March 2006

Weekly Round-up
(to 26th Mch).
Congratulations to all medallists in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne (18th-25th Mch). North East performances were: 1500: 5 Nick McCormick 3:39.55 (3:38.66 ht) (1 N Willis - NZ 3:38.49)  LJ: 6 Chris Tomlinson 7.96 (1 I Gaisah - Gha 8.20)  W 20km Walk: 7 Johanna Jackson 1:42:04 (1 J Saville - Aus 92:46). Thought McCormick's race was affected when Mottram fell, and he deserved a medal. England's Senior Womens' 4 x 400m team were unlucky to be disqualified. I think sense should have prevailed, as they were by far the best team.
At the Carlisle Aspatria Open Meeting (I think the first on the new Carlisle track), results included: SW: 100: 1 K Thomas 12.0 (pb); 2 J Graham 12.2 (pb)  200: 1 K Thomas 25.0 (pb); 2 J Graham 25.6  U15G: 100: A: 1 A Stone 12.9  B: 1 J Ellis 12.9  200: 1 J Ellis 26.8; 2 A Stone 27.1  LJ: 1 E Pringle 4.83  U13G: 100: 1 J Read 13.4  LJ: 1 J Read 4.51 (original and more detailed info from Bill Read). Wind conditions were favourable.
Winner of Magical Mystery Tour Fell Race at Commondale, North Yorks was J Barwick (NYM, M40) 41:10.
Result of Brough Lane Fell Race at Ingham, North'd was: 1 W Horsley (NFR) 39:58  Women: 1 V Oldham (Nor) 43:12; 2 K Robertson 45:07.

At the Southern 12 Stage Road Relay at Milton Keynes, David Anderson ran the 11th (long) leg for the winning Belgrave team. He clocked 24mins 8secs. Belgrave's winning time (by nearly 7mins) was 4hrs 12mins 38secs, with Newham and Essex Beagles 3rd (4:21:14). Steve Hepples clocked 16mins 33secs for leg 4 and Rob Cole, 17mins 19secs, for leg 6. Steve Sharp of Belgrave was the only riunner faster than Hepples (16:28).
Result of UK Police Cross Country Championship at Paramsporth (Cornwall) (22nd Mch) (not a great North East presence) was: 1 M Williams (W Mids) 46:06; 2 M Tomlinson (Northb) 47:15; 9 J Bent (Northb) 49:53
John Moore won the B race in the M35 1500m at the World Veterans' Indoor Championships at Linz (info from JM). His time was 4:15a and he was 6th best overall. Jim Caddy was 2nd in the M80 1500m (7:59.17) and Kath Stewart 2nd in the W65 1500m (6:12.10).

English Schools Cross Country Championships.
Berry Hill Park, Mansfield.  Sat. 25th Mch.
North East athletes gained more successes, at Saturday's English Schools Cross Country Championships, at a dry and mild Berry Hill Park, Mansfield. Pride of place went to Durham's Kate Avery, who dominated from the front in the Junior Girls' race, holding off a strong challenge from Kate Holt of Staffordshire. Avery, recently 3rd in the Inter counties' event for Under 15's, improved on her fifth placing in 2005.
Ricky Stevenson of Cleveland, second in the recent National Cross Country Championships at Under 17 level, recovered from his traumatic experiences at the Inter Counties' race (he collapsed 100m from finish when lying second) moved through the field to take second again in the Senior Boys' event, behind Fell Running specialist, Alastair Brownlee of West Yorkshire.
Inter Counties' Under 15 champion, Laura Weightman of Northumberland, who led early on against older athletes, in the Intermediate Girls' event, faded to 8th at the finish, but still qualified to represent England in the International at Stowe on 8th April.
Northumberland's Ross Murray, second in the Junior race in 2005, took 9th place in the Intermediate event. However, some of the runners ahead of him, represent England in an International event in Italy, enabling him to secure a spot in the team for Stowe. Avery, Weightman and Murray were gaining their International vests, for the 2nd successive year.
Northumberland's Mary Ferrier finished an excellent 5th in the Senior Girls' race, behind Gloucestershire's Emily Pidgeon, who gained her 5th successive Schools' Cross Country title. Cleveland's Jon Taylor finished 8th in the Senior Boys' event.
Though not gaining any team medals, Northumberland did win a trophy for being the first team, in the eight counter scoring competition, for Intermediate Boys.
Northumberland also finished 2nd team in the B Group in the Overall Girls' team competition.

North of England Road Relay Championships.
Heaton Park, Manchester.  Sat. 25th Mch.
Chester Le Street stole the honours at Saturday's North of England Road Relay Championships, at Heaton Park, Manchester, winning the Womens' 6 stage event. However, the Mens' teams struggled, with Morpeth, winners since 1999, coming home in 16th position.
Chester Le Street, who last won this event in 2003, made a steady start through Steph Robson (14th), Emma Waterhouse (10th) and Sarah Wilkinson (6th). Morag McDonnell clocked the day's fastest time moving Chester Le Street into the lead on leg 4. Maxine Czarnecka and Alyson Dixon (her time only being beaten by McDonnell and Liverpool's Jenny Clague), brought the Durham club home, over 90secs ahead of their nearest rivals, Wigan. Morpeth (4th after leg 4), finished in a creditable 8th position.
In the Mens' 12 Stage race, Sunderland, through Brian Rushworth, Mark Hood and Gavin Massingham, held the lead after 3 legs, before fading to 23rd. Gateshead led the region's challenge in 13th place, with Alan Buckley taking them into 3rd place after leg 4.
One place behind were Chester Le Street, while a badly depleted Morpeth squad, lying 9th after leg 11, had to rely on club secretary, Mike Bateman, to "come out of retirement" to bring them home. All the leading North East clubs, should however, qualify for the National event at Sutton Coldfield in 2 weeks time.

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Berry Edge, Consett.  Sat. 18th Mch.
Defending champions, Sunderland Harriers extended their lead at the top of the Senior Mens' Division 1 table, after Saturday's penultimate Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League fixture at a bitterly cold Berry Edge, Consett. Despiting losing on the day to Tynedale, league leaders, Elvet Striders also pulled further away from their rivals, in the Senior Womens' competition.
Morpeth's Jonathan Young, a member of the North East silver medal Under 20 team, in last weekend's Inter Counties Championships at Nottingham, overhauled long-time leader Barry Jameson of Tynedale, on the hilly course, with 300m remaining to win the Mens' individual race. Young running from the medium pack, was giving his rival a 2mins 30secs start but was able to extend his advantage to at the finish line. The winner now goes on, to represent Northumberland in this weekend's English Schools Championships, at Mansfield. Fast pack runner, Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street moved through the field of over 200 runners, to finish third in the day's fastest time. Sunderland packed well, with Paul Redman leading their counters in 9th position.
Donna James of Elvet, joined the elite band of fast pack winners, when claiming victory in the Senior Womens' race. James passed Vicky Booth of Sunderland, who led from the start, also in the final 300m. Joanne Dooley led Tynedale's challenge in third. James, the current Veterans' North East champion, was a member of the winning North East team at Nottingham.
A similar pattern was set in the Junior Womens' race, when Wallsend's Joy Fenwick had led all the way, only to be overhauled by Tynedale's Stacey Smith, from the fast pack, in the final 200m.
Blaydon's Helen Girtig, like James, a gold medallist for the North East team this time in the Inter Counties' Under 15 event, soon made up the deficit on the slow pack, to impressively win her age-group from the fast pack.
Carl Bell of Gateshead also won the Under 15 Boys' race from the fast pack, but was only given victory after the first runner across the line was disqualified.
Cameron Boyek of Shildon, the Durham Schools' Minors champion, gave an impressive front running display when winning the Under 13 Boys' race.
Marty Cairns of Morpeth (Under 17 Men) and Charlotte Strong of Durham (Under 13 Girls), were the day's other winners.

North Eastern Counties' A.A Indoor Pentathlon Championships.
Gateshead Indoor Arena.  Sat.18th Mch.
Gateshead Harrier John Stacey fought off the strong challenge of clubmate, Lewis Robson to win the Senior event, at Saturday's North Eastern Counties' Indoor Championships, at Gateshead Indoor Arena. The pair were well matched after the first two events, with Robson taking a slight advantage after the Shot. However, Stacey, a High Jump specialist, gained the necessary lead at this discipline, to take the title. Best High Jump performance went to Gateshead's 2004 English Schools Junior champion, Philip Collins who cleared a personal best height. However, he still had to settle for the silver medal in the Under 17 event, behind Jarrow's Philippe Goessen. Emma Morris of South Shields, easily won the Senior Womens' event. 24th Tees Valley Half Marathon.
Redcar. Sun. 12th March.
Steve Hepples of Newham and Essex Beagles running under his Loftus vest, repeated his 2005 victory, in yesterday's 24th Tees Valley Half Marathon, also taking the incorporated North Eastern Counties' title. In the bitterly cold, but thankfully dry conditions, Hepples along with visiting Birchfield Harrier, Julian Moorhouse soon headed the 1300-strong field, before dropping his rival, who was suffering from stitch, at the 4M point. Hepples' margin of victory was 100m, ahead of Moorhouse, with Nathaniel Williams of N Yorks Moors (3rd) and Steve Potts of Sunderland (4th) taking the minor county medals. Darlington's Martin Grainger was the leading veteran in 5th place.
Elswick's Judith Nutt (3rd in 2005), easily won the Womens' race and the county championship, adding to her previous 3 titles at 10M. Louise Noble of Sunderland finished 2nd, with veteran Fiona Shenton of Elvet Striders taking 3rd.

Earl Gill of Gateshead set new figures in the Under 15 Triple Jump. Middlesbrough's Lloyd Powell equalled the record in the Under 20 High Jump.

Additional Comments:  All info used. Apologies if any errors/omissions but I had a rather "torrid" time processing these results.
Arena more "completed" than I suspected. Probably too many events going on at start of programme, and only High Jumps in final hour. During of meeting was 6.5 hours. Rachel Davidson ran identical time in heat, semi and final. Thought Cowie won U15 60m by half-a-metre. Thanks to Vera for results. Apologies to Nathan Mersh of Sunderland, who actually won U15 60M Hurdles. His time was 10.09secs. On results sheets he was listed as third (I don't know how this sometimes happens ?). Unfortunately, I did not spot this, as due to winner being outside AW standard, I did not analyse full result.
