Additional Comments: Report only used. Will resubmit results for next
Monday (5th August). 60 runners on bright warm evening. George Routledge
would have liked more, but it is in height of holiday season.
Paul Johnson was off 11:30 and John Moore (11.50) and I think John
(27th) was disappointed with run. Aiveen Fox was a lot faster than previous
runs, and it looks as though she is getting fit for winter season. Aiveen
and Liane Brown were "attractions" of evening. Allen Mulliss was 11th (28:31
off 5:40). Ted Joynson luckily did not turn up, and top mark was -2 minutes.
Unofficially the next fastest times were by Jimmy Bell (19:16), Alex Haynes
(19:17) and Dave Anderson of Wallsend (19:19). Pam Gold was off 2.00. Waiting
for full results from GR for further times.

New Marske Victorian 10K Road Race.
Marske-by-the-Sea. Sun. 28th July.
Durham veteran, Rob Hand was untroubled in winning yesterday's Victorian
10K at Marske-by-the-Sea. Despite the warm and sunny conditions, there
was a strong crosswind, which slowed the times considerably, with the inaugural
course records set in 2001, remaining intact. Hand, was joined in the early
stages by fellow veteran, John Hunter of Loftus, before pulling away at
the 2K point. Hunter hung on for second place ahead of visiting Herne Hill
Harrier, Keith Newton. Sheila Allen of Houghton and Peterlee repeated her
2001 victory in the Womens' race, coming home well ahead of Dawn Richardson
of Quakers and ultra-distance specialist, Sharon Gayter of New Marske.
Result.
1 R Hand (Dur, M40) 32:16; 2 J Hunter (Loft, M40) 33:20; 3 K Newton

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 29th July 2002).
Additional Comments: All info used but in small print. Bright and breezy
early on, but temperatures rose as race progressed. 106 runners. Allen
Mulliss clocked 43:04 in 47th place. Sheila Allen finished 27th. Course
records are 31:54 (Barry Stephenson) and 37:14 (Sheila Allen), set on Good
Friday 2001.

British Veterans' Track and Field Championships.
Hendon. Sat 27th / Sun 28th July.
North East athletes gained several gold medals, at this weekend's British
Veterans' Championships, at Hendon.
Morpeth Harrier Archie Jenkins won the Over 50 5000m, and took the
silver in the 1500m and 10000m. Darlington's Ian Barnes took the Over 65
1500m and 5000m titles. Barry Parnaby of the North East Veterans, broke
the British record to take the Over 70 400m title, and was also second
in the 100m. Heaton's Eric Appleby won the Over 70 10000m and was second
in the 5000m. Brenda Elliott of Durham was successful in the Over 50 100m
and 400m. Tynedale's Lynne Marr took the silver medal in the Over 40 10000m.
The extremely hot conditions did not suit the distance runners, with several
athletes being taken to hospital.

Additional Comments: Most of info used, though in small print. Apologies
to anyone missed out, but results were courtesy of Eric Appleby, who rang
from London, where he was staying with relatives. A very long programme
and large timetable, meant it was difficult getting detailed results (some
times missing and some "approximated"). In fact Eric left early on Sunday,
so afternoon's results are not here. Malcolm Price was due to line up in
M40 10000m, and he thinks Eric Smart withdrew because of injury. Reg, I
understand was third in M65 1500m and Kath Stewart won an event on Saturday
(this was before he arrived). Ted Joynson "won" M75 1500m (8:55, seems
a bit fast ?), but was pulled out of 5000m for being too far behind. This
annoyed him and he decided to "compete" in 800m, instead of 10000m on Sunday
(lucky spectators). Pascal Morris won M70 5000m (20:10), and Steve Charlton
(M75) was also ahead of Eric. Charlton won 10000m in a World record time
(42mins approx). Eric lapped second M70 twice. Apparently one of the leaders
in a Womens' 10000m, had a large winning margin with 1.5 laps to go, and
collapsed with heat exhaustion. Ian Barnes was only running the two events
after travelling to the Commonwealth Games, the day before.

Heckington Show.
Sat. 27th July.
John Moore of Heaton won the 800m (2:12.8) and Mile (4:51.8) at the
Heckington Show in Lincolnshire on Saturday. 2001 winner Darren Barton
of Morpeth, took second place in both races.
(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 29th July 2002).
Additional Comments: Info courtesy of John M, used but in small print.
Either standard was not high, or track was like a Cross Country course.
John travelled by train, where he saw Ian Barnes on his way to British
Veterans' Champs. This is probably the only time I will see this result.

Sunderland 5K Road Race (incorporating North
Eastern Counties' A.A Championship).
Silksworth. Wed. 24th July.
It was a night of record breaking at last night's popular Sunderland
5K Road Race, at Silksworth. Michael Openshaw of Birchfield, soon headed
the field on the two lap course, coming home 15 secs ahead of Stewart Bell
of Chester Le Street. Openshaw's time took 9 secs off the old figures set
in 2000. Andrew Toward of Morpeth took third place, with Rob Hand of Durham,
in fourth, bettering the veterans' course record by 18 secs. Dianne Henaghan
of Chester Le Street, four days after setting a 3000m best on the track,
repeated her 2001 victory in the Womens' race, bettering her own record
by 11 secs. Clubmate, Morag McDonnell finished second ahead of Claire Smallwood
of Jarrow and Hebburn, the first three athletes all setting personal best
times. The first three athletes both Men and Women, took the medals in
the North Eastern Counties' Championship, which was incorporated in the
event.

Additional Comments: Not used. Will resubmit results for Monday (29th).
Ideal conditions, bright and sunny, but light cool breeze. Brian Rushworth
held course record. Rob Hand's time was personal best, and Derek Mullen
was old record holder. 212 runners, slightly less than last year. Top quality
field in what is not, a heavily sponsored race. Obviously distance is popular.
Openshaw had not ran course before, saying first part downhill, was
very fast and breeze helped (same sentiments by Henaghan). John Moore (17th
in 16:08), was targeted by Dianne H (19th), as person to help her pacemaking,
and thanked him (in Chronicle) for doing a good job. Morag M was 26th and
Claire S was 27th. Excellent runs from Ryan McLeod and Kirk Wilson, who
had a busy night, 24 hours earlier, at the Relays. Angela H did not compete,
and Sarah Evans clocked 20:40 (17th Lady). Luckily Ted J, who was entered,
did not turn up. Heaton had 8 runners. Gary Campbell (114th in 19:51) and
Allen Mulliss (115th in 19:51), both must have set personal bests. Eric
(only M70) was 153rd. Jo Parkinson was leading lady (161st in 21:43 - 22nd
Woman).

North Eastern Counties' A.A Relay Championships.
Clairville Stadium, Middlesbrough. Tues. 23rd July.
Two championship records were set at the seventh annual championships,
at a damp but windless Clairville Stadium. A young Gosforth team of Jonathon
Graham (1:58.8), Paul Hutton (1:58.0), Matthew Nicholson (1:59.0) and Drew
Graham (1:58.7), led all the way to win the Senior Mens' 4 x 800m, bettering
the two-year-old record by two seconds. Sunderland, the previous record
holders and defending champions, took second place (a tenth-of-a-second
better than there old figures), with Gavin Massingham clocking 1:55.2 on
the final leg. The strong Gateshead Under 15 Girls' 4 x 100 team of Christy
Pattison, Kirsty Thomas, Sophie de la Hunt and Roisin Willi, took nine-tenths
of a second off the old record.
Results.
Senior Men: 4 x 400: 1 Mandale 3:34.5; 2 Gateshead 3:34.6 4 x

South Shields 53.4
Under 13 Girls: 4 x100: Mandale 59.8
Additional Comments: This is AW report. Due to the late finish of meeting
will submit results for Journal (29th July). Damp early on but fared up
and was eventually a quite pleasant evening. Poor turn-out overall (especially
in Womens' events), although entry was better. Best field was six in Under
15 Girls' 4 x 100. Only one Senior Mens' 4 x 100m team, Morpeth, but they
dropped baton. In 4 x 800m, Chris Parr clocked 1:57.0 for Gateshead (4th).
A guest team (mainly Mandale) crossed line first in Under 17 4 x 100. Gateshead's
4 x 400m team was Danny Pope (55.3), Kieran Flannery (54.7), Ben Walpole
(52.3) and Craig Glanville (50.6). Their Under 15 sprint team of Craig
Clare, Steven Horsburgh, James Sinclair and Lewis Robson, broke club record.
Gateshead's Senior Womens' sprint team was Rachel Forrest (I think), Carly
Jones, Vicky Wester and Vicky Carmichael. Morpeth were led by Nichola Halliday
followed by Rachel Archer, Julia Straker, and Natalie Roe. The Gateshead
4 x 400m team was Carmichael (61.5), Katy Beaton (66.2), Wester (59.1)
and Forrest (65.5). Morpeth's team included Halliday (Leg 1) and Nisha
Desai (58.2 last leg). Morpeth, the only 4 x 800m team, saw Danielle Watts,
Rachel Archer, Carley Wilson and Desai (2:26.1) line up. A composite team
including Emma Morris, and others from Gateshead, were first in Under 17
event (52.6). Lauren Arthur was "rested" from Gateshead Under 15 team (they
missed club record by a-tenth), and replaced by Pattison. Gateshead info
from Kevin Flannery. Only one Under 13 Boys and two Under 13 Girls' teams
(both from Mandale). In attendance was Chris Tomlinson, just days before
Commonwealth Games.. Difficult to say how to make the event popular. A
change of venue (preferably in the North of the area), might help, and
perhaps timing (first week of school holidays), needs to be reviewed. Noticeable
by their absence, were the Cottons.

National Young Athletes League.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Sun. 21st July.
Doncaster Stainforth defeated league leaders Morpeth, at the final
National Young Athletes League meeting, at Jarrow, and in so doing won
the Division 1 East title. Morpeth were heading the table on countback,
before yesterday's fixture, but an absence of some leading point scorers,
meant the Northumberland club had to settle for second place, behind their
South Yorkshire rivals. As usual Morpeth were served well by sprinters
Alan Selby and Ben Lavender, but third placed Blaydon provided the meeting's
top performer. Matthew Armstrong, who narrowly missed out on a medal, when
finishing fourth in last weekend's English Schools' 800m, won the Under
17 1500m, and returned two hours later, gaining victory in his speciality
event.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Poor turn-out in Match 1, but
in most events, full fields in Match 2. Morpeth, Stainforth and (surprisingly),
Dearnside (school in Barnsley), were top three teams in division before
meeting started. Title probably means nothing, as leagues are to be restructured
to include Women, next year. Morpeth did not have Nathan Shrubb, Gavin
Driscoll and Paul Moore, and Kirk Wilson turned up late (he was due to
run 400m). Kirk (2:05 +) and Doncaster runner led most of way in 800m (57.3
at bell), before Armstrong sprinted past. In 1500m (Under 17), Mick Groves
and George Patterson were elated that Chris Aynsley gained pb (4:30), after
equalling his 800m pb on route (2:20). Running for Rowntrees was English
Schools' 400m finalist, Richard Huck, who won Under 17 200m (23.6) and
400m (52.2).

BMC Nike Grand Prix.
Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh. Sat. 20th July.
North East athletes performed well at the British Milers Club Nike
Grand Prix, at Meadowbank, on Saturday night. Dianne Henaghan of Chester
Le Street, now a veteran, won the 3000m, with Claire Smallwood of Jarrow,
clocking a personal best in third. Although only 8th in the main 1500m
race, Gateshead's Chris Parr, the English Schools' 3000m silver medallist,
knocked nearly two seconds off his previous best time. Former Tynedale
Harrier, Nick McCormick and old clubmate, Andy Caine, had to settle for
the minor places in the 3000m, behind Scottish International, Glen Stewart.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 22nd July 2002).
Additional Comments: Report not used (rather surprisingly). Info courtesy
of BMC website. Only knew meeting was on, after Jimmy Hedley mentioned
Claire was running, at Veterans' meeting. Dianne H bettered her previous
figures by 8 secs, and Claire by 14 secs (this info received from JH after
being submitted to paper). Weather was damp but wind had dropped. Apparently
track was flooded in parts. Susie Rutherford (4:44) and Nisha Desai (4:55)
also ran in 1500m. Personal bests by Kirk Wilson and (I think) Chris Lamb.
Apologies to Steve Horn, who was second in B 1500m (3:59.05).

Veterans' Athletic Association - North East
Track and Field Championships.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Sat. 20th July.
British Cross Country champion, Rob Hand of Durham, making his debut
at the Veterans' Athletic Association North East Championships at Jarrow
on Saturday, came away with two gold medals. In the near-ideal conditions,
Hand, running in the Over 40 age-group, took 1.8 secs off the old figures
in the 1500m, and later won the 5000m. Sunderland's Denis Field won six
titles in the Over 70 category, breaking the record in the Hammer, and
setting inaugural best performances, in the High and Triple Jump. Also
on the field, Dave Dixon of Border won the Over 40 Long Jump, with a record
distance, and also took the Triple Jump title.
Best performances from the Women, came from Angela Beadnell of Middlesbrough,
who broke the record in the Over 40 Womens' 100m and 200m, and Kath
Stewart of North Shields Poly, who set new figures in the Over 60 800m
and 1500m.
In the Over 65 age-group, Ian Barnes of Darlington set a championship
best in the 1500m, equalled the record in the 800m, and also won the 5000m.
In the Hammer, Elswick's Terry Hudson broke the Over 55 record and
Peter Dodsworth (NE Vets) bettered the old figures in the Over 45 category.
Hudson won the other three throwing events, and John Wild of Richmond and
Zetland, won all throws in the Over 50 category. Barry Parnaby of North
East Vets, gained a treble victory in the sprints in the Over 70 age-group,
setting new figures in the 400m. Morpeth's Archie Jenkins gained a middle
distance treble in the Over 50 category. Malcolm Price of Salford, comfortably
won the Open 3000m, from Matt Tomlinson of Chester Le Street.

Additional Comments: Most of report used. Weather quite warm and sunny,
with little wind. Poor turn-out and according to Reg, five was the maximum
in any one event per age-group, and that in only one competition.
Denis is thinking of "winding down" and is likely to retire from Discus
throwing. He is still ok with Javelin, and was pleased there was no after-effects
with Triple Jump. Ted Joynson clocked 4:40.6 (800m), 9:59.4 (1500m) and
20:44.4 (3000m). He "won" 800m and was second to Jim Caddy in others (700m
behind in latter). Needless to say he was nowhere near standard in any,
and did not get a medal. Reg Checkley gained two silver medals in M60 800m
and 1500m (no times noted). George Routledge was 3rd in M55 Shot (7.32),
3rd in Discus (18.07), and 2nd in Hammer (15.80). His Shot was a standard
and gained him a medal. Eric (only M70) had good battle with Christine
Lee, but was 17 secs outside record. Christine's time was inaugural best.
Kathryn Waugh struggled in open 3000m, and she was paced by Ivan Hollingsworth
for six laps. In both races, Rob Hand dropped Paul Johnson at about halfway.
Brian Kirkley was in attendance, but was on crutches. He goes on holiday
to the Isle of Wight on Monday (22nd).

chilly. 123 finishers. Ted Joynson was 123rd in 69:27. Kevin Carr was in
attendance, forcasting victory for Browell, after Hartlepool win. Rob Hand
kicked away from Browell, with about 300m remaining. John Moore (Heaton's
only runner) led early on, dropped to sixth at halfway (ahead of Smith,
Johnson and McDonald), but admitted he started too fast. He is not getting
proper training in, due to regular travelling to croquet matches. Apparently
for some reason, runners did not go round "Angel" this time. Almost certain
Under 11 winner (who looked impressive) is son of Rob.

overall) in 46:29, but did not want her performance published. She developed
stitch, after one lap and ran as favour to race organiser, Andrea Adams.
Nice venue and fast course, but host club probably should have advertised
more, in south of region. Anywhere north of Chester Le Street is a long
journey, for night race, and I doubt many of the athletes from Darlington
area, knew it was on. Very noticeable that Lindsay Dunn, one of those behind
the inaugural event in 2001, was not there.

Heaton Harriers First Sport Women Only Dene
Run.
Jesmond Dene. Mon. 15th July.
Claire Smallwood won last night's Heaton Harriers ,First Sport sponsored,
Women Only Dene Run, for the fourth successive year. In the very warm conditions,
the Jarrow and Hebburn athlete, led the 220 strong field from the start,
opening up a gap of over a minute on clubmate, Denise Todd. In so doing,
Smallwood took 35 secs off Kirsty Wade's six-year-old course record. Todd
was the leading veteran, with Teesdale teenager, Claire Robson, repeating
her 2001 third position. With Helen Smith finishing 19th, Jarrow and Hebburn
easily retained the team title, ahead of North Shields Poly and Gosforth.

Additional Comments: Most of report used. 218 finishers. As usual a
good event on a beautiful evening.. Venue of Millfield House Cafe was much
better, and also nearer start. Problems with computer results, and I was
unable to find out who was first W55 on night (turned out to be Pam Gold,
who was 53rd in 26:16). Full results courtesy of George Ogle, received
by Tueday (pm). Angela Hunter was having first race for four weeks (after
injury and holiday). She eased off after first loop in Heaton Park (was
74th in 27:06).. Heaton were fourth team (Anita Nott was 23rd in 24:09
and Kelly McEntee was 24th in 24:15). Gateshead were fifth. Among
spectators was Catherine Brennan, who did know race was on (why was she
there then ?). Nice to see Claire Robson, Vicki Russell and Victoria Bennett
competing (for more than one reason).

North of England Inter Club Cup.
Eastbourne Sports Centre, Darlington. Sun. 14th July.
Stewart Bell of Chester le Street, maintained his excellent form, to
win the North Eastern Counties' 10000m title, at Eastbourne Centre, Darlington,
yesterday. Bell led all the way in the hot and humid conditions, lapping
all of his opposition. The event was incorporated in the qualifying round
of the North of England Inter Club competition. As expected Gateshead ad
Morpeth progressed to the Final of the main Cup, which will be held at
Cudworth in August. In the Plate event, New Marske and Richmond and Zetland,
progressed to the Final. Hull Achilles proved too strong for the local
teams, in the Womens' Cup. Gateshead and Morpeth tied for second place,
but Gateshead go through, as they gained more individual victories.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Quite an enjoyable meeting at
new venue for me. Stewart Bell's halfway time was 15:28. He was well inside
5min miling for first fifteen laps, but the heat would have taken it's
toll (12 noon, not a good time). There were nine runners in this event.
It was a beautiful warm sunny day. Venue was quite good, though a lot of
sand on track. Felt that all of hut, could have been used next to track,
for changing/toilets etc, instead of opening just three end rooms. Still
the main centre was only 100m away. Good to see so many of competitors
from English Schools' event. Unlike George Patterson, I thought Nisha Desai
was lucky to catch Rosie Smith on final lap, as she was giving her up to
50m start at bell. It was Veronica Wabukawo's last race for Gateshead,
as she is going back to Uganda. It was Vicky Barr's first outing since
recovering from injury. She was joined by Wabukawo, Carly Jones and Lucy
Butler in sprint Relay team. Vicky Bennett replaced Jones in 4 x 400m.
Enjoyed watching Long and Triple Jump (not necessarily for jumping). Not
sure Morpeth wanted to qualify in Mens' match, but if Craig Telford had
not run final leg in 4 x 400m, they would not have done. Forget to make
note of Ian Burns' winning Javelin throw (sorry !).

English Schools Track and Field Championships.
Harvey Hadden Stadium, Nottingham. Sat 13th July.
Durham proved the area's strongest county taking two gold medals, at
the weekend's English Schools Track and Field Championships, at Harvey
Hadden Stadium, Nottingham. For the first time this season, competitors
were treated to two days of sunshire, with warm temperatures, especially
on Saturday. Lewis Robson added to Graham Jackson's win on Friday, by gaining
an emphatic victory in the Junior Boys' 400m. Robson's time was a personal
best, taking half-a-second off the figures he set when winning his semi
final. Durham gained further medals with Chris Parr taking the silver in
the Senior 3000m and Kerry Elliott the bronze, in the Senior Girls Shot.
Northumberland had to settle for second place in three events. James Sinclair
was passed in the final strides of the Junior Boys' 200m, losing by four-hundredths
of a second to David Hurst of Greater Manchester. Sinclair had previously
been beaten by Hurst, again very narrowly, in the recent Northern 100m
and 200m Championships. Northumberland almost took the Intermediate Boys'
4 x 400m Relay title. Alan Selby, Paul Moore and Ben Lavender handed over
to Kalechi Esconu, with a significent lead, only for Middlesex to overtake
in the final 20m. Nisha Desai, fourth last year, was unable to match the
stength of Donna Riding of Greater Manchester, taking the silver medal
in the Senior Girls' 800m. Northumberland also gained two bronze medals,
with Charlotte Wickham finishing strongly to take third in the Senior Girls'
1500m. The 2001 Intermediate 200m silver medallist David Riley, finished
third, this time in the Senior age-group. Keith Higham was Cumbria's sole
medallist on the second day, finishing second in the Intermediate Pole
Vault. Higham, along with Jackson, will represent England, in this weekend's
Schools International match, at Glasgow. Sunderland-based Mark Christie,
a student at Loughborough College, and therefore representing Leicestershire,
finished third in the Senior Pole Vault. Merseyside's Michael Rimmer, broke
the 14-year-old championship record in the Intermediate 800m, with Durham's
Matthew Armstrong, finishing fourth in a personal best time. Established
International, Aileen Wilson of Cmbridgeshire, won a record eighth
Schools' title in the Senior Girls' High jump. With Saturday's guest-of-honour
being London Marathon director, David Bedford, it was fitting that the
last individual track event of the meeting, the Senior 2000m Steeplechase,
was won by his son, Tom.

Additional Comments: Most of info used (up to Higham). Very hot day
and little wind. Apparently there was a shortage of water later on, and
some officials became dehydrated. Good performances by North East athletes
(better than I expected). David Riley certainly improved in final. Very
disappointed that I did not see Gemma Fergusson eventually win a Schools'
title (she was on her way to Jamaica, for World Junior Championships).
Mark Christie was disappointing in Pole Vault. Drew Graham put in a creditable
performance, after an excellent heat. Claire Robson trailed home 9th in
Senior 1500m, after looking good when 2nd, in heat. Alan Selby only lost
out on final pace in 200m, by photo-finish. Esconu is, I think, a rugby
player from Royal Grammar School. Matthew Lomax, considering controversy
regarding his selection, ran well to place seventh in Intermediate 3000m,
after starting off at steady pace. Impressive performances by Tom Lancashire
to win Senior 1500m (3:48), and Rathan Nathan, who clocked 9:39 to break
record in Intermediate Girls' 3000m. Rimmer's bell time was 54 secs. Running
for the non-qualifying Senior Boys' Northumberland Relay team, were Drew
Graham and Ryan McLeod. Competing in Steeplechase, were both Alex Haynes
and Mark Elliott, both of whom are nowhere near standard.

English Schools Track and Field Championships.
Harvey Hadden Stadium, Nottingham. Fri. 12th July.
The North East was rewarded after a long wait in the eight hour
programme, when they produced two gold medallists at yesterday's opening
session of the English Schools Track and Field Championships, at Harvey
Hadden Stadium, Nottingham. Graham Jackson, representing Durham, won the
last field event of the programme, the Intermediate Triple Jump, with a
leap of 14.16 metres. Not surprisingly the student at Durham Johnson School,
who was second last year, is coached by Peter Stanley, who also looks after
Jonathon Edwards and Chris Tomlinson. An hour earlier, Cleveland's Leslie
Richards, won a highly competitive Senior Discus, with a throw of 47.87
metres. It was Richard's second successive Schools' title, having won the
Intermediate event, last year. Cumbria's Lee Doran, took second place,
in the Senior Javelin, throwing 56.98 metres. Durham's Lewis Robson, easily
won his semi-final of the Junior 400m, in 52.5 secs. Northumberland's James
Sinclair, was the fastest qualifier in the first round of the Junior 200m
(23.20 secs).
(Newcastle Journal: Sat 13th July 2002).
Additional Comments: All info used. Results submitted for Monday (15th).
Robson's semi time was actually 51.42 secs. The result was not available
at end of meeting, and I am sure the announcer said 52.42 secs. Robson
was not impressive in first round, however. Triple Jump result was not
available either, and I had to get this from announcer's box. Very warm
but a slight breeze blowing. Very hot on trackside. Chris Campbell had
to pull out of Inter Boys 400m semi with blisters. Craig Glanville won
his heat in 49.98 secs (a pb), but struggled. This was shown in semi, when
he did not qualify in a slower time. The main problem was that the track
had only seven lines (a retrogade step by the organisers), and the would-be
qualifiers had to try much harder in semis, as it was the first two + three
fastest, rather than first three + two fastest. Dreadful runs by Kelly
Rodmell and Emma Nesbitt, and Roisin Willi was disappointing in Junior
200m, finishing fourth in heat (27.4 secs). Sophie Dewell was fourth (of
4), in Pole Vault. Aileen Wilson won High Jump at Mansfield (why was her
event given a B status ?), and result only appeared on Saturday morning.
Press well looked after by Mr and Mrs Haywood, but only received tea and
coffee ( + water on Saturday). Simon Leonard was there talking about catering
for Press at 2004 Championships, at Gateshead.

Barclays Sunshine Run.
Newcastle/Gateshead Quayside. Wed. 10th July.
Stewart Bell recorded his second victory in four days, when winning
the inaugural Barclays Sunshine Run, last night. Bell, successful in the
Kilburn 7M on Sunday, led all the way on the looped course, starting on
Newcastle Quayside and finishing at the Baltic Centre, Gateshead. Rob Hand
of Durham , was the leading veteran in second place, ahead of Sunderland's
Andrew Lilliendale. Veterans dominated the Womens' race, with Jarrow's
Denise Todd, coming home 30secs ahead of Heather Robinson of Chester Le
Street. Over 700 runners took part in the event.
Result. Distance 5K.

3 S Armstrong (unatt) 19:14
(Newcastle Journal: Thurs 11th July 2002).
Additional Comments: All info used. Full results not available (only
first twenty-five), so no idea of number of finishers (appeared in Chronicle
three days later but no positions). Ian Barnes clocked 19:40 (25th), and
Eric Appleby's time was 21:15 (47th) on his 70th birthday. John Josephs
was 50th (21:28), but John Moore was a notable absentee (not recoverd from
trip to Geneva). Third lady runner, Stacey Armstrong from Newcastle College,
was a member of Gosforth. Kim Davison was fourth lady (19:44), followed
by Amanda Dickinson (20:42) and Lisa Walker (21:17). Not sure if this was
proper race or a Fun Run ? Only about 50 decent runners, mainly joggers
(last time was 62mins +). Ted Joynson, clocked 35:30, which suggests he
did not complete the full distance. Bell won Kilburn race by 4mins (38:17),
and Sheila Allen won Womens' event. (46:19)..

Journal for Monday (15th). 62 runners. Claire broke her own inaugural figures
from 2001, by 38secs. Tim was 20 secs outside Brian Rushworth's record.
I understand Denis was not there. Noticeable that Ruth Brown was listed
as unattached. Claire only ran this, because Jimmy thought Quayside Race
was Fun Run only.

North of England Womens' Track and Field League.
Sun 7th July.
With the wind abating, there were several impressive performances,
at yesterday's Northern Womens' League matches, at Monkton. Claire Smallwood
of Jarrow and Hebburn, took part in several events for her club, in Division
3, gaining victories in the Senior 800m, 1500m and 3000m. Her winning time
in the 800m was a personal best, after being challenged all the way, by
Sam Hart of New Marske. For good measure, Claire also set new figures in
the 400m, when finishing second in the B event. North Eastern Under 13
champion, Rebecca Shield of Durham, moved up an age-group to win the Under
15 800m.
In the Division 4 match, Blaydon's numerical strength told as they
defeated the Gateshead B squad. Outstanding for Gateshead, was Vicky Carmichael,
who won the Senior 100m and 200m, the latter in a personal best time. Kerry
Elliott also gained good points in the Shot and Discus, and Nichola Baker,
made a welcome to competition, with maximum points in the B Shot, Discus
and Javelin. Sunderland's Lisa Cowell, set new figures to win the Under
15 High Jump.
Results.

Additional Comments: Nearly all info used. Quite an enjoyable meeting,
though there were several gaps in timetable later on. Poor turn-out in
Division 4 (North Shields Poly had recently withdrawn), but better than
expected in higher division. Missing from Division 4 results was Under
17 Shot, where the Tucker twins gained maximum points for Blaydon. Nice
to see back in action for Jarrow, was Gemma Hulme, who I think was third
in the 100m, 200m and 400m. She also ran both Relays (4th and 2nd), as
did Claire, whose 400m time was 63.4 secs (behind Mandale athlete), and
Denise Todd. Caroline Ratcliff clocked 2:27.4 in 800m (sixth). Also competing
for Durham, were Brenda Elliott and Julie Coleby (Jumps only). Other known
personal bests by Sam Hart and Claire Harrison. Learnt that Sam Crowe and
Ashley Gibson have not been picked for Northumberland in English Schools
Championships, yet Emma Nesbitt has. Angela is on holiday at present.

North of England Mens' Track and Field League.
Sat. 6th July.
Gateshead took second place in their Northern League Division 1 fixture,
at Grimsby on Saturday, and now hold a one-and-a-half point lead
in the table, with one match remaining. Morpeth struggled to ffinish seventh,
despite dominating the track events, and also lie seventh overall. In the
Division 2 fixture at Middlesbrough, Peter Vickers gained a sprint double
for Mandale, and Stephen Hepples of New Marske outclassed the opposition
in the 1500m.
Highlight of the Division 3 match, hastily rearranged to take place
at Hexham, was the return to form of Jarrow's Adam Rogers in the 400m.
The 2001 Indoor National champion, sidelined with injury for over 12 months
since that victory, put in by far his best performance, since his return
to competition in April. North Shields Poly won the match, helped by a
double victory in the Shot and Discus, by Paul Corrigan.

Additional Comments: Most of info used. Division 1 info courtesy from
Chris Betts and Divisions 2 and 4, from Andy Ward. Morpeth very weak on
Field events (probably not helped by Richard Hunter competing for Gateshead,
though his new main club is Tynedale). There was no "aggro" on Teesside
this time. There was a star line-up of timekeepers there, with the Browns
and Roger Everton. Chaos at Hexham. There was no host club, no refreshments
(apart from in Centre), and no Senior Officials appointments had been made.
North Shields Poly were originally due to host at Lightfoot (!), but dropped
out before start of season. Hexham was only confirmed as venue, five days
before. There was no starter (one came from Carlisle just before 100m commenced)
and no Steeplechase event, took place. Water Jump took too long to fill
up, and barrier on finishing straight was missing. First two track events
started by "clapper". Adam Rogers also ran 49.8 Relay leg (Jarrow were
second behind North Shields Poly, for whom, Shane Smith clocked 51.1 on
Leg 3).

Patterson Ford Tynedale 10K Road Race.
Ovingham nr Hexham. Wed. 3rd July.
Last-minute entry, Michael Openshaw, easily won this popular summer
event. In the sunny and warm, but breezy conditions, the 2001 World Championship
5000m Great Britain representative, was content to follow early leader
Stewart Bell, for the first 2M, before pulling away to a 41 secs victory.
Rob Hand was the leading veteran, in an isolated third place.
Claire Smallwood easily won the Womens' race, finishing in an excellent
19th position, in the 460 strong field. Smallwood improved her previous
best figures for the distance, by a massive 46 secs. Catherine Brennan
took second place ahead of Judith Nutt, with Fiona Shenton the first veteran,
in fifth position.

Additional Comments: Got home too late to send to Journal for Thursday
(4th), but will submit results for Monday (8th). Report is adapted from
that sent to AW. 456 finishers (not as many as 2001, but good quality).
North Shields Poly had a good evening. Delays with results as there were
separate Senior and Veterans' team prizes. A combined Womens' team competition,
would have seen Heaton finish second behind Elswick. Heaton's counters
were Jo Smith (136th), Jo Parkinson (262nd in 46:35), and (an unknown to
me) Ann Grenfell (352nd in 51:06). The Veterans' team of Anita Nott, Shirley
Atkinsom and Margaret Finn were fourth. Relating to Womens'
points, they should be as of their position in Womens' race, not overall
race (as calculated here). Not sure about this, but apart from first two,
the other leading runners were slower than last year. Claire, who won in
2001, was a minute faster. John Moore, should probably have finished fifth.
Heaton had 13 runners. Ted started off 15mins ahead of field, but only
had eleven behind him (including George R). Ted's time of 76mins 11secs
(85:30 in 2001), seemed very fast for him, and there is a point, he could
have cut off nearly a mile. Not sure of course records. Kevin Forster holds
Mens' record (early 90's around 30mins) and either Lynn Harding or Jill
Boltz is Womens' holder (34mins +).

Heaton Harriers Jesmond Dene Handicap.
Mon. 1st July.
Saltwell Harrier, Tim Forster was declared the winner, of last night's
third race in the Heaton Jesmond Dene Handicap Series, after Tynedale's
Barry Jameson, who was well clear of the field at the finish, was disqualified
for starting off the wrong mark. Heaton's John Moore clocked the fastest
time, and Morpeth teenager Aiveen Fox, was easily the fastest lady.

73 finishers on damp evening (Bernie Cordes dropped out). Lucky race
took place in between heavy showers, but it was tricky underfoot in parts.
Ted Joynson (off - 13 mins), came home in a "high" 24th placing (42:40).
He led for most of way. He said he clocked 2hrs 23mins at Croxdale ! Not
sure of mark that Barry Jameson started from, which is why he has no individual
time (27:35 was race time). He should have started off 10mins 30secs, but
was much earlier than that. JM (32nd) was off 11:50. Good run by Ryan Stephenson.
Aiveen Fox finished in 20th position. Apologies to Martin Connelly (Elswick)
(17th), whose time of 19:20 was third fastest (only discovered when seeing
final results). Alex Haynes was fifth fastest (19:31) followed by Jimmy
Bell (M50) (19:56). Phil Lancaster (M60) clocked 20:30. Some regulars were
missing, due to clash with Veterans' League. Heard that Ivan Hollingsworth
has resigned from Wallsend, to join Morpeth.
