describe CBBC coverage, but needless to say they missed
Coffer's break (about 5mins into race). Early leader, who got up to about
50m clear was Sam Dickinson (33rd in 14:47), who looked to be wearing a
Bexley vest.
Paul Meynell (Stumpy from BG) was yellow team leader. Also saw Sarah
(surprised how small she is) and Hayley, walking cross finish line near
back of field.

North of England Road Relay Championships.
Blackpool Promenade. Sat. 25th Sept.
Morpeth Harriers were emphatic winners of Saturday's North of England
6 Stage Road Relay championship, at Blackpool Promenade. Dan Samuels finished
in 9th place on leg 1, before John Mooney took Morpeth into the lead on
stage 2. This was the second top class performance from Germany-based
Mooney in 7days (he was fastest in the Sunderland Relays last weekend).
Nick McCormick extended the advantage on leg 3, with the fastest time of
the day. Neil Wilkinson, Terry Wall and Mark Hudspith maintained the lead
as Morpeth crossed the finish line nearly 2mins ahead of Leeds City, with
Altrincham taking the bronze medals. Sunderland finished in a creditable
8th place, with veteran Brian Rushworth, their fastest athlete, moving
from 17th to 9th on leg 2. Loftus in 22nd and Hartlepool (25th) could also
qualify for the National event at Sutton Coldfield, in 4 weeks time.
A weakened Chester Le Street squad lost their Womens' 4 stage title,
finishing in 4th place behind Liverpool Harriers. Sarah Wilkinson, making
a welcome return to competition, after being sidelined with injury, was
their fastest runner finishing 5th on leg 1. Steph Robson moved to 2nd
on leg 2, before Maxine Czarnecka (3rd) and Kathryn Waugh completed their
team. Morpeth finished in 11th place, with 4th leg runner, Aiveen Fox the
fastest, moving up from 17th position. With the BUPA Great North Run taking
place the next day, the turn-out from the region's clubs was less than
usual, with some of the finishing teams, also having to field weakened
line-ups.

Sunderland Harriers Open Cross Country Races.
Farringdon School. Sat. 18th Sept.
Gosforth Harriers were surprise winners of Saturday's Sunderland Harriers
Relay, which opened the Cross Country season, at Farringdon School.
Shaun Moralee led for Durham on leg 1, ahead of last season's Northern
Under 17 champion, Lewis Timmins of Gosforth. Jonathon Graham, making a
welcome return to competition, took the Newcastle squad into the lead,
on leg 2, with Paul Hutton and Matthew Nicholson comfortably holding the
advantage over the host club, with 2003 winners, Morpeth taking third place.
John Mooney running the second leg for Morpeth, clocked the day's fastest
time, and 8secs slower was Ryan McLeod, who lifted Elswick from 17th to
8th on leg 2.
Sunderland led all the way, to win the Veterans' race, with British
champion, Brian Rushworth, clocking the fastest time on the 2nd leg. Jonathon
Young of Morpeth held off the strong challenge of clubmate, Ross Floyd
in the Under 17 race. The performance of the runner-up was all the more
creditable as he missed the whole of the summer season, through injury,
having spent some time on crutches.
Chester Le Street provided the first six finishers in the Womens' race,
with Kathryn Waugh coming home ahead of Steph Robson and Maxine Czarnecka.
Caroline Bowman was the leading veteran, in 5th place. The result of the
Under 17 race, was a continuation of last season, as Mary Ferrier of Gateshead,
held off her great rival, Delyth James of Morpeth. Fastest femalel of the
day however, was 2003 North Eastern Under 13 champion, Laura Weightman
of Morpeth, who easily won the Under 15 event.

Did not attend as I was due to got to European Clubs Cup, but was laid
low with heavy cold. Results courtesy of George Ogle. Weather (at home)
was sunny and quite warm. Young athletes races were merged, which made
it a quicker programme. 15 Mens' (+ 5 incomplete) teams in Senior Relay
and 5 (+1) in Veterans' event. Senior Womens' race had 22 runners and there
were 6 U17 athletes. Query the fact that D Young was faster than Wallsend
clubmate Paul Merrison. Heaton only had 2 competitors: Scott McEntee (20th
in 11:25) and Mal Gibson (20th in 11:43) started Senior Relay. Eric Appleby
decided not to run.

Tynedale Jelly Tea 10M Road Race.
Hexham - Ovingham. Sun. 12th Sept.
Andy Caine of Tynedale was an emphatic winner of his own club's 16th
Jelly Tea 10M Road race, from Hexham to Ovingham, yesterday. Caine, second
in 2003, soon headed the 270-strong field, opening up a minute lead on
Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street at the halfway point (24:47). Although
visibly slowing in the closing stages, in the cold windy conditions, Caine
still increased his advantage to nearly 3mins over Bell, at the finish
line in the grounds of Ovingham Middle School. Bell just held off the strong
late challenge of David Robertson , who led home both the veterans and
also the successful Sunderland team. The first three also gained the medals
in the incorporated North Eastern Counties' championship. The two minor
medallists were also previous winners, Bell as recently as 2001.
Judith Nutt repeated her 2003 victory in the Womens' race, taking the
North Eastern title for the 3rd successive year (she also won, when the
championship was held at Blyth in 2002).
Sarah Huntley of Gateshead took second place ahead of Lisa Walker,
who led the emerging Wallsend squad to the team title.

sure if any others) dropping out. Lenny Christopher finished in a distressed
state (very de-hydrated), John Maddison walked in and Eric Appleby (26th)
lost interest when Reg Checkley (25th) passed him at 2M. Julie Cross finished
19th. Winner was pleased with run, but complained about the heat (along
with.others including Jacqui Elliott). Other Heaton performances came from
Allen Mulliss (16th in 46:13), and George Routledge (30th in 70:50). They
were second veterans team behind Sunderland.
