Good turn- out in U13 and U15 age-groups (especially Girls). There were actually 2 U15G  heats (to eliminate Gateshead C team). Gateshead were only team in 2 SM Relays, but the 4x400m team, had a good battle throughout with U17 Chester Le Street squad (best race of evening). Andrew Coffer outstayed his rival on final leg. Very dark on back straight when floodlights on.

Additional Comments: All used apart from pre-race info. George P is going on holiday to Greece. Had not got full resullts of Tartan Games, which is why some performances may be missing. As all events are held in August, I have included in this section of site.

Gateshead Harriers Centenary Tartan Games.
International Stadium.  Sat. 28th Aug.
The cool breezy conditions affected track performances at Saturday's 11th Tartan Games, at Gateshead International Stadium, but there were still a number of meeting records.
Rebecca Pottinger of Birtley, who missed the early part of the season through injury, added 4 cms to the Under 15 High Jump record. Rebecca, who recently won the Northern Inter Counties' title, cleared 1.61m. North Eastern and Northern champion, Stacey Mohamed of Jarrow and Hebburn, bettered the previous best figures in the Senior Javelin, by 66cms. A.A.A champion, Yusuf Aliu of Middlesbrough, easily won the Under 15 100m, taking nine-hundredths of a second off the old record. Like most sprinters. the English Schools runner-up, had to contend with a slight headwind. Runner-up, Anthony Hall of Jarrow and Hebburn, gained impressive victories in the 200m and Triple Jump. Daniel Ghundoo of Darlington shaved a hundredth-of-a-second off the old figures, in the Under 17 100m Hurdles. Former Jarrow athlete, Adam Rogers, now running in the Sale colours, gained a sprint double in the Senior age-group. John Taylor from Middlesbrough, still in the Under 17 age-group, easily won the Senior 800m.
English Schools and A.A.A High Jump champion, Emma Morris of South Shields, won her speciality event and also won the Under 20 sprint Hurdles, in a personal best time. Gateshead athletes, Titi Ameobi (sprints) and Leah Weatheritt (Shot and Hammer) gained double victories in the Senior age-group. Sam Coleby of Durham, recent winner of the Northern Pentathlon, comfortably won the Under 15 800m and took second place in the High Jump, bettering her previous best figures, by 1cm. Steph Hopkinson of Birtley won the Shot and Discus, in the same age-group.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 30th August 2004).

Additional Comments: Report severely edited and in "Sports Shorts". Probably due to extensive Olympic coverage. Weather dry, sunny later on, but wind changing direction at regular intervals. Meeting finished at 5.30pm. However only Field events (thanks to George and Audrey for these), and half of Male results were available at this time. Luckily, I had copies of judges/timekeepers result slips and seeding sheets, which meant I could fill missing gaps. This did take some time however, and apologies if any errors (there is usually some at this meeting). Also incorporated was a disabled Grand Prix meeting, and I understand their Field events, were 1hr 40mins behind, after just three hours.
Special mention to Lisa Sabel, who gained an excellent treble and Jenny Hudson, who gained a shock victory in the U13 800m, coming with a late run to pass long-time leader, Kate Avery. Jenny was also 2nd in 200m and Long Jump. Again a poor turn-out in Senior 200m final. Only 3 runners turned up, after qualifying from 3 heats. Some "dubious" seeding saw Ricky Stevenson easily win "B" U17 800m in 2:07. Cable broke causing photo finish not to work, in last set of finals (not used in heats). Some sprints did not seem to have a wind reading.

Additional Comments: Only results sent due to time lapse. Weather getting quite chilly, showery and strong breeze blowing. 13 runners in 10km and 11 in 5km. Anita Nott dropped out in latter. Eric A clocked 13:15 at 3km. Halfway time for leaders (Merrison and Jones) in 10km was 17:25. Merrison led early on but was caught and passed for a while, by Jones. Merrison dropped rival with 8 laps remaining. Dave Whitmore was 3rd M65 (48:12.6). Ted Joynson was 2nd M80 (39:12.3). He was lapped by JJ. Ted even held start of race up, by not being on starting line, on time. Absentees (both went to "Newcastle 2 Norwich 2" match) included Reg Checkley and Allen Mulliss. Denis Field was unable to hold his throwing events. Stadium would not let him, for some reason.

Weather mainly dry with some showers, but little wind, Saturday. Drier, cooler and a lot more breezy Sunday. Meeting started at 9.00am both days, and it was 9.40pm finish Saturday, and, I understand, 11.30pm. Sunday, when last 10000m runner finished. I left at 10.40pm, after first eleven runners including Peter Coates (45mins +) had completed . There was a previous 10000m, where all runners broke 60mins. Coates, John Laughran and Dale Jordan, were the only North East entries, from the 46 competitors. There was a young "Ted Joynson" taking part (called Sam, with 30:05 5000m), but he pulled out with three events remaining, after injuring himself in Javelin. Only 7 competed in Womens` event, with Jacqui Elliott dropping out through injury after Day 1. She was lying 2nd (first Senior) and her performances were: 20.89, 1.30, 5:08.5, 71.38, 8.10 and 28.61.
Sam Coleby set pb's in both Jumps and in competition, going to 3rd spot in UK rankings. Amy Fleming finished 6th, Alice Ramsey 7th, Lauren Dewdney 8th (1999pts inc. 11.88 75H), and Eleanor Murray 12th (1645). Only 6 in Boys, but 12 in Girls' Pentathlon (of course male event clashed with Inter Counties !). Impressive performance from Catha Lannon. Mens' Decathlon was mainly made of those, only competing in selected events. Won by Ashley Pritchard (Macclesfield) (5873 pts). Congratulations to Richard Hunter (off to Athens the next day) and Sophie Dewell for their efforts, and of course Brenda J and sister in results room.

There were one or two disappointing performances, that I will not mention. Looks like North East were top male team, but no better than third in Womens' section (behind Yorks and Lancs). Late News (AW 2nd Sept): Johanna Jackson won Senior 5km Walk in 24mins 43.68 secs. Congratulations to her.

Additional Comments: Little bit of info used. Meeting delayed 15mins due to traffic congestion. Dry at start, but during U15 Girls 200m, electric storms came and programme stopped for 30mins. Would have been abandoned if bad weather continued for another 15mins. Due to flloodlight problems, many remaining events combined, with last race (U15 B/G 800m) ran almost in darkness. Pole Vault was concluded early and some field events cancelled. Despite the wet conditions the Shot performances were good. Sturrock set pb. Difficulty working out seperate results for combined races, and final League results not ready on night (thanks to GP for these). Other results included: 3000: 4 R Kay 8:47.8; 5 N Shrubb 8:55.1 (a pb?); 6 Terry Wall 8:55.4 (returning to competition after injury, and watched by coach JA).
MoM awards likely to go to Kirsty Hutton and a choice between Sturrock, Hall and Thompson.

New Balance/Running Fitness Auckland Castle 10km Road Race.
Bishop Auckland. Sun. 15th Aug.
Ernest Kimeli, made it six wins out of six for Kenyan athletes, when gaining an emphatic victory at yesterday's New Balance/Running Fitness Auckland Castle 10km Road Race. A sedate opening kilometre of 3:07, put paid to any record times, but the manner of Kimeli's change of pace in the second half of the race, was eye catching. Kimeli (18), third in this year's World Junior Cross Championships, was content to run with fellow countrymen Julius Kimtai (3 times a winner here), and Kipkemoi Katui and Swiss Ethiopian, Tesfaye Eticha, until the halfway point (14:48), before opening up a 15m lead in the next kilometre. From 8km to 9km, Kimeli extended his advantage by another 100m with a  2:41 split, and he came home 33secs clear of Kimtai, with the second 5km covered in a very fast 14mins 8secs. Katui and Eticha came next, followed by the first Briton, Glynn Tromans, who stayed in contact with the leaders, for 6km. Tromans also won the incorporated A.A.A of England and Inter Counties' title. He had already won this year's Inter County Cross Country as well as English National title. Leading the region's runners home in 7th place, was Steve Hepples, from Cleveland. Hepples also had the consolation of taking the bronze medal in the A.A.A and silver in the CAU championship, and leading the North East team to the silver medals, behind Greater Manchester. He was ably supported by Mark Hudspith (16th) and Neil Wilkinson (17th), who also (along with David Swinburne), helped Morpeth to the A.A.A bronze medals. Tom Doughty of Sunderland was the leading veteran in 35th position.
Natalie Harvey from South London easily won the Womens' race, finishing in 33rd position in the 650-strong field. The former Australian was never troubled, passing halfway in 16:12. This was inside course record pace, but the heat told in the second half of the race, but she still came home in   the fastest time on British roads, this year. Harvey also had the consolation of leading her club, to the incorporated team title. Second home was 2002 winner, Miryam Wangari of Kenya, in the same position she occupied in 2003. Another Kenyan, Monicah Otwori finished 3rd. First North East athlete was Michelle Holt in 15th place (96th overalll). She was ably supported by Aiveen Fox (17th) and Judith Nutt (24th), as the North East took the bronze medals behind Surrey. Durham University student Olivia Walwyn (14th) helped Norfolk to the silver medals. In the A.A.A team event, the Newton Aycliffe line-up of Julia Atkinson, Susan Milburn and Pat Elwood took silver, and the Derwentside squad of Sue Laws, Johanne Crawford and Carol Greenwood, took bronze.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 16th August 2004).

Additional Comments: Most of info used, though preceded by article on Jared Deacon (see forthcoming Weekly Round -up), which was not written by me. Since found out that P Nicholls competes for Tipton, which places them first team (though nothing said at presentation). Also some of Norwich county runners were not listed as "City Of", which puts them as 2nd A.A.A womens' team. 643 finishers (joint last time: 73:32). I think this is a record. Thanks go to Mrs Waugh and assistant for results. Weather very humid on course, which affected times. A lot cooler in Castle grounds. Km splits were: 3:07, 5:57, 8:51, 11:45, 14:48, 17:47, 20:39, 23:20, 26:05. Surprised Womens' teams were worked on overall positions, but as it happens it made no difference. Not sure if Harvey's time is pb, so did not refer. Apparently, there were "problems" with Inter County results, so could be subject to change. If Robinson did win title, what county did she compete for ?
Celebrity competitors included: 354 M Stephenson 49:03; 378 D Whitmore 49:36; 502 R Laverick 55:17 (3rd M70) (had not been well lately).
Heaton fielded 4 competitors: 238 Allen Mulliss 44:45; 314 David Wright 47:30; 324 Eric Appleby; 610 George Routledge 65:54. They were 29th team.
Congratulations to Max Coleby and team for another excellent event. Also to Ian Bloomfield who took over from Kevin Archer, as timekeeper's recorder. Kevin has now moved south, but this time ran race (see results). The A.A.A Championship is likely to return.

City of Sunderland Sport in Parks Race.
Hetton Lyons Country Park.  Wed. 11th Aug.
Morpeth Harrier, Neil Wilkinson gained a comfortable victory in the final race of the Sunderland Sport in Parks Summer Series, at Hetton Lyons Country Park, last night. Due to having to avoid the flooding on parts of the normal route, the course was slightly extended. After a leisurely first lap, due probably to the foggy conditions, Wilkinson (8:00) dropped his two main rivals, Tom Doughty and Steve Potts of Sunderland, on the second circuit. The current North Eastern Cross Country and 10km Road champion, will have his next race in Sunday's Auckland Castle 10km, when he represents the North East in the incorporated Inter Counties Championship. Dianne Henaghan of Chester Le Street, having her second race, on her return to competition, easily won the Womens' race. Running at very even pace (8:53 at halfway), Henaghan came home with 27secs to spare over Michelle Holt of Sunderland, with Durham-based Bingley Harrier, Meryl Dodd in third place.
Result.  Distance 5km.
1 N Wilkinson (Morp) 15:38; 2 T Doughty (Sun, M40) 15:46; 3 S Potts (Sun) 16:02; 4 G Lancaster (Sun) 16:40; 5 A Roberts (CleS) 16:47; 6 R Rush (Sun, M40) 16:51; 7 D Ellis (Sun, M40) 16:52; 8 Mark McLeod (Els) 17:14
M50: G Pemberton (NE Vets) 18:28  M60: R Wilson (Sun) 19:22
Women: 1 D Henaghan (CleS, W35) 17:48; 2 M Holt (Sun) 18:15; 3 M Dodd (Bing, W35) 18:31; 4 K Waugh (CleS) 18:51; 5 J Battersby (Elv, W40) 19:28; 6 J Elliott (Els) 19:48; 7 G Barry (H&P, U20) 19:55; 8 C Bowman (CleS, W40) 20:09  W45: D Elliott (CleS) 20:14
(Newcastle Journal: Thurs. 12th August 2004).

Additional Comments: Not used, but report (edited) appeared on Fri (13th). Will resubmit results for Mon (16th). Weather very mirky and started to rain halfway through. A lot colder than of late. Extended course probably about 5km (was 4.8km). 72 finishers (last time: 31mins approx). Certainly the classiest (and largest ) Womens' field (about 20), since Series began. As results were done by hand, could not get as much info as I wanted on night. The performance of Allen Mulliss was overlooked (about 20:30). George Routledge was 70th (29:08 e) (only two from Heaton).

Sherwoods Vauxhall Darlington 10km Road Race.
Sun. 8th Aug.
Border Harrier Mike Scott overcame the hot conditions, to win yesterday's Sherwoods Vauxhall-sponsored Darlington 10km Road Race. Scott soon dropped his main challenger, former Quakers athlete, Barry Stephenson, on the two lap course, holding an 8secs lead at halfway (15:50). The advantage was extended to 48secs at the finish line, with Scott also leading his club to the team title. Steve Potts of Sunderland overhauled clubmate and leading veteran, Tom Doughty, in the closing stages to take third place. Susie Rutherford of Darlington, successful in 2002, gained victory in the Womens' race, finishing 40th in the field of over 800 runners. Rutherford dropped clubmate, Bernadette Taylor (having her first race after being sidelined since March), shortly after the halfway point (18:30), coming home with 29secs to spare. Another local girl, Dawn Richardson of Quakers finished 3rd.

Ian Archbold was lying 4th at halfway. Team results are completely unofficial. Celebrity competitors included: 310 Dave Whitmore 49:14; 354 Mal Stephenson 50:27 (BK is still in IoW). However a last minute call for lift ended in disappointment, as I had already left home.

Veterans A.A - North East Pentathlon Championships.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.  Sat. 7th Aug.
John Scott of North East Veterans, was the only record breaker at Saturday's Pentathlon Championships, at Jarrow, bettering the old figures in the M65 category by 18pts. Alan Readman of Houghton and Peterlee won the M45 title, for the 4th successive year.
In the Open 200m, Gateshead's Eric Smart suffered his first ever defeat by another North East veteran in a sprint event, for 8years, when narrowly losing to current New Years Day Sprint Handicap champion, George Charlton. Smart (also a New Year Handicap winner) giving 7 years to Charlton, had recently gained four medals including a 4 x 400 relay gold, at the European Veterans Championships, in Denmark.

Additional Comments: Most of report used, but twisted final words, to suggest Charlton (41) won 4 medals ! Only ten entries for Pentathlon (P Young was absentee). Weather was bright and hot, but quite windy on back straight. Meeting lacked a starter and there was only one timekeeper, so times probably not 100% accurate. George Routledge stats were: 2.93, 18.49, 40.5, 19.49, 7:26.0 (his Long Jump and 200m scored nil points). Reg Checkley's stats were: 3.10, 17.76, 33.1, 21.52 and 6:18.1.

Morpeth 10km Road Race.
Tues. 3rd Aug.
Morpeth Harrier, Neil Wilkinson was a comfortable winner of his own club's 10km Road Race, pulling away from his nearest challenger, Jonathon Archer of Low Fell after 2M.  David Swinburne also of Morpeth passed Archer in the closing stages, to take second place. Wilkinson also added the North Eastern Counties' title, to that won over the Cross Country in December. The humid conditions affected times, but Alyson Dixon of Sunderland was untroubled in winning the Womens' race, with Aiveen Fox of Morpeth and Michelle Holt of Sunderland, taking the minor awards.
Result.

(Newcastle Journal: Thurs. 5th August 2004).

Additional Comments: All used. Results courtesy of Val Gill. Sent a day late as I did not get home till 10.00pm. 225 finishers (last time: 78:59). I gather 108 entries on night and 150 advanced. Weather very warm but menacing clouds. Started drizzling when race was nearly over. Halfway time was 15:28, but suspect was placed slightly short of true point. Unfortunately there were no mile markers (should be for championship race), but as always an excellent event, and well organised. Went round in lead car driven by Jim Alder, who said Hudspiths were no longer with LD. Other placings included: 85 Sara Evans (11L) 42:04; 95 Anita Nott (12L) (42:53) and 167 Dave Whitmore 49:07.
Heaton had a good turn out (though only three advance entries): Performances were: 20 John Moore 36:13 (he seemed a lot happier with run); 56 Chris Auld 40:31; 63 Jeff Wilson 40::56; 76 Howard Gold 42:27 (2nd M60); 93 Scott McEntee 42:41; 100 Allen Mulliss 43:08; 103 Janet Young 43:08 (13L); 113 Susan Auld 43:52 (16L); 120 C Dolman 44:09; 140 Jenny Friend 45:50 (21L); 166 Pam Gold (31L); 173 Rachel Kane 49:47 (34L).

National Young Athletes League.
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. Sun. 1st Aug.
Hallamshire and Birtley dominated the two final National Young Athletes matches at Jarrow, yesterday. With still some results to include, Birtley would still win the Division 2 North East fixture, maintaining their unbeaten record, taking the title and gaining promotion for next season. The Durham club also provided the best performer, when Rebecca Pottinger won the Under 15 high Jump, with a Grade 1 standard leap of 1.66m. Unfortunately Rebecca had been injured early in the season, and was unable to compete in the major championships. Durham also performed well with North Eastern champion, Rebekah Wilmshurst gaining a sprint double in the Under 15 age-group. In the same category, Samantha Coleby, who had just returned from holiday in Sussex, the same morning, won an exciting 800m from Jarrow's Steph Crowell. Coleby also won the Long Jump and B 200m. Sunderland's Lisa Cowell, the National Youth Clubs champion, won the Under 17 300m in a personal best time. Shildon's Kate Avery made a brave attempt on the League record in the Under 13 1200m, but still clocked one of the fastest times in the rarely-run event.
