Nissan 10km Road Race.
Washington.  Sun. 27th Aug.
Cleveland-based Steve Hepples comfortably won yesterday's inaugural Nissan 10km Road Race, organised by Chester Le Street and District AC. Hopes of a fast time on the course taking in the site of the Sunderland Plant, were dashed, when windy conditions developed throughout the morning, Hepples headed the 230-strong field at 5km (16:03) closely followed by the Morpeth pair of Chris Sampson and Mark Hudspith. The advantage was extended to 21secs at the finish line, with Hudspith overhauling Sampson to take second place. Sunderland's Brian Rushworth was the leading veteran in 5th position. Sunderland also provided the Womens' winner, with Louise Noble crossing the line in 25th position. Noble, who passed halfway in 18:58, had a victory margin of 1min 47secs over Tracy Laws of Chester Le Street, with Morpeth's Kate Chapman finishing 3rd.

Additional Comments: All info used but in small print. 230 finishers (last time: 98:52). No late entries were available, so field could have been a lot larger, for this new event. 40 in 5km (last time: 37:51). 3km Fun Run was won by Amanda Watt in 10mins 20secs (approx). This was estimated  distance (probably 2.6km). Nice sunny morning but very windy (no wind at 8.00am). Dave Whitmore finished 151st in 52:28. Eric Appleby's halfway time was 23:36 (about 80m behind Ian Barnes) so extra distance did not suit. Heaton performances were: 26 D Robins 38:20; 95 A Mulliss 45:33; 127 E Appleby. Jo Zoppi dropped out at halfway when lying 5th. She did not seem very well.

12th Tartan Games.
Gateshead International Stadium. Sat. 26th Aug.
The warm bright weather, together with the almost windless conditions, meant that several meeting records were broken at Saturday's 12th Gateshead Harriers Tartan Games, at the International Stadium.
Cleveland-based Trafford athlete, Leslie Richards set new figures in the Senior Mens' Discus. His winning throw of 53.77m , also gained him a qualifying standard for next year's European Under 23 Championships.
English Schools 100m champion, Richard Kilty of the host club, comfortably bettered the old figures when gaining a sprint double in the Under 17 age-group, and was only just outside his personal best in both events.
Another Gateshead Harrier, Ian Burns improved his old figures by over a metre in the Senior Mens' Javelin.
Jessica Read also of Gateshead won the Under 13 100m and Long Jump breaking both records in the process. For good measure her 100m heat time of 13.15secs, also improved the old figures. In the same age-group, clubmate Catherine Davison set new figures in the
Shot.
Dean Barratt of Gateshead (Under 20 Javelin) and Kate Wilson of Birtley (Under 20 Hammer) were other record breakers. Darlington's Matthew Smith narrowly shaved the record in the Under 17 hurdles.
Ryan Stephenson of North Shields Poly pulled away from Elswick's Ryan McLeod in the final 100m to win the Stan Long Mile.
Other sprint doubles came from Sale's Adam Rodgers (Senior Men), Victoria Carmichael of Gateshead (Senior Women) and the ever-improving Faye Bowles of Darlington (Under 15 Girls).

Additional Comments:  All info used but in small print. Weather bright most of afternoon with occasional short shower. Meeting finished at 4.50pm, which is a lot earlier than usual. Thanks to Mrs Kaufman/Mrs Betts for results. Unfortunately the Senior Discus results seem to have been mislaid (info on Richards from Bill McGuirk). Slightly disappointed with turn-out (compared to entry) for Stan Long Mile. ( 9 starters and only 5 finishers. M Elliott & J Orange were two dnf's). At least it was quicker than Emsley Carr Mile !  Splits were 62.3,  2:06.6 (M Elliott), 3:11.1 (R McLeod). Stephenson and McLeod were together at 1500m (3:53.1) (timed by M Andersen). Kilty's wind reading in 100m was +0.8mps.

(Newcastle Journal:  Mon. 21st August 2006).

Additional Comments: All info used. 165 finishers (84 advance entries) (last time: 66:14). Weather bright and breezy. Not sure why entry is low compared to similar midweek events ? Lacks quality in depth also. Main news of night was the resignation of two prominent members of the host club. Dave Whitmore finished 138th. John Moore was joint leader with West at Dougies Tavern (400m).
