* Due to technical difficulties, no field event results were available.

(Newcastle Journal:  Mon. 31st July 2006).

Additional Comments: All available info used. For some reason no field event results, were displayed or made available to announcer. They eventually appeared on NoEAA website at about 9.00pm (too late for Journal). I think Sally Scott cleared a persional best height in the Pole Vault. Probably too long a meeting. Not sure of Relays at end. In U17 Womens' Relay, Pearson (100m), Davidson (100m) and Wilmshurst (200m) bulit up a good lead, but Helen Gertig (600m) dropped to 5th. Tomlinson was due to run 100m but withdrew. Too many leading athletes not competing, but Jenny Tinkler managed to get together a strong Senior Womens' team.

Additional Comments:  Only results sent. Special praise to Laura Weightman, who will now top regional U17 rankings over 3000m. Weather warm and bright, little wind. Turn-out not great, but seemed to be a few more youngsters in track events.
Best performance awards likely to go to Weightman and Murray. One or two "dubious" decisions in sprints, where J&H athletes came out worst.

Denis Field of Sunderland, in his first year in the Over 75 category, set new figures in the Hammer and Javelin, and also took the Shot and Discus titles. It was a good day for the Field family as son Tim, comfortably won the Over 40 1500m and 5000m. Steve Todner of Houghton and Peterlee, gained a treble victory in the Over 50 100m, 200m and 400m.

Not a great turn-out, though some competitors would be at European Veterans Championships, in Poland. good 400m from Todner.  Eric A was ahead of Joe Prudham and Christine Lee, for first 3 laps. Heaton had a successful day, but performances were not up to results standards apart from perhaps, George's Javelin throw.

27th Northumberland Coastal Run.
Beadnell to Alnmouth.  Sun. 9th July.
North East-based Birchfield Harrier, Michael Openshaw, overcame the strong challenge of Alnwick's Dave Kirkland to win yesterday's 27th Northumberland Coastal Run, from Beadnell to Alnmouth. Openshaw's margin of victory was 10secs, with Durham veteran, Ian Crampton taking third place. The combination of a strong headwind and loose sand, meant times were a lot slower, than in previous years. Wirral's Helen Lawrence repeated her 2005 victory in the Womens' race. The former North of England Cross Country champion, finished 14th overall. Bingley's Bev Whitfield finished a distance second with previous winner, Judith Nutt of Elswick in third.

Sainsbury's English Schools Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium.  Day 2.  Sat. 8th July.
North East athletes were again among the medals, on the final day of the Sainsbury's English Schools Track and Field Championships, at Gateshead International Stadium. Cleveland took the only gold, when Richard Kilty from Northfield School, Stockton, gained a convincing win in the Intermediate Boys' 100m. Kilty, third in 2005, came home a metre ahead of team-mate Yusuf Aliu, though the adverse wind in the final, meant a fast time was out of the question. Cleveland also gained a bronze medal in the Senior 400m Hurdles, with a strong finish from Scott Henderson.
Durham were by far the region's most successful county, gaining three on the day, and a total of seven medals.
Kate Avery narrowly lost the Junior Girls' 1500m in a sprint finish to her great rival, Katie Holt of Staffordshire. Melissa Carr took second place in the Senior Triple Jump, while Sean Hall finished a gallant third in the Senior Boys' Steeplechase.
Stacey Smith of Northumberland, smashed her personal best time to take second place in the Intermediate Girls' 800m.
She, along with Kilty and Aliu, make up a total of seven North East athletes, who travel to Grangemouth this Saturday, to represent England in the International match against Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
Outstanding performers on view included Gloucestershire's Emily Pidgeon, who narrowly failed to take the record in the Senior Girls' 1500m, and Cross Country internationals, Stephanie Twell (Hants) and Sian Edwards (Northants) who fought out an exciting Senior Girls' 3000m, with Twell outkicking her rival and long-time leader in the final 100m. The pair were only just outside Paula Radcliffe's record. In the Intermediate Boys' 3000m, Simon Horsfield (Manchester) made up a 30m deficit on Abdirisak Ahmed (S Yorks) with 300m remaining, catching his rival in the final strides. Charles Clarke (Bucks) broke his own record in the Intermediate 400m.

Additional comments: All info used. As usual arguably the best meeting of the season. Weather cooler and a lot breezier (wind strongest from 200m to 100m points). Almost certainly cost EP record.  Kilty's wind reading was -1.4secs. His school info from Andy Ward. Sam Coleby was struggling with a recent injury, but I think it  was wrong both heats and final of IG 300m Hurdles (also SG 400H), were in Saturday morning session. Durham's IG Relay team was K Ross (?), L Welch, N Pearson and R Wilmshurst. Sorry but included Coe among NE athletes in report. Surprised Durham were only 4th in Group B competition. Looking at who was competing, felt Helen Gertiig deserved selection for Durham (IG 3000m).

Sainsbury's English Schools Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium.  Day 1.  Fri. 7th July.
Durham athletes made an excellent start to the Sainsbury's English Schools Track and Field Championships, taking three gold and one silver medal on the opening day.
Rebecca Pottinger from Park View School, cleared a personal best height to win the Intermediate Girl' High Jump. Another High Jumper, Philip Collins of Carmen College, Darlington, gained victory in the Intermediate Boys' event on a jump-off from Cameron Lane, Bucks. Collins had taken the Junior title at the same venue two years ago. Both athletes are coached by South Shields-based, Peter Tate. Tyne Breen (Whickham School), coached by leading North East official, Tony Livingstone, improved on her fourth position from last year, to win the Junior Girls' Discus. For good measure, Steve Reynolds took silver in the Intermediate Javelin. Pottinger, Collins and Reynolds will now represent England at next weekend's Schools International, at Grangemouth.
Northumberland's Tim Parkin finished second in the Junior Pole Vault, while Sam Coe of Cumbria, finished 2nd in the Intermediate Hammer.

Additional Comments: Info used but in small print. Results courtesy of Graham Hall and Peter Johnson. Apologies that the latter field event results and final scores were unavailable at copy time. National Athletics League.
Sat. 1st July.
Gateshead Harriers, competing in their first season in the Mens' National League, easily won Saturday's third fixture at Ashford. With one remaining home match, at the International Stadium, Gateshead lead the table by four points from Derby, and are almost certain of promotion. Gateshead's A string winners were: Lewis Robson (400 Hurdles), Craig Sturrock (Shot), Ian Burns (Javelin), Kieran Flannery (800) and Chris Parr (1500).
At the Division 1 fixture at Sheepmount Centre, Carlisle, Border finished strongly to take third place behind Northern rivals, Trafford and City of Sheffield, who look set to be the two promoted teams. Border victories came from Tim Ward (200m) and the ever-reliable Steve Cairns in the Steeplechase.

Additional Comments: All info used but in small print. Division 2 results courtesy of Derek Nicholson (Track) and Bill Woods (Field). Division 3 from Jeff Sturrock initially, and further details from full results which (very surprisingly) were on BAL website, the same night. Weather at Carlisle was sunny with a slight breeze behind runners in straight (never exceeding 2mps though). Slightly cooler than in Newcastle. Julian Golding won B 200m and Jeff Christie won B 400m hurdles. Slightly disappointed that Craig Telford (Border) and David Riley (Trafford) were not competing.
