Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League Sherman Cup and Davison Shield Cross Country Races.
Temple Park Leisure Centre, South Shields.  Sat. 21st Jan.
Morpeth Harriers retained both trophies, the Sherman Cup for Men and Davison Shield for Women, at Temple Park on Saturday. For good measure Morpeth provided all the individual winners of the eight races, though there was some controversy in the Senior Womens' event.
Conditions underfoot were muddier than usual at this venue, though there was a cool drying wind blowing.
Marcus Cram opened the programme with a comfortable victory in the Under 13 Boys' race, before Niick Swinburn won a competitive Senior Mens' event. Swinburn, the English Junior Fell Running champion, was joined in the opening stages by clubmates Ross Floyd, David Swinburne and Sean Kirtley the quartet holding a comfortable lead after the first of the three laps. Kirtley soon lost contact, followed by Swinburne, but Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street was making inroads on the leaders after lap 2. Bell took the lead for a brief period, before Swinburn, who 4 days earlier won the Northumberland Schools title, made his bid for victory with half a lap remaining. Swinburn crossed the finish line 7secs ahead of Bell, with Floyd holding on well to third place. Robert Bambra (Under 17) and Karl Taylor (Under 15) also won their respective races. Team victories in the first two events plus the Under 17 race, saw Morpeth win the Sherman Cup, which is given to the best overall club in the 4 races, for the fifth successive year. Sadly the Northumberland club were the only squad to close in teams in all the races. Tynedale, who won the Under 15 team event, took second place ahead of Gateshead
Morpeth also retained the equivalent Davison Shield competition for Women, winning the Under 13 and Under 15 team events, though they, like 2nd placed Gateshead and Gosforth (3rd) only closed in 3 teams.
Hannah Rank (Under 13), Laura Weightman (Under 15), Rachel Adams (Junior) and Jane Mooney (Senior) were the individual winners. In the Senior event, Mooney took an early lead closely followed by Louise Noble of Sunderland, with Maxine Czarnecka of Chester Le Street lying in third. Noble overtook Mooney some 800m from the finish opening up a 20m lead. However, Noble mistook the finish line slowing to a walk, and was overtaken again by Mooney on the line. Heaton edged out Morpeth by countback in the team competition, with Gateshead easily winning the Junior event.

Northumberland Schools Cross Country Championships.
Newcastle Town Moor.  Tues. 17th Jan.
Fell Running specialist, Nick Swinburn found the hills on the course to his liking, when comfortably winning the Senior Boy's title at yesterday's Northumberland Schools Cross Country Championships, on a cold Town Moor. Swinburn came home ahead of East Northumberland team-mate Ross Floyd, with Newcastle's Jonathan Pearson in 3rd.
Delyth James of East Northumberland retained her Senior Girls' title, finishing well ahead of her great rival, Mary Ferrier of Tynedale. Ross Murray of North Tyneside, 2nd in the English Junior championship at Norwich, last year, moved up an age-group to comfortably win the Intermediate Boys' event. Laura Weightman of North Northumberland, the 2005 Junior champion, easily won the Intermediate Girls' race. Marcus Cram (son of Steve) representing East Northumberland, took the Junior Boys' title. Emma Masson of Newcastle won a closely contested Junior Girls' race.

Additional Comments:  Not used but in on Thurs (19th). No official results compiled on day, so had to send in those available. There are a few initial errors due in some cases to misleading info, from some onlookers. Listed below are more accurate AW results (these adapted from full results courtesy of Paul Ponton). Weather was a lot colder and breezier than more "inland" places. At least it was dry. Other positions include SG: 16 A Bell (Nc) and 20 C Gilmore (NT). Due to SG/IG mixed race, times after Vicky Beck in SG were estimated, as they were not taken. Programme at start of meeting (SB 12.00, MG 12.05, MB 12.10), needs to be revised slightly as at one time 3 races were finishing at same time, which caused some chaos in funnels. Also one team manager (not sure which), could not fill his results envelope in properly.

Durham Cathedral Cross Country Relays.
Race Course, Durham.  Sun. 15th Jan.
Morpeth Harriers regained the Senior Mens' title at yesterday's Durham Cathedral Cross Country Relays, but it was their B team taking the honours ahead of 2005 winners, Sunderland. The Wearsiders led on leg 1 with Gavin Massingham proving too quick at the finish for Morpeth's North Eastern Championship bronze medallist, Mark Brown. The two teams were still well matched on leg 2 as Morpeth's Chris Sampson edged out 3-times British Masters Champion, Brian Rushworth who opted to run for the Sunderland Senior team on this occasion. The result was quickly decided on the final leg, as Ian Hudspith soon pulled away from Patrick Martin, Hudspith's time was also the fastest overall. The Morpeth C team came home third, a position they held throughout. The final runner, Mark Hudspith was returning to action after being sidelined with injury and illness, for the last 4 months. For good measure the Morpeth C team finished 4th.
Sunderland gained some consolation when they retained the Veterans' title. The event also incorporated the Veterans A.A - North East Championship. Sunderland led all the way with the first two runners, Tim Field and Tom Doughty respectively clocking the fastest two times. Steve Coxon anchored Sunderland to victory. Sunderland B held 2nd position, until the final leg, before strong runs by Durham through Rob Hand and North Shields Poly (Tony Wallett) took them into the minor medal positions. Morpeth in 5th also took the Over 50 title.
Like in the Mens' race, it was a B team that took the honours in the Womens' race. This time Chester Le Street won the event for the 5th successive year, with the A team finishing 2nd. A good battle on leg 1 saw Aiveen Fox the Northern Under 20 champion, this time running in the Durham University colours, come home ahead of Morpeth clubmate and Northern Under 17 champion, Delyth James. Maxine Czarnecka was lying in 5th for Chester Le Street B, with Angie Watson in 6th for the A team. Alyson Dixon, with the day's fastest time, moved to the front on leg 2, with Kerry Matthew maintaining the advantage on the final leg. Sarah Wilkinson lifted the A team to 2nd on leg 2, before Morag McDonnell, sidelined with injury since August, brought the squad home. Third across the line were the Durham City Veterans' team of Debbie Hales, Denise Todd and Caroline Ratcliff, with Jarrow and Hebburn in 4th.
Tynedale and North Shields Poly took the minor Veterans' awards. Hales was the fastest official veteran, though her time was somewhat slower than Wilkinson, who is in the Over 35 age-group.

Durham Schools Cross Country Championships.
Meadowfield Sports Centre, Durham.  Sat. 14th Jan.
Durham Central were again the strongest area at Saturday's Durham Schools Cross Country Championships, at Meadowfield, winning six of the eight team titles. The weather was thankfully dry and mild, and underfoot conditions were much drier than of late. Durham were successful in the Senior Boys' race, with Michael Crawley comfortably winning the individual title, from Sean Hall (Gateshead) and Jack Martin (Wearside). For good measure, Carl Smith also won the Intermediate event. The in-form Alex Snook, from Darlington took the Senior Girls' title after a close battle with Durham's Lyndsey Dodsworth. Kate Avery of South West Durham, 5th in the 2005 English event at Norwich, easily retained her Junior title, coming home well clear of the 2005 Minor champion, Sigourney Bell of Gateshead. The pair are also current North Eastern Counties' champions at Under 15 and Under 13 level, respectively. Additional Comments: Only early part of report used. Results courtesy of Pat Narey (handwritten by assistant). Apologies therefore for any incorrect spelling especially of "lesser known" names. Max Coleby was course director. Good runs from Coleby girls but they have not done much stamina training. Darlington did not put in their declaration card in IB race, so name not available. His first name was Tom, and I think the name included is from that area. In SG event, LD overhauled long-time leader AS at halfway opening up a 20m lead. Nicola Pearson competed in IG event, finishing (I think) in the 20's. Interesting name not in this result was A Suffield. Steph Crowell finished 15th in 19:09. A good run by Eleanor Murray but not a great overall standard. Steph Loraine transferred from Central HS to Emmanuel College over Xmas. Anthony Colwell (now at Gateshead College) ran in SB race. He finished 13th in 28:37. There were about 17 runners and 14 in SG event (G Douglas also Gates Coll was 13th).

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Farringdon College, Sunderland.  Sat. 7th Jan.
Defending champions Sunderland strengthened their lead at the head of the Mens' Division 1 table, at their own promotion at Farringdon, on Saturday. The Wearsiders held off the challenge of Morpeth and Durham, although on the day, Chester Le Street from Division 3 proved to be the strongest team. Kielder-based David Kirkland, winner of the Jedburgh Half Marathon in 2004 and 2005,  gained an easy victory in the individual race. The Alnwick Harrier, running from the slow pack, dropped former Junior International, Chris Lamb of Chester Le Street after the first of the three muddy laps. Medium pack runners stole the honours among the fastest times, with fourth placed Junior Fell Running International, Nick Swinburn of Morpeth the quickest, just ahead of Sunderland veteran Tim Field.
The host club provided the Senior Womens' race winner, Michelle Holt, with Jane Mooney of Morpeth taking second place, from the fast pack. Tynedale took the team awards, as Elvet Striders overhauled leaders Heaton ( 7th on this occasion) in the Overall table. Mooney's time however, was bettered by over a minute by Delyth James, the 2005 North of England Under 17 champion, who won the Junior race from the fast pack.
Laura Weightman of Morpeth narrowly defeated her great rival Kate Avery of Shildon for the first time this season, the pair finishing 2nd and 3rd from the fast pack in the Under 15 race won by Emma Toogood of Durham.
John Gibson of Gateshead comfortably won the Under 17 race, with Junior Great North Run winner and fellow Royal Grammar School student, Jonathan Pearson of Elswick clocking the fastest time in third. Sadly this event produced a disapointingly small field of 11 runners. Gregor Rowe of Blaydon led all the way to win the Under 15 event, just holding off the challenge from fast pack runner and Schools International, Ross Murray of Gateshead.
Daniel Wood of Sunderland also dominated the Under 13 race from the start, with the fastest time going to 4th placed Marcus Cram of Morpeth.
Mariska Simpson of Morpeth again dominated the Girls Under 13 event, her clubmate Hannah Park clocking the fastest time in 4th.

Morpeth Harriers Road Race.
Sun. 1st Jan.
Mark Brown led the host club to a clean sweep at yesterday's Morpeth Harriers New Years Day Road Race. Despite the bright weather, the still treacherous underfoot conditions beside the river in Carlisle Park, meant the last km of the advertised 11km course had to be omitted, leaving the runners finishing just inside the Park gates. A leading group of 4 runners headed the field approaching Mitford, with Brown being joined by clubmates Nathan Shrubb, winner in 2004 and 2005, and twice North Eastern Cross Country champion, Neil Wilkinson, with Jon Arxher of Low Fell keeping the trio company. Archer was the first to lose contact at 2M, and then Shrubb dropped back at the halfway point. Brown made his effort on the final hilly stretch approaching 4M, opening up a 30m lead at one stage. However, Wilkinson fought his way back on the final section of the course, which was mainly downhill and was locked together with Brown, for the last 1.5M of the race, before Brown kicked away in the final 100m. The winning margin, by the Inland Revenue official was 2 secs. Shrubb finished in an isolated third position ahead of Archer, with another Morpeth Harrier, Les Atkinson the leading veteran in 5th. Morpeth also provided the Womens' winner with King Edward School sixth form student, Delyth James finishing in 20th position overall.
