May 2002:

North Shields Poly WOW 10K Road Race.
Whitley Bay.  Wed. 29th May.
Martin Scaife of Chester Le Street won last night's fourth North Shields Poly WOW 10K at Whitley Bay. Scaife took an early lead on the two lap course, passing the halfway point in 15:28. Scaife crossed the finish line at Monkseaton High School, over a minute clear of 2001 winner, David Robertson of Sunderland, now a veteran, with Terry West of Gosforth taking third place. Scaife's time bettered the previous course record set by Robertson in the inaugural 1999 event, by 40 secs. Catherine Brennan of Chester Le Street easily won the Womens' race, ahead of Elswick's Andrea Banner, with the host club's Amanda Dickinson, the leading veteran in third place.
Result.
1 M Scaife (CleS) 31:08 (Course Record); 2 D Robertson (Sun, M40) 32:32; 3 T West (Gosf) 33:06; 4 J Moore (Heat) 33:17; 5 P Johnson (Thames VH) 33:23; 6 M McDonald (Low F) 33:30; 7 C Henderson (Morp) 34:09; 8 I Twaddle (NSP) 34:15; 9 R Rush (Sun, M40) 34:23; 10 A Dent (Blay, M45) 34:29; 11 P Walker (Blay) 34:37; 12 A Brown (Blyth) 34:46; 13 A Jenkins (Morp, M50) 34:53; 14 Jim Bell (Els, M50) 34:55; 15 C Dentice (Morp, M50) 35:20  M55 - 1 M McNally (Els) 35:34; 2 M Walker (Gosf) 37:08  M60 - 1 C Bolton (Els) 38:45; 2 T O'Gara (Walls) 40:31  M70 - H Craven (Heat) 55:51
Women: 1 C Brennan (CleS) 37:44; 2 A Banner (Els) 40:10; 3 A Dickinson (NSP, W35) 42:02; 4 T Munnelly (unatt) 42:30; 5 Y Swinhoe (Els, W45) 42:38; 6 A Nott (Heat, W40) 43:10; 7 L Walker (Walls) 43:35; 8 S O'Donnell (Gosf) 43:49; 9 J Cross (Clare, W35) 44:13; 10 C Young (Blyth, W45) 44:22  W45 - 3 C Smith (unatt) 44:53   W50 - P Woodcock (Morp) 46:42  W55 - P Gold (Heat) 49:37  W60 - E Armstrong (Tyne) 52:57

(Newcastle Journal: Thurs. 30th May 2002).

Additional Comments: Only report used. Will resubmit results for next Monday (3rd June). 190 finishers, though this is not 100% certain, as times and positions did not marry up, at tail end of field. Like the Strollers race, the lack of experience of results people, saw them ignore check numbers with times. Nevertheless thanks to them, for full results. Weather bright but breezy. Scaife had 39 secs lead at halfway over Robertson and Matt Tomlinson (who dropped out later). Robertson's record in this race is 1st/2nd/1st/2nd. I am only estimating previous course record, as I have lost 1999 results. I think Sheila Allen holds Womens' record, from then, also. Brennan's halfway time was 18:32. David Tait turned up late, missing start by 8 minutes approx. He finished last in 63mins +. Ted Joynson was reason for this lateness, but luckily Ted did not run. Heaton had 18 runners. Second counter was Sean Kelly (34th in 37:28). Anita (good to see her back), finished 97th. Malcolm Gibson, running again in Heaton colours, clocked 45:42 (122nd). George Routledge finished 183rd (57:14).

Sunderland Pier to Pier Run.
Sun. 26th May.
World Championship 5000m representative, Michael Openshaw was a runway winner of yesterday's Sunderland Strollers Pier to Pier Run, from South Shields to Roker. Despite running into the wind for most of the distance, the former Chester Le Street athlete (30), now running for Birchfield, soon headed the 500 strong field, pulling away to a 500m victory over Jarrow's Mark Slesser (19). Peter Gibson of Sunderland took third pace, ahead of the leading veteran, Steve Clark of North Shields Poly. Bingley's Meryl Dodd won the Womens' race, finishing in 15th position overall. Over 2 minurtes behnd in second place, was Elswick's Judith Nutt, with Dawn Richardson of Quakers finishing third. Result. Distance 7.5M.
1 M Openshaw (Birch) 38:59; 2 M Slesser (J&H) 40:36; 3 P Gibson (Sun) 42:08; 4 S Clark (NSP, M40) 42:23; 5 W Knox (unatt) 42:28; 6 C McDonald (SSh) 43:15; 7 R Wills (Sun, M40) 43:21;' 8 P Morgan  (SSh, M40) 43:25; 9 M Jones (SSh) 43:30; 10 K Maynard (Sun S, M40) 43:41; 11 V Tindle (Sun, M50) 43:44; 12 P Carter (Crook, M45) 43:46; 13 M McNally (Els, M55) 43:57; 14 A Brown (Blyth) 44:38; 15 W Bramley (Quak, M40) 44:47  Further Veterans: M50 - 2 J Dennis (Crook) 44:59; 3 J Maddison (Sun) 45:45  M60 - 1 R Wilson (Sun) 46:06; 2 D Sinclair (Aur) 48:38  M65 - E Appleby (Heat) 54:00  M70 - W McNeil (Dur) 55:00
Women: 1 M Dodd (Bingley) 44:47; 2 J Nutt (Els) 46:50; 3 D Richardson (Quak) 49:03; 4 M Ford (SSh) 49:44; 5 K Crowther (unatt) 50:08; 6 M Holt (Sun) 50:45; 7 J Friend (unatt, W40) 52:22; 8 R Layton (Elv, W50) 53:02; 9 S Calvert (Morp, W35) 53:21; 10 V Williams (unatt, W35) 53:24
(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 27th May 2002).

Additional Comments: All info used. 500 finishers. Gary Campbell was Heaton's first counter (123rd in 51:48). Eric was third counter (168th). Kelly McEntee was leading lady (13th in 55:02). Bright at start, but rain started when tailenders were finishing. An enjoyable event but lacked overall class. Eric (nearly 70), was just outside first third of field. Course must change each year, as Openshaw was over a minute slower than Tim Field's winning time in 2001. All times and positions, are unofficial as there were problems with results. There were plenty of check numbers with times, but I think the person compiling these results is not one to get the wrong side of. George R, who pulled a muscle at halfway, was given no time, but I think it was
79:48.

Additional Comments: Results courtesy of NEAA website. Will send to next Monday's Journal (3rd June). Apparently there was a heavy "attack" of thunder and lightning along with torrential rain, which cut electricity off for an hour. I assume computerised results after that were unavailable, which is why they were not on website until Monday pm ? There were surprisingly good entries in Junior Womens' 100m and 400m, considering there were only four in 200m. MAJOR shock, was Gemma Fergusson's defeat in Hurdles by Ennis, a top multi-eventer. Congratulations to Chris Weitz and Charlotte Wickham on their wins. Elaine Smith retained her title. An excellent silver from Roisin Willi, this year's best "newcomer". Adam Carmichael, is an unknown talent, though his sister Victoria has been a consisent performer (she was 8th in Junior 400m). Good run from Kirk Wilson.
Drew Graham was third in Junior 800m heat, but did not qualify for final, and first four in another heat, went through on times. Jonathon Graham was fourth in final (has he changed his distance this year ?). Chris Glanville was third in heat of Under 17 400m, but did not run in final. Nisha Desai was sixth in Junior 1500m (thought 400m and 800m were her strongest events ?). Titi Ameobi was fourth in Junior 100m, but could have won 200m. Flooding on warm-up track, meant Junior Steeplechase was cancelled.

North of England Junior Track and Field Championships.
City of Manchester Stadium.  Sat. 25th May.
North East athletes won the first two races ever to be staged at the new City of Manchester Stadium, at Saturday's North of England Junior Track and Field Championships. At the venue to be used for this year's Commonwealth Games, Gateshead's Kieran Flannery won the opening event, the Under 17 400m Hurdles, in a personal best time. 10 minutes later, Claire Brason of North Shields Poly took the Junior Womens' 400m Hurdles for the third successive year. Claire also comfortably gained revenge on Wigan's Gemma Dooney, who narrowly defeated her in last year's A.A.A and English Schools' Championship. Morpeth's David Riley narrowly won the Junior Mens' 100m, with Middlesbrough's Peter Vickers only three-hundredths of a second behind in third place. Lewis Robson of Gateshead, who won several area titles in the winter season, won his first two outdoor gold medals, taking the 80m Hurdles and Shot, in the Under 15 age-group. Graham Jackson, also of Gateshead, won the Under 17 Triple Jump. Blaydon's Lianne Tucker took the Under 17 Shot title and later gained the bronze medal in the Shot. A strong North East challenge in the Junior Mens' 1500m was witheld by Bolton's Tom Lancashire. Chris Parr of Gateshead and Ryan McLeod of Elswick took the minor medals, in personal best times. Again setting new figures were fourth-placed Richard Kemp of Sunderland (also in heat) and Chris Lamb of Chester Le Street (5th). Matthew Armstrong of Blaydon took third place in the Under 17 Mens' 800m in another personal best, behind runaway winner, Michael Rimmer of Liverpool Pembroke. Morpeth's Andrew Toward took the silver medal in the Junior Mens' 5000m. Gateshead's James Sinclair took the silver in the Under 15 100m and bronze in the 200m. Identical performances were obtained by clubmate Daniel Blackett in the Under 15 Triple and Long Jump. Elswick's Sam Crowe was third in the Under 17 Womens' 3000m. Though there was a strong wind blowing outside, most of the athletics arena was covered, showing a minimum effect on performances. One event that did suffer was the Pole Vault, but this did not deter Border's Keith Higham to clear a personal best height, narrowly defeating former Gateshead Harrier, Mark Christie. Higham's sister, Stephanie had earlier retained her Junior High jump title. Cumbria's other victory came from Carlisle-based Stretford athlete, Adrian Holliday  who won the Under 17 Steeplechase, which had to take place on the Warm-up track, due to a problem with the water jump. Cleveland athletes gained several minor medals. Leslie Richards was second in the Junior Mens' Discus, Dean Daniel (Under 17 Men 200m), and Thomas Grant (Under 15 400m) also gained silvers.

Additional Comments: All info used, though "Cumbrian" report was repeated for some reason. Also Lianne T won Discus not Shot (my error). No chance of getting Day 2 results on time, so will forward for next Monday. The new complex, although very grand, was far too large for this meeting, though it was "essential" they had a dress rehearsal. Security was also a bit ott. Main Stand was not finished, so timekeepers were on side of Track. As main stand was above ground level, access from trackside was difficult. You had to go out of one entrance, and into another up spiral staircase. No chance of getting results during meeting, apart what was heard and what was handed to timekeepers. Had to rely on website later that night (however Day 2 results were not on site at 3.00pm Monday, probably due to a power failure during meeting:  nb.they were displayed sometime during evening). Did not know of Robson's Shot victory until seeing site. Most noteable performances mentioned in report, but McLeod struggled with early pace in 1500m, and had to fight hard for third. Paul Hutton looked out of sorts, finishing seventh (4:02.56). Rachel Nathan was impressive winner of Under 17 1500m (4:33.17) (nb. only results involving North East athletes used). Since learned that Toward ran pb in 5000m.

Additional comments: Not sent due to late finish of meeting + Bill McGuirk getting results in Chronicle, the day after. The first set of results are those sent to AW. Not a great turn-out. Probably due to clashes with Schools meetings, and the very windy conditions (against runners in finishing straight). Very few inside AW standard, though Long/Triple Jump would have been wind-assisted. The two Under 13 sprints were the only events, with more than one (in this case two) heat. John Moore ran quite well, but no match for Hutton on last lap. Eric Smart tried to get 200m to be ran in opposite direction, but no chance.
Emma Morris and Simon Egdell were best performers.

Additional Comments: Not used. Only sent in because of BMC 1500m, which I did not know was on till the same evening. Obviously space not booked, so was not confident of this info being used. Will resubmit results for next Monday. Wind affected times. Gareth Thraves was pacemaker in BMC event going through in 60.6 (400m) and 2:06.2 (800m). Bell time was 2:54.7. Chris O'Connell dropped out just after bell, when looking likely winner (his father was complaining about something before this). Mark Brown was overjoyed with his pb. There were 13 runners with first nine inside AW standard. Thraves also led in Womens' race (3 runners) but pace not quick. Emily Grant (running for Hillingdon not J&H, was third in 5:03.2). Open 800m at start of meeting was won by Stephen Horn in 2:03.6 (nb. only AW standard results used). In Veterans' 1500m, Eric Appleby clocked 6:03.4 (probably first M65) and Reg Checkley clocked 6:20.0. George Routledge was working late-shift. Invitation Hammer was non-scoring event for Denis and pals. Invitation Discus was Denis's second competition, in "younger" age-group. Not a great turn-out. There was supposed to be a Long Jump, but saw no competitors or results. Noticed that Alan Dent and Archie Jenkins, have moved up an age-group. Since found out in AW, that Archie, running for Cambuslang (4th), was fastest M50 at National Road Relay.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 20th May 2002).

Additional Comments: All info used (though they listed Selby's second win as 400m in report !). Of course McDonalds are no longer sponsors, sorry ! Consequently there are no Man of Match awards. Dry but cool and quite windy. No outstanding Field event results, but apologies as I did not see all. Armstrong pulled away from Matthew Lomax in last lap of 1500m. George Patterson delighted with Gareth Driscoll's victory (he led all way and was too strong for his nearest challenger in final 100m). Poor turn-out in Hurdles, and fields in Match 2 were a lot smaller than Match 1.

North of England Combined Events Championships.
Tynedale Athletics Park, Hexham.  Sat. 18th / Sun 19th May.
Emma Morris of South Shields was the region's only North of England title winner at this weekend's Combined Events Championships, at Tynedale Athletics Park, Hexham. The former English Schools' Junior High Jump silver medallist, had a healthy advantage in the Under 17 Heptathlon at the halfway stage after impressive victories in the Hurdles, High Jump and 200m. However Kaatia Lannon of Manchester soon made up the deficit on Day 2, and it was only in the final event, the 800m that Morris gained the necessary points for a narrow 12 point victory.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 20th May 2002).

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Sunday's results courtesy of Frank Johnson, hence Saturday's are more detailed. Only North East title at stake in Senior events. Not enough officials. Photo finish did not operate on Saturday's afternoon session. Weather wet most of first day but little wind. Second day I presumes was drier but more windy. Poor standard in Under 15 Boys' event. Lewis Robson (+ others) did not compete, as it is Durham Schools' event on Friday (25th). Emma Morris started well in Hurdles (12.39) and High Jump (1.63), but must have had a bad Shot, as she was only in second string 200m (26.8). Craig Glanville was easily fastest 400m runner (52.7). Apparently there was an "incident" with Leeds coach and High Jump officials on second day. Due to lack of Senior athletes, meeting ran to time for a change.

Gateshead 10K Road Race.
Team Valley. Sun. 19th May.
Veterans dominated yesterday's Low Fell Running Club Gateshead 10K Road Race. Durham's Rob Hand was joined by fellow veterans Dave Robertson of Sunderland and Ieuan Ellis of Elswick along with near veteran Malcolm Price of Salford in the early stages, with Ellis losing contact on the second of the three laps. The trio were still locked together with 400m remaining, with Hand proving the strongest at the finish. The winner is the curent British Veterans Cross Country champion, and gained some revenge on runner-up Robertson, who was ahead of Hand when taking the first veterans' priize in the London Marathon. Caroline Bowman of Chester le Street comfortably won the Womens' race from the Elswick pair of Andrea Banner and Susanne Morton.
Result.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 20th May 2002).

Additional Comments: Most of report used. Since found out that Robertson ran in National Veterans' Road Relay the day before (Sunderland were 7th M40 and 11th M50). 106 finishers. Weather warm but breeze getting up. Winning time 2 secs outside "Our Tim's" 2001 record (equalled Veterans' mark). Caroline Bowman set new veterans' figures. Heaton had 4 runners, Howard Gold (42:43), Allen Mulliss (45:01) and George Routledge (57:48) and John Josephs dropped out after 2 laps. Ted Joynson was nearly lapped by GR. His time was not taken officially, but would have been 90 minutes approx.

Wallsend Harriers Gordon Smith Memorial Road Relay.
Raby Basin.  Wed. 15th May.
3 x 2.3M (Senior/Veteran/Senior).
North Shields Poly retained their title at last night's Wallsend Harriers Gordon Smith Memorial Road Relay at Raby Basin. John Moore led for a composite team on Leg 1 ahead of North Shields Poly's Tony Wallett, but Tony Mellor gained the advantage for the North Tyneside club on leg 2. Iain Twaddle retained the lead on the last leg, coming home 51 secs ahead of their  B team, with Blaydon taking third place. Veteran Rob Hand, competing for Durham, clocked the fastest time of the evening, moving his club from 9th to 4th on Leg 2. Elswick easily won the Womens' race, anchored by Vicky Russell, who clocked the fastest time. Gateshead through Michelle Hood led on Leg 1, before Kim Davison turned the deficit into an advantage of over 2 minutes for Elswick on Leg 2.
Result.
1 North Shields Poly 36:02 (T Wallett 11:51, T Mellor 12:15, I Twaddle 11:56); 2 North Shields Poly B 36:53 (G Moore 12:29, S Clark 12:34, B Simpson 11:50); 3 Blaydon 37:01 (P Walker 12:08, A Dent 12:19, R Jacobson 12:34); 4 North Shields Poly C 38:11; 5 Composite Team 38:24; 6 Wallsend 38:27  Fastest times: 1 J Moore (Comp/Heat) 11:42; 2 B Simpson 11:50; 3 T Wallett 11:51  Veterans: 1 R Hand (Dur) 11:33; 2 T Mellor 12:15; 3 A Dent 12:19

(Newcastle Journal: Thurs. 16th May 2002).

Additional Comments: Most of report + results used. Surprisingly not in Chronicle the next night. Record entry of 20 teams. Very disappointed only one runner from Heaton, John Moore. George R was working and Allen M is ill. No comment re non-appearance of any Heaton women. Other members of composite team were Phil Lancaster (14:37) in 7th and near-veteran Paul Johnson (12:05). Weather bright and cool, little wind. North Shields Poly 9 secs quicker than last year (same team with first and third runner swapping). For good measure the Poly's D team was ninth. John Moore was fastest in 2001 in 11:27. This was first time since event started, that there were no Morpeth teams. Ian Wallace turned up giving his usual critical opinion. Where do I remember Michelle Hood's face from ?

North Eastern Counties A.A Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium.  Sun. 12th May.
Olympic 400m Relay representative Jared Deacon made it a hat trick of victories, when retaining the 200m and 400m Hurdles titles, at the second day of the North Eastern Counties' Track and Field Championships. In the opening event on the programme,  Deacon, a relative novice over the barriers,  easily defeated top Hurdlers Liam Collins of Sale and former Middlesbrough athlete, Richard Smith, missing the championship record held by British International, Anthony Borsumato, by a mere five-hundredths of a second.  On Saturday, the Border Harrier, broke the championship record in his speciality event, by half-a-second.
Another Border Harrier, Sara Todd made it four titles when winning the 100m and 400m Hurdles adding to her 200m and 100m Hurdles victories on Saturday.
A good quality Womens' Triple Jump, saw victory go to Morpeth's Julia Straker. Gateshead's Ian Burns retained his Senior Mens' Javelin title, and 1500m specialist Nick McCormick of Tynedale (third in last weekend's British Universities Championship), stepped down in distance to narrowly win an exciting 800m from 2001 1500m champion, Tom Ranger of Morpeth. Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street dropped his main rivals in the final 5 laps, to win the 5000m. Chris Walsh of Shaftesbury and  Ian Holliday of Sale retained their Hammer and High jump titles respectively. Gateshead's Lewis Robson was another to win four titles, taking the Under 15 800m and Long Jump, after winning the 400m (in record time) and the sprint Hurdles a day earlier. Matthew Armstrong of Blaydon, maintained his season's unbeaten record in the region, by impressively winning the Under 17 Mens' 800m, in a personal best time. Gateshead's Chris Parr bounced back from a disappointing run in the 1500m to win the Junior Mens' 800m. Paul Hutton of Gosforth, a close second in the 1500m, gained some consolation, when proving too fast for his rivals on the last lap of an exciting Junior 3000m.
Other sprinters to gain the double were David Riley of Morpeth (Junior Men), Alan Selby of Morpeth (Under 17), James Sinclair of Gateshead (Under 15), and Richard Kilty of Middlesbrough (Under 13), the 200m in record time. Titi Ameobi of Gateshead broke the championship best in the Junior Womens' 100m and 200m, and Julia Kennleyside of Elswick won the Under 13 100m and 200m, the latter in record time. Roisin Willi of Gateshead easily won the Under 15 100m and 200m, while clubmate Victoria Wester took the 200m and 300m titles in the Under 17 age-group. Nisha Desai of Morpeth won the Junior 400m after earlier setting new figures in the 800m. Emma Foster of Gateshead set new figures in the Junior Womens' Hammer. Reigning  English Schools' Intermediate champion, Leslie Richards of Middlesbrough and Cleveland, won the Junior Mens' Discus and later took the Hammer title.
Emma Morris of South Shields successfully defended her titles in the Under 17 300m Hurdles and High Jump, after winning the sprint Hurdles on Saturday. Gateshead's Charlotte Wickham set new figures in the Junior womens' 1500m. Gateshead's Elizabeth Dwan took the Senior Womens' Shot title adding to her earlier Discus victory. Clubmate Kerry Elliott gained a similar double in the Junior age-group. The same double was achieved by Blaydon's Lianne Tucker at Under 17 level. Gateshead's Mark Laws was successful in the Under 17 Javelin, after winning the Pole Vault on Saturday. A.A.A Indoor champion, Graham Jackson won the Under 17 Triple Jump. Mary Ferrier, an established Cross Country runner, made a major track breakthrough when winning the Under 15 800m and 1500m. Khalil Thompson of Shildon, winner of his category in the London Mini Marathon, gained a double victory in the Under 13 Boys' 800m and 1500m. Stephanie Hopkinson of Birtley won the Under 13 Girls' Shot and Long Jump.
On Saturday, New British Long Jump record holder, Chris Tomlinson, competing in the colours of Newham and Essex Beagles, easily won the 100m in 10.80 secs, with the wind reading of 0.7 secs, well within the limit. In the Senior women's Long Jump, Edinburgh's Ruth Irving, though not bettering her own record, still gained a Scottish Commonwealth Games qualifying standard. Gateshead's Melissa Stamp set new figures in the Senior Womens' Pole Vault. Championship bests were set in the Senior Womens' Javelin by Jarrow's Stacey Mohammed and in the Junior Womens' event by Rebecca Chatt . Claire Moore of Gateshead easily broke the old record, to win the Senior Womens' Discus. Tynedale's Andy Caine won a highly competitive Senior Mens' 1500m. Paul Reed of Border gained his usual double in the Senior Mens' Shot and Discus  Ryan McLeod of Elswick won an exciting Junior Mens' 1500m in a personal best time, while clubmate Sam Crowe, making her track debut over the distance, won the Under 17 Womens' 3000m. The Senior Womens' 5000m proved to be a good race, with 2000 winner, Morag McDonnell of Chester Le Street pulling away from Jarrow's Claire Smallwood (later to win the 1500m) in the last 4 laps.

Additional Comments: Most of Day 2 report used but Day 1 round-up omitted. Weather dry, sunny but cold wind (not strong) blowing against sprinters. Not so many heats, balanced out by a lot of longer races. Field event programme went quicker as it contained probably the less popular events. Felt 3000m etc, could have possibly been held before 800m finals, as there did not seem a very long gap between heats. John Moore was eliminated in 2:01.3. Sadly there were no competitors in the Mens' 3000m St and Womens' 400m. Only one competitor in Senior Womens' 1500m (Claire ran with Juniors) and 2000m St (this event was officially cancelled, due to insufficient entries, but Sarah Jackson had travelled from Leicester, without being advised of this). Vince Wilson dropped out of 800m, when he knew he would not win with 150m to go.
Pleased that Vicky Carmichael had good run in 400m (I thought she would have struggled after 300m, but finished quite strongly). Catherine Turner was slightly disappointing in Under 15 100m. She did look very sharp, as did her old rival Carly Jones in Under 17 event. Pleased that Allen Mulliss (who was entered) did not run 5000m (he would have been last by at least 2 laps). Meeting finished about 4.30 (Field about 3.45). DM again in attendance.

Additional Comments: See Day 2 for Report adjusted to fit in with second day's action. Have included all winners + other medallists within AW standard. Weather dry, sunny but chill in air. Breezy with wind changing direction several times, but did not really affect performances. Long programme with many heats, including for first time in many years, two in the Senior Mens' 1500m. John Moore was eliminated in 4:10.1. Noticed on several occasions, that some impressive heat performers disappointed in finals, and a few "fastest loser" qualifiers gained medals. Suggests that several supposed top athletes, are not used to racing on regular basis. Sadly there were straight finals in the Mens' 100m and 400m (probably helping Deacon to the record). Deacon' time was fastest by a Briton in 2002 for an hour, until Chris Rawlinson clocked two-tenths quicker in Athens (info from DM). Peter Reed has now won 50 NE titles (info courtesy of Bill McGuirk). Not surprisingly there were poor entries at Junior and Senior Womens' level, all races being straight finals. Angela was third in 800m (2:37+). Please note regarding records, that this was only the second year of seperate Junior Womens' races and Under 13 200m and 1500m events. Gemma Fergusson's non-appearance, was due to her competing in a UK Athletics development race at Bath (no further comment). McLeod snatched victory on line, with Hutton probably kicking too early. Chris Parr only 4th. Good run from Sam Crowe, who broke away after 200m, and no one attempted to go with her. Kirk Wilson was impressive in Under 17 1500m, having his best run for some time. Honoured by attendance of Dave Martin, covering event for National/International media. Meeting closed at about 4.45 (Long Jump), about 15 mins after last track event.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 13th May 2002).

Additional Comments: Sent in AW standard results for Monday. However Denis's M70 performances were omitted. A poor turn-out, on cold night. More entries for Track than Field, but more Field events (all throws included courtesy of Denis). Track finished at 8.00, but Javelin overran (8.40). Shot followed, but was unofficial as judges went home. Eric Appleby clocked 12:54.9 in M65 3000m (only competitor) but was well outside standard. Tom Radcliffe clocked 3:11.8 and 13:57.1 in M70 800m and 3000m, but again was only competitor, though he was still ahead of Chris Foote-Wood in latter. Late News: Denis's performances along with M60 results were omitted from AW.

Heaton Harriers Jesmond Dene Handicap.
Mon. 6th. May.
John Moore of the host club, clocked the fastest time, at last night's first race in the Heaton Harriers Jesmond Dene Handicap Series. Judith Nutt of Elswick, winner of the recent Blyth 10M, was the fastest lady. A record entry of 106 runners took part, with Blaydon Ladies led home by Natalie Batey, occupying the first three places.
Result: Distance 5.5K.
1 N Batey (Blay, L) 22:32; 2 L Brown (Blay, L) 23:35; 3 C Courtney (Blay, L) 24:28; 4 N Riddell (Unatt) 25:37; 5 J Stobbs (Gate) 27:37; 6 M Munro (unatt) 27:43; 7 A Pulman (unatt) 27:49; 8 H Lambert (unatt,,L) 27:52; 9 C Aynsley (Morp) 28:01; 10 T Ward (Morp) 28:15
Fastest Times: 1 J Moore (Heat) 18:00; 2 T Wallett (NSP) 18:07; 3 B Harrison (Morp) 18:10  M40 - John Bell (Els) 18:34  M55 - H Matthews (Els) 19:12
Women: 1 J Nutt (Els) 21:09; 2 A Fox (Morp, U17) 21:56; 3 K Davison (Els, W40) 22:10  W60 - C Lee (Gosf) 25:12
(Newcastle Journal: Tues. 7th May 2002).

Additional Comments: All information used. Race started on time (unusual for first in Series). First three runners were all off -3 minutes, which was very generous indeed. Ted Joynson (off -10 minutes), actually came home in front of two competitors, Sid Robson and a very unfit John Davidson of Durham. Quite cool, overcast and  misty later on. Slightly adjusted course, due to "risk assessment", probably a little bit shorter. Slightly slippery underfoot in parts. Honoured by the presence of George Patterson, as Morpeth clubhouse was closed, due to Bank Holiday. Information on Morpeth website the same night. John Moore was backmarker off 11mins 30secs (finished 48th). Ben Harrison was off 11mins 10secs. Paul Johnson (off 11:20) was fourth fastest in 18:14. Bernie Cordes was fastest M65 in 22:44. Judith Nutt finished 70th. Please Note: 110 took part in 2001, which still is record field.

Coxhoe 10K Multi-Terrain Race.
Sun. 5th May.
Sunderland Harrier Steve Potts, led all the way to easily win yesterday's 11th Tarmac Northern Coxhoe Multi-Terrain race. Elswick's Susanne Morton won the Womens' race, by an even wider margin.
1 S Potts (Sun) 36:09; 2 P Dunn (Elv) 38:28; 3 M Hunter (unatt) 38:51; 4 G Harden (Sun, M40) 39:50; 5 K Allen (Crook) 39:55; 6 J McDermott (H&P, M40) 40:36  M70 - W McNeil (Dur) 48:53
Women: 1 S Morton (Els) 45:58; 2 L Ansbro (unatt) 48:33; 3 A Rundle (unatt) 54:03
(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 6th May 2002).

Additional Comments: All information used, which is more than event deserved. Very poor quality field. 69 ran. Seemed more marshalls etc than runners. Weather dry sunny but quite cool. Distance probably about 600m longer than stated. Very badly advertised outside of Central Durham, which is where most of the field came from ? Never saw entry form till day. In the past there have always been plenty of forms available. If I was not asked to be an official (by former top Pole Vaulter Gary Jackson), I would not have known event was on. Even Running Imp pa was in attendance. Denis Lawther (54mins approx), was one of very few "North of Tyne" runners.

North of England Mens' Track and Field League.
Sat. 4th May.
Gateshead and Morpeth finished fourth and seventh repectively, in the opening Northern Mens' League Division 1 fixture at Cleckheaton. In the Division 2 match at Clairville Stadium, local clubs had to give way to the overall strength of York club Nestle Rowntrees. Durham's Rob Hand recovering from his excursions in the London Marathon, narrowly defeated Alan Stimpson of New Marske in an exciting 5000m. Leslie Richards of Middlesbrough and Cleveland, the current English Schools' Intermediate champion, duly won the Discus.
In the Division 3 fixture at Jarrow, Border B were again too strong for the North East opposition. Adam Rogers of the host club, gained an impressive sprint double, while Lee Wiscombe narrowly defeated Peter Middleton of North Shields Poly in a good quality 400m Hurdles. The Division 4 match saw some good performances from teenage athletes. Paul Moore of Morpeth took advantage of a slight following wind, to clock a fast time in the 100m, while Paul Hutton of Gosforth won a highly competitive 1500m.

Additional Comments: Most of information used. Computer broke down in Division 1 match, rearranged for Cleckheaton from South Leeds Stadium. Score from Chris Betts. Not a great start by Morpeth after their British League campaign (is Ben Harrison a first team performer ?). Division 2 details courtesy of Stuart Pailor. John Moore, competing for Jarrow and Hebburn, was second in 800m (2:01.0), won 1500m (4:15.5 - too slow for Journal), and was third on first leg of 4 x 400m Relay (54.8), the team finishing second. Chester Le Street could not raise a team for Division 4 match. Paul Merrison was well ahead of Gareth Melvin (combined race) and Drew Graham won 400m (52.1).
Division 1 update (Courtesy of AW). Ross Thompson (51.18 in Hammer) and Ian Burns (61.88 in Javelin), were Gateshead's winners. David Riley (11.2 and 22.5) gained a sprint double, Alan Selby won B 200m (22.6) and Andrew Toward won 5000m (15:19.1) for Morpeth.
