Additional Comments: Info courtesy of AW. Will send to Journal for Monday
(8th July). Results not even on ukathletics website, by Tuesday night.
Congratulations to Gemma, who has been selected for World Juniors in Jamaica.
She was slightly faster, though wind assisted in heat (ahead of Ennis).
Unfortunately she will miss English Schools Championships, and a certain
gold for Northumberland. Good standard in Under 20 events, but moderate
at Under 23 level. Ryan McLeod (4:01.5) was knocked out in 1500m heat.

Additional Comments: Info courtesy of AW. Score of Inter Girls runner-up
omitted. Will send results for Journal (8th July). Good performance by
Emma Morris. Craig Glanville improved on Day 2. Mick Groves was Chief Timekeeper,
(John Gwyther cried off on the Saturday) and there were complaints no lap
times were called in 800m. Apparently it was pouring down at time (and
had been most of day). Roy West (starter) disappeared to pub to watch World
Cup Final, and could not be found when later races were brought forward
(about 15 mins).

English Schools Regional Combined Events Championship.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Sat. 29th June.
Durham's Lewis Robson maintained his season's unbeaten record, when
winning the Junior Boys' Pentathlon, at the English Schools' North East
Region Combined Events meeting at Jarrow, on Saturday. For good measure,
Robson, who took all the major Indoor Pentathlon titles during the winter,
bettered team mate Craig Glanville's 2001 championship record by 23
points. The Gateshead Harrier, a pupil at Biddick School, Washington, led
from the start winning the 80m Hurdles, Shot (with a personal best throw)
and Long Jump. There was a temporary setback in the High Jump, but
in the last event the 800m, Robson was easily the fastest, clocking a personal
best time. His overall score, however, was some 30 short of his best figures,
probably due in no small way to the windy conditions. Durham easily won
the team event, with Robson ably supported by Ryan Tinkler (4th) and Martin
Galler (7th). The three members of the Durham squad thus qualify for the
National Final in September, along with fifth-placed Simon Egdell
of Northumberland.
Result.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 1st July 2002).
Additional Comments: All info used. Details of Day 2 to follow. Robson's
(4th in High Jump), best was set at Durham Schools' qualifier, and probaby
did not have the necessary number of graded officials. Meeting well organised
as usual by Pat Neary, (it also ran about 15 mins ahead of timetable -
RH please note), who also provided results.
Weather was fine and wind probably helped sprinters. The first team
plus the leading three individuals, not in winning team, qualify for Final.
Among computer results helpers were Katy Beaton and Laura Hunter.
Emma Morris led at halfway in Intermediate Girls Heptathlon. Craig
Glanville (50.9 in 400), was struggling otherwise in Intermediate Boys'
Octathlon. Carla Taylor (surprise, surprise), did not turn up for Senior
Girls' event. Very few from South Yorkshire (Jessica Ennis not entered),
partly due to the fact, that their athletes e were getting a free trip
to the Sheffield Grand Prix. No competitors at all, from Cleveland, which
meant turn-out was much poorer than 2001.

Windy again, but some track events seemed to be more affected than
others. In 5000m, group of eight went through 3000m in 9:45. John M seemed
very heavy legged (after Croxdale) and was dropped by Armsworth's burst
three laps from home. He hauled passed Paul Johnson on last lap. Good performance
by Ashley Gibson, who seemed to have Sam Crowe as pacemaker for first lap
(70secs). I think first three all got pb's. Claire missed pb by 0.4 secs.
Vicky C (only Senior in 200m), looked impressive against good Under 17
Field. She later ran 800m (fifth of five). Again poor turn-out of Senior/Junior
Women. Also Under 13 Boys (only two in 200m, ran with Girls) and five in
800m. Other age-groups on par. Three Senior 800m races. Vince intended
to run all three (as training session). He did enough to win A race, but
dropped out when struggling after one lap, in race 2. Unofficially, best
performances of meeting were from Lisa-Marie Shippen (along with Rebecca
Shield) and Andrew Welford (Adam Henderson took award at Meeting 1).

Croxdale 10M Road Race.
Sun. 23rd June.
Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street won his third race in eight days,
when he destroyed the opposition in yesterday's Croxdale 10M Road Race.
In the windy conditions, Bell, successful recently at Newton Aycliffe and
Newburn, led from the start over the four lap course, coming home nearly
3 minutes ahead of Elswick's Ieuan Ellis, with John Moore of Heaton taking
third place. Bell bettered the inaugural course for the new adapted course,
first used in 2001, by 45 secs. There was disappointment for second placed
Ellis, as being a late entry, he did not qualify for the silver medal,
in the incorporated North East Counties' Championship, or the Veterans'
A.A North East gold, which was won by Alan Dent of Blaydon. Judith Nutt
of Elswick added to her recent win in the Blyth Valley 10M, with an easy
victory here. Clubmate Yvonne Swinhoe was over 5 minutes adrift in second
place, but took the veterans' title, with Kelly Bentley of Houghton and
Peterlee finishing third. In the Open 5M event, held over two laps, Salford
Harrier, Malcolm Price, running his first race as a veteran, also set new
figures, coming home a minute ahead of Sunderland's Tim Field.

Additional Comments: All info used. Stewart Bell's laps were 12:48,
26:04 and 39:13. Mark Slesser (dropped by John after 5M), was denied medal
for same reason as Ellis. John's halfway time was 27:46. Eric finished
14th out of 24 in 5M event. Kelly was 40th and Margaret 43rd. Gary Campbell
(24th in 71:46) and Allen Mulliss (30th in 74:05 were other Heaton athletes.
Allen actually won V40 gold medal, due to Ellis's late entry. Only about
50 finishers. Ted J (69:03 at 5M), was lapped (at least once) by all of
field, and would not have received an official time. No one waited after
second last runner finished (1:40). Very blustery on exposed parts, though
weather was nice. This is one of the best, and also most picturesque, races
in the area, and deserves better support. It seems from info picked up,
that many of today's (lesser) runners do not like lapped courses. The reason
for the lack of the region's "top athletes" (in most local races), I prefer
not to comment on.

Inter Counties Schools' Track and Field Meeting.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Sat. 22nd June.
A strong headwind in the finishing straight, affected the Track performances,
so it was the Field event athletes, who took pride of place at Saturday's
Inter County Schools' competition, at Jarrow. Host county, Durham narrowly
won the event, with less than 80 points separating the four teams at the
finish. There were several National Entry standards achieved. Leading the
way for Durham was Lianne Tucker, who maintained her season's unbeaten
record, to win the Intermediate Discus. Emma Morris of Durham, the Northern
Heptathlon champion, took the Intermediate High Jump, narrowly defaeting
Cumbria's Sarah Allison. In the Intermediate Boys' category, Durham's Graham
Jackson, the 2001 English Schools' silver medallist, was successful in
his speciality Triple Jump, and also took the Long Jump. Northern Under
20 champion, Keith Higham of Cumbria, won the Pole Vault. Cleveland's Leslie
Richards won the Senior Discus and Caroline Sellars of Cleveland was successful
in the Junior Girls' High Jump. Charles Hogarth easily won the Intermediate
Hammer for Cleveland. The best track performances came in the 400m. Durham's
Craig Glanville, the 2001 English Schools' Junior chmpion, won the
Intermediate event and team mate Lewis Robson, this year's A.A.A
Indoor champion, was successful in the Junior race. James Sinclair of Northumberland
took the Junior 200m (24.2) after earlier winning the 100m.

Additional Comments: All of report used. Nice day apart from wind. Handwritten
results sheets produced problems, especially with names of "non regular"
athletes. Only christian names given on Junior Girls' High Jump. Had to
ring up Andy Ward for Cleveland winner's name. Winner of Intermediate Shot,
is unknown to me but was well above standard. The problem was he was called
CONNIGAN on Shot and CORRIGAN on Discus (since found out Corrigan from
Cumbrian Schools results via. AW). Guest runners were missed off, and not
all Seniors were listed. I used those performances I had, but apologies
for those not listed (and those mis-spelt). McAree won Senior Javelin,
but have no mark, similarly Ian Dodsworth competed in Senior Pole Vault.
David Grieve won Senior 100m (narrowly from Cumbrian runner) in 12.5. Major
surprise was defeat of Willi in 100m, by Lauren Arthur. She did not seem
to like wind. Most spectators thought (+ Margaret Watson, who was overruled
and timekeepers) that Settle pipped Armstrong in Inter 800. Chris Parr,
who made an abortive attempt at pacemaking for Chris Lamb, and consequently
lost interest, has been given automatic entry to English Schools 3000m,
after getting standard at A.A.A Championships (probably helped that he
rang Dorothy B up).

Results courtesy of Vera Robson. 223 runners. Ted Joynson was 223rd in
1:25:00. This is still faster than his normal pace !!!, but I gather there
are no short cuts. Course record is 32:36 by Terry Wall in 1999. Not sure
of Womens' figures. Denise Todd has just finished a degree course, and
is likely to be competing more regularly now. Very warm evening, and it
was a good job most of course, was by river. Heaton had 12 runners (+ Denis
Young who was not listed in results). Second counter was Chris Brown (52nd
in 43:05). Leading lady was Shirley Atkinson (18th in 49:22).

Additional Comments: Only AW standards used. Will submit results only
to Journal for Monday (23rd). As usual a poor turn-out. There were only
four, in Open 800m. Denis's Discus and Javelin throws took him to the top
of the British rankings. He also threw 33.02 (Discus) as guest in "younger"
age-group. Apparently he lost Shot event because his arm was hurting, and
he could not throw properly. John Wild hurt his arm also, and withdrew
from Javelin. Barry Parnaby was making his debut in Over 70 age-group.
Paul Johnsom was making his veterans' debut. Not sure why Eric Smart ran
in M40 event, rather than take on Readman in 400m ? It would have been
a good race. Heaton had three athletes taking part. Reg Checkley (79.2
in M60 400m), Eric Appleby (6:09.8 in M65 1500m) and Tom Radclffe (86.7
and 6:35.9 in M70 400m and 1500m). Reg was second, Eric was first and Tom
was 2nd and 1st (in some cases they were only competitor). Eric thought
he ran better, than when clocking faster, three weeks ago. However, it
was quite windy.

Newton Aycliffe 3M Centenary 10K Road Race.
Sun. 16th June.
Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street lead from start to finish, to win
the fifth Newton Aycliffe 3M Centenary 10K Road Race, yesterday. Bell held
a 23 secs advantage after the first short loop, which had increased to
1min 15secs, with one full lap remaining. The margin of victory was 1min
47secs, over Durham's Rob Hand, who held off the strong challenge of fellow
veteran, Martin Grainger. The strong blustery conditions meant that Martin
Scaife's year-old-record was never in any danger, despite Bell's forceful
running. Darlington's Bernadette Taylor comfortably won the Womens' race,
from clubmate Alison Raw, who was the leading veteran. Sheila Allen of
Houghton and Peterlee, making a welcome return to local competition, took
third place, after leading for the first mile.

Additional Comments: Report edited. 210 finishers, which is a lot less
than in 2001. Thanks to Ian Thomas for results. Poor quality after first
fifty. Bell's run looked faster, and most runners were disappointed with
their times. I gather the wind was strong on one long stretch of course,
but this was unnoticeable around finish area. Heaton had three runners,
Allen Mulliss (85th in 44:39), Shirley Atkinson (18th Lady in 46:19) and
Kelly McEntee (19th Lady in 47:21). Frank Johnson was in his element, telling
a story that Matthew Lomax (winner of Fun Run), was not allowed to compete
in Durham Schools Championships the day before (results to follow at a
later date), because he was not entered by his area (apparently the fax
sent did not show the tick by his name). He will be allowed to compete
as guest in Inter Counties event. Do not know what is Womens' course record
or when it was set ? (Since found out: Sheila Allen 37:05 in 1999, courtesy
of race-results website).

Northumberland Schools Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium. Sat. 15th June.
Despite the blustery conditions, five records were broken and several
National qualifying standards were achieved, at Saturday's Nortumberland
Schools Track and Field Championships, at Gateshead International Stadium.
Peter Middleton of North Tyneside, the National Intermediate sprint Hurdles
champion 2 years ago, set new figures in the Senior 400m Hurdles, bettering
the previous record by 1.8 secs,. Kieran Flannery of Newcastle then broke
the record in the Intermediate 400m Hurdles, by a fifth-of-a-second. In
both cases, it as former North Shields Poly athlete, John Bell, who lost
his record. In the next event Heather Rodgers of North Tyneside took a
fifth-of-a-second off the old mark in the Intermediate 300m Hurdles. Nisha
Desai of East Northumberland won the Senior 400m and 800m, setting new
Championship and personal best figures in both. Desai, 4th in the 2001
National Schools 800m, bettered the records by massive margins of 1.5secs
and 3.1 secs respectively. Daniel Blackett of North Tyneside erased a 25-year-old
record in the Junior Triple Jump, by 18 cms. There were some impressive
sprint doubles during the afternoon. from James Sinclair of North
Northumberland (Junior Boys), Roisin Willi of East Northumberland (Junior
Girls) ,and David Riley of East Northumberland (Senior Boys). Paul Moore
of North Northumberland, Alan Selby of East Northumberland and Chris Campbell
of East Northumberland won the 100m, 200m and 400m respectively, in the
Intermediate age-group, all in National qualifying times.. Dale Hewitson
of North Tyneside won the Senior Shot. Though nowhere near a record, the
most exciting race of the day came in the Junior Girls' 1500m, where Mary
Ferrier of Tynedale, held off the challenge of the North Tyneside pair
of Emma Nesbitt and Chloe Gilmore. Jonathon Graham of Newcastle showed
a welcome return to form, winning the Senior Boys' 1500m, with a fast last
lap.

Additional Comments: Most of report used (up to Dale Hewitson, who was
ignored). Not a great entry especially at start when England (v Denmark
3-0) World Cup match was on. Thanks to Royal Grammar School "computer"
team for results. Some good performances. I expect Gemma Fergusson will
get automic qualification for National event (she finished seventh in Commonwealth
Games Trials in 13.83). Noticeable that there are as many (if not more)
Gateshead Harriers, in Northumberland as in Durham. Not 100% sure about
Nisha's best times. Nice to see a good run from Vicky Carmichael. Titi
Ameobi looked unimpressive. Jonathon Graham clocked about 60 secs for final
lap, and McLeod did not bother chasing him. The worst run of the season
so far, for Paul Hutton. Charlotte Wickham ran with Men, but struggled
on her own. Susan Armstrong dropped out after two laps. For some reason,
Senior Boys and second heat of Inter Boys 200m were combined with Senior
Girls 200m. Selby clocked 22.8 behind Riley. There was one girl competitor,
who clocked 28.2, but no name.
Shane Smith was competing in Gateshead vest !
Incorporated in programme was Durham Schools' Pole Vault. Ian Dodsworth
won Senior Boys' event in 3.80. He cleared same height when finishing third
in Hexham Street Pole Vault, the previous evening, behind Mark Christie
(4.60) and Keith Higham (4.40). Sophie Dewell was first lady (2.70). The
rain stopped apparently ten minutes before event.

Start Fitness North Eastern Athletics League.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Wed. 12th June.
Once again a swirling wind affected performances at the third North
Eastern Athletics League meeting, at Monkton Stadium. New Zealander Mark
Rodgers, searching for a qualifying time for both 400m and 800m in the
Commonwealth Games, comfortably won the 400m. Gateshead's Chris Boundy,
improved his personal best height by 15cm, to win the Pole Vault. Northern
100m silver medallist, James Sinclair of Gateshead, gained a treble victory
in the Under 15 100m, 400m and Javelin. Jarrow's Claire Smallwood, in the
absence of coach Jimmy Hedley, who was admitted three days earlier to the
Freeman Hospital, with a mild heart attack, easily won the Womens' 3000m,
missing her personal best time by one second.

Additional Comments: Did not send to Journal as results appeared in
Chronicle (13th). Report plus initial set of results are what was sent
to AW. Bright and sunny, but cool wind was against sprinters, especially
in early races (though U15 Boys 100m was fast). Best meeting performances
were by Chris Boundy and Rachel Abbs. For some reason Senior and Under
17 Men 100m races, came out as two "mixed" events. Only two Senior/Junior
Women in 100m, three in 3000m and four in 400m. Vicky Wester was refused
a run as guest in latter event. Stuart Conolly had entry refused in Senior
100m (has not paid Morpeth subs for two years). Claire's km splits in 3K
were 3:12 and 6:30. Apparently Jimmy is ok and ready to come out of hospital
(he took ill after Blaydon race). Rodgers (winner over 800m in Bedford
International and second in Scottish 800m), was chasing qualifying time
of 47.3. Heard that Jacqui Elliott has resigned from Elswick. Also heard
that a C O'Connell (1:55+) had won Irish 800m (probably somebody else ?).

Additional Comments: No report as Paul Gilder covered this for Journal.
Weather was wet before event, but drizzle followed by brightness, as race
progressed. In other words ideal conditions. 3371 finishers, a record by
over 300. Most of results courtesy of Joe Lee website (520 available on
day). Kintai led nearly all way, breaking his own record by 16secs. Russian
(25th in race), broke Karen Hind's record by 45secs. Excellent run by Ryan
Mcleod in 16th place. Jeff Laws dropped out, upsetting Sunderland's chance
of winning veterans' team prize. Splitting of Seniors/Veterans in Mens'
category, always throws up strange team result. According to George Patterson,
Andrew Driscoll had good run (he was actually a Morpeth counter). Funneling
was not as good as normal at finish (probably due to larger field). More
traffic on Road between Newcastle and Blaydon via Western By-Pass, due
to timing of race and Metro Centre being open.
Heaton had a surprising 31 competitors. Ian Legge was first counter
(258th in 36:59). There was a R Pilkington (37:40). who I have never heard
of, listed as Heaton's fourth counter. Jo Smith was leading lady (354th
in 38:23 and 42nd woman). Anita Nott was next (39:22) but only 7th W40.
Womens' teams were 9th and 13th. Eric Appleby was second M65 (41:00), just
behind Pauline Leslie. Gerry Shirley was second M70 (44:00) and Tom Radcliffe
was third M70 (45:39). GR was 2258th in 53:08. Ted Joynson clocked 68:30
having many behind him. As usual in this race, he was 2mins per mile, faster
than normal.

Northern of England Mens' Track and Field
League.
Sat. 8th June.
Gateshead Harriers were emphatic winners of the second Northern Mens'
League Division 1 fixture, at the International Stadium, on Saturday. The
Tyneside club, now head the table by half-a-point from Derby and County.
Gateshead took maximum points in the 110m Hurdles, through Northern bronze
medallist Richard Myers and North Eastern champion, Richard Hunter. Ross
Thompson won the Hammer, Ian Burns gained victory in the Javelin and Northern
Under 20 champion, Chris Weitz was successful in the Long Jump. Morpeth
Harriers finished third, improving on their disappointing opening match,
and now lie sixth in the overall placings. Morpeth dominated for most of
the individual track events, but struggled on the Field. Northern 200m
champion, Craig Telford gained a sprint double, and Tom Ranger won the
400m and 800m. Mark Brown was successful in the 1500m and Chris Sampson
and David Swinburne gained maximum points in the Steeplechase. For good
measure Northern Junior 100m champion, David Riley won the B sprints. In
the Division 2 fixture at York, Nestle Rowntrees proved too good for Mandale
and Durham City. For the Cleveland club, Peter Vickers clocked a fast time
in the 100m and Northern Under 17 silver medallist, Dean Daniel won the
200m. Junior international, Stephen Hepples, competing for New Marske (his
main club Loftus are not members of the League), was untroubled in winning
the 1500m.

Additional Comments: Most of Report used. Showery but reasonable conditions
at Gateshead. Hole in lane 8 of track, near Steeplechase barrier, due to
subsidence. Hence in 200m, 400m, 400m Hurdles and
4 x100m Relay, A and B races had to be split. Gateshead won their Relay
"heat" and I think Eric Smart thought they were fastest. He also won his
200m "heat" and was pleased with his time. Morpeth's sprint Relay team
should have won easily, but bad take-overs from Tom Ranger to Alan Selby
and then to David Riley, gave Craig Telford no chance. Bill Anderson was
helping out with Throws. This did not please some people. Chris Betts through
B string Hammer for Gateshead (10 metres +). Malcolm Price could run for
Gateshead, as Salford had withdrawn from League. Andrew Toward, ran with
Price early on, dropped back to be passed by Les Atkinson, and produced
"storming" last lap to take second place in 5000m. Morpeth very poor in
technical events. No better than fifth in any of these. Division 2 results
courtesy of Stuart Pailor. Only information from Division 3 fixture at
Carlisle (from Brian Kirkley), was that Adam Rogers won 100m in 11.1, and
was second in 400m, ahead of Shane Smith. No match result. In Division
4 competition at Chester Le Street, Richmond and Zetland won easily from
Chester Le Street, Morpeth B and Wallsend. Blaydon did not take part. The
"minor" clubs only had about six competitors. Minimum info from Margaret
Watson. Later information: Match Result from Division 3: 1 Border B; 2
Seaton; 3 North Shields Poly; 4 Houghton and Peterlee; 5 Jarrow and Hebburn;
6 South Shields. Rogers clocked 11.2 and 50.1 (behind Tim Thompson 50.0),
and Shane Smith clocked 50.2. Lee Wiscombe won 400m Hurdles (55.4), and
Ian Dodsworth won Pole Vault (3.80). ACTUAL Division 4 result was 1 Richmond
and Zetland; 2 Gosforth; 3 Morpeth B; 4 Wallsend; 5 Birtley; 6 Chester
Le Street. Paul Moore won 100m (11.5), and Paul Hutton won 800m (1:58.7).

Additional Comments: Will send only listed results (AW standard), for
Monday's Journal. Again a poor entry. Though it had faired up when meeting
started, it had been raining non-stop for six hours and Javelin had to
be cancelled for safety reasons (Denis was not pleased !). There was a
frantic effort to brush water from throwing area, for other events (luckily
only Denis's loyal band were competing). Actually conditions were ok with
little wind and quite mild. The mist did encroach later on. Martin Telford
won M40 800m (2:13.7), outkicking Tommy Power (2:14.6). Jeff Laws, in his
veteran debut, dropped out of 3000m, just after 4 laps, when a clear second
behind Les A. Eric Appleby clocked 12:34.6 in 3000m (only M65), but he
was 20secs faster than in Standards Meeting, four weeks ago. Tom Radcliffe
gained "treble" in M70 age-group (only competitor), in 200m (39.5), 800m
(3:17.8) and 3000m (14:05.5). George R did not turn up.

Heaton Harriers Jesmond Dene Handicap.
Mon. 3rd. June.
John Davison of Durham headed the field of 94 runners, to win the second
of the Heaton Harriers Jesmond Dene Handicap Series, last night. Gosforth
Harrier, Terry West and Paul Johnson of Thames Valley shared the fastest
time. Judith Nutt of Elswick, was the fastest lady, for the second successive
month.

(Heat) 23:09
(Newcastle Journal: Tues. 4th June 2002).
Additional Comments: Only report used. Will probably resubmit results
for next Monday, though they did add times of fastest runners to report
! A bright, dry and very mild evening (very stuffy), and it was ok underfoot,
after previous night's rain and "electric" storm. A good turn-out considering
it was also Jubilee Day. An interested spectator was Karen Johns, who was
watching Jo Smith. Karen seemed to be "attached" to one of the Clarksons.
Terry West (73rd) was backmarker (off 12mins), but did not run as well
as I expected. Paul Johnson was off 11:40 (49th). Ted Joynson, was off
- 13mins and still was only in the middlle of the field. Denis Tait was
off - 40secs. The winner, ran much better than last time, but apparently
has lost a stone. Jim Bell was fourth fastest (18:58), followed by Harry
Matthews and Barry Jameson (both 19:24) and Ryan Stephenson (19:31).
Helen Smith was fourth fastest lady in 23:40. Natalie Batey, who was
a "flook" winner of first race, finished 87th this time. Heaton's first
runner was Pauline Leslie (12th) (she was 5th fastest in 25:07). An extra
time was taken, but not sure whether Bernie Cordes, went through
finish line. He was not included in results.

North of England Senior Track and Field Championships.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Sat. 1st June.
The region's athletes had a successful time at Saturday's North of
England Senior Track and Field Championships, at a sunny and warm Monkton
Stadium, Jarrow, taking many medals including six gold. North East runners
gained victories in both the first and last track event, of the five hour
programme. Former Middlesbrough athlete, Richard Smith, now running in
the Newham and Essex Beagles colours, who was second to Jared Deacon, in
the recent North Eastern Championship, won the 400m Hurdles in a personal
best time. Lee Wiscombe of Jarrow and Hebburn, took the silver medal. Craig
Telford of Morpeth, closed the proceedings with a win in the 200m, again
in a personal best time. Telford, the winner of the New Year Powderhall
Sprint, had just returned from a top class handicap event in Australia,
and warmed up for his win, with a fourth placing in the 100m. A fine third
place in the 200m went to Morpeth's Alan Selby, who is the North Eastern
champion, in the Under 17 age-group. Tynedale's Andy Caine, winner of the
Cross Country title in January, was never headed after two laps of the
5000m, gaining an easy victory. Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street, the
North Eastern champion, took third place. Gemma Fergusson of North Shields
Poly recovered from a disappointing run in last weekend's Junior Championships,
to impressively win the 100m Hurdles in a fast time, against a fairly strong
headwind (3m per second). Border Harrier, Sara Todd finished third, only
half an hour after taking the bronze medal in the 400m Hurdles. Shirley
Webb gained a second victory for North Shields Poly in the Hammer, with
a personal best throw. Stacey Mohammed provided host club, Jarrow and Hebburn
with a victory in the Javelin. Karen Johns of Shildon clocked a personal
best time to take the silver medal in the 800m, behind Blackpool's Vicky
Lawrence. Claire Smallwood of the home club, took the silver medal in the
5000m, after earlier finishing fourth in the 1500m in a personal best time.
Cumbria's solo victory came from Border's Stephanie Higham in the High
Jump, adding to her Junior title, won last week. Northern Under 17 Heptathlon
champion, Emma Morris of South Shields was a creditable third. Robert Cole
of Middlesbrough and Steven Horn of Elswick took the minor medals
in the 1500m. Vince Wilson of Belgrave, still attempting to regain his
best form, gained the silver medal in the 800m, behind defending champion,
Rob Watkinson of Rotherham. A brave front running display by Sunderland's
Malcolm Hassan, turned to disappointment, as he faded to fourth in the
finishing straight. Ian Holliday of Sale took the silver medal in the High
jump, Elizabeth Dwan of Gateshead was second in the Shot and Elaine Smith
of Sale, the junior champion, gained silver in the Long Jump. Former champion,
Ian Burns of Gateshead finished third in the Javelin, and other bronze
medals went to Richard Myers of Gateshead (110m Hurdles), Claire Moore
of Gateshead (Discus), Dave Robertson of Jarrow (Long Jump), and for Cumbria
David Little of Border (Hammer).

Additional Comments: Nearly all of report used. Did not mention "poor"
performances of Alison Curbishley (who has supposedly clocked 2:03 already
this season) and Bev Blakeman (6th and 7th in 800m). Submitted any regional
top six placing, if creditable. Sun on top of you on front of stand. Very
"overpowering". Little wind early on, but got stronger later and was swirling.
A well organised event (Malcolm Rogers was pleased), but entry could have
been better. Claire Brason fell over at penultimate barrier, in 400m Hurdles
heat, but ran creditably in 400m flat later. I think she may have got silver
in Hurdles. Pleased for Gemma, who was "upset" after losing Junior title.
Heard that Jared Deacon clocked 46.13 secs, to finish second in Latvia,
and was slightly faster finishing second in Estonia (45.95). He was expected
to compete here. Vince had every chance, with 150m to go, but lacks finish
pace at present. Must be pointed out that Michael Rimmer, was quicker in
taking Under 17 title. Karen Johns had also clocked a personal best of
2:08. earlier in the week (not sure where ?). Poor turn-out in 1500m races
(straight finals - too many BMC events ?). Claire Smallwood would have
had chance of gold in 5000m, if she had not ran 1500m. She looked tired
after two laps. John Moore, on current form, would not have qualified for
800m Final, but may have been fifth in 1500m.
