North of England Junior Track and Field
Championships.
South Leeds Stadium. Sat/Sun. 27th/28th May.
Blaydon throwers stole the honours for the region, at yesterday's second
part of the North of England Junior Championships, at South Leeds Stadium.
Tyne Breen won both the Discus and Shot in the Under 15 Girls' age-group.
Clubmate Philip Brown won the Under 17 Shot and took second in the Discus
with a series of personal best throws in each compoetition. Brown led all
the way in the latter event, but was beaten on countback, by the final
throw of Stockport's Greg Watkins.
The pair along with the region's leading Senior thrower, Lianne Tucker
are coached by Tony Livingstone.
The North East's sole track success came in the final event, when Stacey
Smith of Tynedale, winner in the Under 15 age-group two years ago, proved
too quick in the finishing straight for her rivals in the Under 17 Girls'
800m. Middlesbrough athletes Yusuf Aliu and Adam Allison were beaten for
gold by the narrowest of margins in the Under 17 100m and 400m respectively.
Chloe Gill also of Middlesbrough, had to settle for second in the Under
15 Girls' Long Jump. Durham's Rebekah Wilmshurst, despite only qualifying
as a fastest loser, was a close second in the Under 17 200m adding to her
100m bronze, 24 hours earlier. Bronze medals went to Carl Smith of Chester
Le Street (Under 17 3000m), Rebecca Liddell of Gateshead (Under 15 75m
Hurdles) and Rebecca Pottinger of Birtley (Under 17 High Jump).

North Eastern Counties A.A Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium. Sat/Sun. 13th/14th May.
The cold conditions affected the performances at this weekend's North
Eastern Counties Track and Field Championships ,at Gateshead International
Stadium. Sprinters were on the whole assisted by the wind, on Saturday,
but faced a strong headwind yesterday.
Newcastle University student, David Riley of Morpeth, the 1999 English
Schools Junior 200m champion, gained the first Senior sprint treble for
many years, taking the 400m and 100m titles on Saturday, and the 200m yesterday.
Brother and sister, Richard and Heidi Kilty of Gateshead gained sprint
doubles in the Under 17 Men and Under 15 Girls age-groups respectively.
Richard equalled his personal best, set up when finishing third in the
2005 English Schools event, when narrowly winning the 100m.
Gateshead's Lauren Arthur, the fastest female sprinter in action, won
the Under 20 100m and 200m titles, setting new figures in the 200m. Gateshead's
Jessica Read broke two records in the Under 13 age-group. She bettered
the old figures in the Long Jump by a massive 45cms and against a strong
wind, clipped the old record in her heat of the 100m. An even stronger
wind put paid to any repeat performance in the final. Blaydon's Lianne
Tucker gained four titles winning the Shot and Discus in both the Under
20 and Senior age-groups. Her Shot performance in the Junior age-group
was also a championship best. Clubmate Tyne Breen also broke the record
in the Under 15 Shot. Birtley's Katy Wilson bettered the old figures in
the Under 20 Hammer. Julia Straker of Morpeth set new figures in the Senior
Triple Jump, while Shildon's Melissa Carr broke Straker's old record in
the Under 20 age-group.
Middlesbrough's Adebayo Babatunde added 11cms to the old record in
the Under 20 Triple Jump and also took the Long Jump title. Gateshead's
Sally Scott bettered her old figures in the Under 17 Pole Vault, and. Newcastle
student, Sarah Dunkley improved the old figures in the Under 20 Javelin
by over 4m.
Emma Morrris equalled the record in the Senior High Jump and also won
the 200m and 100m Hurdles.
English Schools Cross Country champion, Kate Avery of Shildon clocked
a personal best time to win the Under 15 Girls' 1500m. Shaun Moralee of
Durham, one of the region's most consistent performers over the past 3
years, gained ample reward when winning a competitive Senior Mens' 1500m.
He was presented with the trophy by local official, George Ogle, who won
the equivalent title, 50 years ago. Gosforth's Lewis Timmins won an equally
competitive Under 20 1500m, catching long-time leader, John Taylor of Middlesbrough
on the line. Taylor gained some consolation winning the 3000m, 24hours
later.
One of the most exciting races came in the Under 15 Girls' 800m, where
Gateshead's Sigourney Bell caught Birtley's Steph Loraine who had opened
up a 20m lead at one stage, with 40m remaining. Gateshead's Adam
Rowland gained an impressive double victory in the Under 15 400m and 800m.
Gateshead's Vicky Carmichael smashed her personal best time to win the
Senior Womens' 400m. Elswick's Ashley Gibson won the 1500m coming home
ahead of 5000m winner Rosie Smith of Durham.
British Universities' silver medallist, Andrew Teate of Middlesbrough
won the Senior 800m, with Gateshead's Kieran Flannery retaining his Under
20 title.

National Junior League.
Northern Premier. Gateshead International Stadium. 7th May.
Gateshead Harriers retained their lead in the table, at yesterday's
second National Junior League Premier Division fixture, at the International
Stadium. Despite scoring no points in the opening event, the Mens' Long
Jump, through both competitors no-jumping, the Tyneside squad gradually
amassed the points to defeat their nearest rivals Trafford and the Scotland
based, Team Kingdom. In the first track event the 400m Hurdles, Lorna McMichael
clocked a personal best time but was well beaten by Kingdom's Elidh Child,
who broke her own league record, with a time of 59.7secs. Another personal
best came from Sean Hall, who led all the way to win the final individual
event, the 2000m Steeplechase. Kieran Flannery won the 800m and clocked
a 49.1secs, final leg, to make up 20m on the Kingdom runner, going down
by less than a metre in the 4 x 400m Relay. Sally Scott and Vicky Holmes
took maximum points in the Womens' Pole Vault. Ross Dixon shared victory
in the Mens' Pole Vault with James Stacey winning the B competition. Melissa
Carr took first place in the Triple Jump.

Additional Comments: Only results sent due to time lapse. Weather bright
and a lot milder. Some wind around as sprint times were slow. Good entry
for 800m but not in 100m. Andrew Sturrock (sole competitor) injured himself
in 110m Hurdles. Steeplechase not ran as only one competitor was entered.
Only one team in male U15 4 x 100. Five in Womens' race with three teams
from Gateshead (C team disqualified for fielding an athlete, who was a
member of Morpeth an hour earlier). Excellent run for long-time leader,
Vicky Carmichael in 800m. Meeting finished at 9.20pm. MoM awards went to

Course was by riverside. Quite fast but cold wind slowed runners. Would
rather not comment on certain matters relating to this event. Picked up
some official times from recorders but there was some variance with results,
that later appeared on BMH website. Also second lady (from Darlington)
who clocked 45mins exactly, not listed. Other times included (actual followed
by website): R Sherwood 43:21 (18); I Barnes 49:35 (27); P Braney 54:25

(40:51). Also 80 Allen Mulliss 45:32 (31).
In AW, L Noble of Darlington listed as 2nd lady in 43mins 58secs. 1st
