Saucony English National Cross Country Championships.
Parliament Hill Fields, London. Sat 25th Feb.
North East athletes came home with two individual silver medals and
one set of team silver, at Saturday's Saucony English National Cross Country
Championships, at Parliament Hill Fields. Conditions were bright and dry,
but there was a biting cold wind, which was in the face of the runners,
in the finishing straight. Gateshead's Ross Murray, the North of England
champion, took second place in the opening event for Under 15 Boys,
losing out on a sprint finish to Stroud's Matthew Withey. This was an identical
result to last year's English Schools championship, but ths time Murray
was a lot closer to his rival. Like the Under 15 event, the Under 17 race
was a repeat of the 2005 Schools Championship at Norwich, with Ricky Stevenson
of New Marske again having to settle up for the runners-up spot, behind
Nuneaton's Lee Carey.
Northern champions Morpeth finished second in the Junior Mens' team
event. They were led home by Nick Swinburn in 18th place, supported by
a much improved run from Jonathan Young, who did not count at Blackburn
(31st), Ross Floyd (33rd) and Andrew Lawrence (44th). Morpeth just lost
out on the medals in the Under 15 Girls' race, with Laura Weightman, leading
them home in 8th position.
Paul Riley of Leigh dominated the Senior Mens' race opening up an early
lead on the two lap course, winning by 17secs. Gateshead's Alan Buckley
finished 7th and North East-based Shaftesbury Barnet Harrier and former
champion, Dominic Bannister finished 10th. Leeds took the team title.
Liz Hall from Hertfordshire, was a surprise winner of the Senior Womens'
race, pulling away from Kendal's Gemma Phillips after the halfway point.
North East born Sale Harrier, Sonia Thomas took 5th place and Rebecca Robinson
also from Kendal and a student at Newcastle University finished 7th.
North Eastern champion, Mark Shaw of New Marske, in the bottom year
of his age-group, finished a creditable 9th in the Under 13 Boys' race.

Saltwell Park, Gateshead. Sat. 11th Feb.
Sunderland Harriers regained the Royals Signals Trophy, by winning
Saturday's North Eastern Counties Road Relay Championship at a freezing
Saltwell Park, for the first time since 1997. This ended Morpeth's run
of eight successive victories. A severely weakened Morpeth team, this time
had to be satisfied with 13th position, finishing even behind their Veterans'
team. Brian Rushworth, who was switched from the Wearsiders' veterans squad,
took the lead on stage 4, after previous legs by Tim Field (2nd), Jack
Martin (3rd) and Steve Potts (3rd). Mark Hood and Patrick Martin extended
the advantage to 55secs at the finish line, with Gateshead taking second
place and North Shields Poly, who briefly led after leg 3, in 3rd. Elswick
led after the two initial legs through Steven Horn and Ryan McLeod, who
clipped one second off last year's inaugural course record set by former
clubmate, Dan Samuels.
Sunderland, even without Rushworth and Field, were still easy winners
of the Veterans' race for the fifth consecutive year. Sunderland took the
lead from North Shields Poly (who finished 3rd) on leg 2, with 4th leg
runner, Tom Doughty clocking the fastest time. Morpeth took the silver
medals.
Records also went in the Womens' race over 4legs, with Chester Le Street,
winners in 2003 and 2004, bettering the old figures by a massive 2mins
25secs in the team contest, and Alyson Dixon taking 12secs off the individual
record. Philippa McCrea led for defending champions Gateshead on leg 1
ahead of Jarrow's Angela Hunter and Dianne Henaghan, who was making a welcome
return to competition, for Chester Le Street. Maxine Czarnecka lifted the
Durham club into the lead on leg 2, with Kathryn Waugh and Alyson Dixon
extending the advantage to a massive 3mins 36secs over Jarrow and Hebburn,
with Gateshead taking the bronze medals.

Additional Comments: Report slightly edited. Weather bitterly cold,
with a little bit of wind. Dry and bright. Again problems with results.Probably
due to number of legs over a short distance. Morpeth spilts were: R Floyd

P Bentley 14:25. Paul Bentley missed take over by about 2mins. Also Les
Atkinson was about 45secs late starting his leg. Cannot blame Morpeth team
management for being annoyed with turn-out. Other splits included: SW:

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League.
Edmond Campion School, Wrekenton. Sat. 4th Feb.
Sunderland Harriers tightened their grip on retaining the Division
1 title, with an easy victory in the Senior Mens' race, over their nearest
rivals, Durham City. The Wearsiders also provided the fastest competitor,
Steve Potts, who moved through from the fast pack, to 19th position in
the 250 strong field. Individual victory went to Army sergeant Alan Shepherd
of Morpeth, now based in Newcastle, with Alnwick's Dave Kirkland finishing
second from the medium pack.
Another army representative, Danielle Hodgkinson of Wallsend, easily
won the Womens' race, from fast pack runner, Donna James of Elvet. Elswick
took the team awards, from Elvet Striders, who extended their lead in the
overall table. The clash with the Inter County Schools event at Durham,
meant that the youngsters races, especially at Under 15 and Under 17 level,
saw much depleted fields. This new venue proved popular with athletes,
on what was arguably the most glorious day for weather so far in 2006.

overruled. Shepherd had only recently returned from a spell in Afghanistan.

Inter County Schools Cross Country Meeting.
Meadowfield Sports Centre, Durham. Sat. 4th Feb.
Honours were shared in the annual Inter County Schools' competition
at Meadowfield, ran in glorious conditions, with Durham winning the
Boys' title and Northumberland, strongest in the Girls' section. Durham
won the Overall trophy.
In a top quality Senior Boys' event, North of England Under 20 bronze
medallist Jon Taylor (who won the Cardiff Challenge race), used his track
speed to outsprint British Junior Fell Running champion, Nick Swinburn
of Northumberland. Mary Ferrier held off her great rival from Northumberland,
Delyth James in the Senior Girls' race, maintaining their placings in the
North Eastern Championship.
Ross Murray of Northumberland, 2nd in the 2004 English Schools Junior
event, and recently crowned Northern Under 15 champion, impressively won
the Intermediate Boys' race. Helen Girtig of Durham overhauled long-time
leader, Natalie Young of Northumberland, with 400m remaining to win
the Intermediate Girls' race. Another Northern Under 15 champion, Kate
Avery of Durham outclassed her rivals in the Junior Girls' event, and looks
set to improve on her 5th placing in the 2005 English Schools championship.
Tristan Venus, who lives in Northumberland but studies a few miles along
the road in Cumbria, comfortably won the Junior Boys' race. Cleveland's
Katy Templeman reversed the Northern placings with twin sister Elizabeth
to win the non-scoring Minor Girls' event. North Eastern U13 champion,
Mark Shaw of Cleveland dominated the Minor Boys' race.

courtesy of Pat Narey. A good meeting as always, but slightly spoiled by
some of the "over officiousness" of some of the Sports centre staff. Weather
was nice, mild and sunny, though I understand outer section of course,
was very "sticky" in parts. Kate Avery was 1secs slower, than when she
won Durham title. Apologies but reference to Murray's English Schools second
place, should read 2005.:Other results (times taken for thirty, but only
noted 20) included: SB: 21 A Welford (N); 22 D McMeiken (D); 33 A Colwell
