North of England Track and Field League.
Sat. 31st July.
Middlesbrough AC easily won the Division 2 title after their home match
at Clairville Stadium. The Teessiders must now compete in a qualifying
match for Division 1 status, in September.
Middlesbrough were well repesented by Junior athletes, with James Minter,
the English Schools' bronze medallist, winning the 800m ahead of World
Junior 400m representative, Richard Buck of Rowntrees. Buck also won the
200m and High Jump. Morpeth's Paul Reed won the Shot and Discus, with clubmate
David Swinburne taking the 5000m. The Northumberland squad were stronger
in the Womens' events. Included in their victories were Elaine Telford
(100m), Aiveen Fox (3000m) and Julia Straker (Triple Junp). Scarborough
won both the Division 3 match and title at Darlington. Best local performances
came from North Shields Poly teenager, Jenny Graham, who won the 100m and
200m.

Additional Comments: All info used. Results courtesy of Andy Ward and
Stuart Pailor respectively. Apologies to James Minter, who was actually
Schools' silver medallist. I gather weather at Darlington was glorious
(dull in Newcastle). I also gather there was a poor turn-out from Morpeth,
at Middllesbrough. Other results from this match included: 200: 2 D Smith

According to AW, Claire Moore-Griss won Discus at Division 3 match

understand Fiona Crompton won Discus and Javelin in Division 2 match..

Victorian 10km Road Race.
Marske-by-the-Sea. Sun. 25th July.
Michael Jefferies of Billingham Marsh House Harriers, was a clear winner
of yesterday's Victorian 10km Road Race, at Marske. Although the course
held mainly on the sea front was flat, times were affected by the strong
wind that was prevailing. As the opening loop of the normal route had changed,
the winning time of 35mins 31secs, can be classed as a course record. John
Ketley of Beverley took second place ahead of Robert Johnson. Bill Bingham
of Loftus, was the first veteran, finishing in 5th place. Hartlepool's
Tracey Waller won the Womens' race finishing in 22nd position overall.
Mary Hart of Dark Peak Fell Runners, was the leading veteran in 2nd place.

Additional Comments: All info used. Faired up after heavy rain, becoming
bright but very blustery. Race Headquarters had moved from Bydales School,
which meant altering route of early part of race. 118 finishers (GR was
118th in 64:22). Sorry to say this was the poorest standard at front, for
any Road Race, I have been to. Mark Slessor was first Tyneside runner (15th

cancelled Shot, without GR's knowledge, which meant he could have ran 5000m
(luckily for officials he did not). Eric was on target for sub 13mins,
even on last lap, but he did not run to the line.

Sunderland 5km Road Race.
Silksworth Sports Complex. Wed. 21st July.
New Morpeth recruit, Martin Scaife took 2secs off Michael Openshaw's
2002 course record, to win last night's Sunderland 5km Road Race at Silksworth,
and took with it the incorporated North Eastern Counties' title. Scaife,
who also took 2mins off the old record in last week's Darlington Pitstop
10km, pulled away from the leading group of 6 athletes, halfway round the
second of the two laps around the Sports Complex. Morpeth clubmate Mark
Hudspith took second place, ahead of A.A.A Junior 5000m champion, Ryan
McLeod of Elswick.
In the near perfect conditions, Morag McDonnell of Chester Le Street,
sidelined with illness for a few weeks, showed no after effects, repeating
her 2003 victory in the Womens' race and also equalling clubmate Dianne
Henaghan's 2002 record. McDonnell finished in 17th position in the 220
strong field, comfortably defeating Hannah Wootton of Newcastle University,
and the host club's Michelle Holt.

Weekly Round-up
(to 18th July).
Dean Macey gained the Olympic qualifying B standard at Hexham (18th
July) (Day 1 see below). He scored 7842pts winning by 110pts from long-time
leader W Frullani (Italy). His Day 2 performances were 14.88 (110H), 46.72m
(DT), 4.40m (PV), 55.42m (JT) and 4:25.56 (1500m). Apparently he did not
start 1500m until 8.40pm. Main reasons for hold-ups were: A long U20M Pole
Vault, and the setting up of photo finish to run Hurdles in opposite direction.
There was no rain, despite what was said in National Press reports. The
only other known result is U20M; 1 B Callinan (Ire) 6189pts; 2 J Stacey
5869pts (11.5 100, 6.04m LJ, 17.34m 110H, 29.47m DT, 3.20m PV, 45.81m JT);

National Young Athletes League.
Division 1 at Jarrow. Sun.18th July.
Morpeth Harriers narrowly won their fourth fixture of the National
Young Athletes League, at Jarrow, yesterday, defeating Harrogate by a mere
3pts. Morpeth provided the only person to gain a Grade 1 standard, when
Delyth James in a rare outing over 3000m, clocked a fast time for the Under
age-group of 10mins 10.4secs. Earlier she had easily won the 800m. Ben
Jones of Morpeth gained a double victory in the Under 15 High Jump and
Long Jump, his performance in the latter taking the best male field eventer
award. The best track performance by a male athlete came from Ricky Stevenson
of New Marske, who narrowly defeated Elswick's Jonathon Pearson in a fast
Under 17 800m. Although 4th in the competition, Elswick gained some consolation
when Sarah Dodd, gained the best Field performance award, when winning
the Under 17 Discus.

*Winners of best performance awards.
(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 19th July 2004).
Additional Comments: Most of info used. Weather bright but breezy. Surprised
at numerical strength of Harrogate. Have listed most of region's winners,
but some of weaker performances omitted. Interesting double by Russell
Best (NM), who was 4th in Schools Cup XC in winter. Delyth James (only
U17W competitor) ran with combined U15/U17B 3000m. Pearson and Donnelly
also finished 2nd in 200m races. Another well organised metting by Morpeth
Harriers. Not sure of current league placings, and neither are competing
clubs ! However, Elswick are sadly bottom, with an increasingly smaller
squad. However, adding a helping hand was Graham Lancaster, with some of
pupils of West End College. At the Premier League fixture at Blackpool,
Middlesbrough finished 3rd. Yusuf Aliu won U15 100 (11.4) and 200 (23.3).
Gateshead, I think, won their match at York, though no scores were
given. Selected Gateshead performances included: U17 100/200: R Harrison

Hexham International Combined Events Meeting.
Tynedale Athletics Park. Sat. 17th July.
Dean Macey is on course to break the Olympic Qualifying standard, after
the halfway point in the Senior Mens' Decathlon, at yesterday's International
Combined Events Meeting, at Hexham. The 2001 World bronze medallist, lies
third with a score of 4012pts, behind William Frullani of Italy, who is
well ahead of the field with 4332pts. Both athletes are after the qualifying
mark of 8000pts, all though in reality Macey, would be more than happy
with the B standard of 7700pts. After a tentative start with 11.34secs
in the 100m, he leapt 7.33m in the Long Jump, threw the Shot 15.18m, cleared
1.95m in the High Jump and clocked 50.47secs in the 400m.
English Schools High Jump champion, Emma Morris of South Shields, leads
the Under 20 Womens' Heptathlon, which also incorporates the North Eastern
and Northern championship, by nearly 200pts. She started very well winning
her two strongest events, the 100m Hurdles in 14.5secs, and High Jump (1.71m),
and after a minor hitch in the Shot, easily won the 200m in 25.20secs.
With conditions being ideal after the first two hours of the meeting,
there were large fields in the two BMC races. Steven Horn of Elswick won
the Mens' race (3:53.01) from Ryan Stephenson of North Shields Poly (3:53.40)
and Andy Toward of Morpeth (3:55.40).
Sam Hart (Gateshead) (4th in the English Schools 800m) clocked a personal
best time of 4mins 35.51secs, to win the Womens' race, from R Woodnutt
(Leeds) (4:38.86) and Ashley Gibson (Elswick) (4:40.63).
Additional Comments: This is report (by request) sent for Sunday Sun
(18th July). However, it was not used, and pa version was included. However,
only mention of Macey made. Weather very wet for first two hours, but eased
off and was a beautiful afternoon. Very little wind throughout. Conditions
plus setting up of photo finish, caused meeting to fall behind time, with
Senior Decathlon starting an hour late (12.00). Meeting started at 9.30am,
finishing at 6.50pm (90 mins late). Among other performances, Craig Crawford
Glanville clocked 50secs in 400m of Junior Decathlon, but was only lying
6th. BMC fuller info/results see above. Found out that going on during
meeting was North East Pole Vault competition. Results were: Sen M: M Christie
4.85m U17: R Dixon 3.05m U13: T Parkin 2.25m U15G: S
Scott 2.95m.

Additional Comments: Only results sent due to time lapse. 76 finishers,
which is lowest I can remember. However, much bigger turn-out in U11/15
races. Thanks to Low Fell computer team (including Kath Kelly) for results.
Ted Joynson turned up late, and went off only 7mins ahead of field. He
finished 76th in 60:03 (+ start). However I think he did not cover the
full second loop, as he was no further behind, at halfway than at finish.
Meeting marred by news of death of Jimmy Hedley, in hospital, on I think
the early hours of same morning. He was 77. A minute's silence was obseved
before start. Robertson took lead after about 400m. Mal Stephenson (surprisingly
Brian Kirkley was in attendance) finished 46th in 38:37 (2nd M60) and David
Tait finished 74th in 50:38. Apart from John Moore, Heaton were represented
by Chris Auld (24th in 32:58) and Steve Lancaster (30th in 33:36).

Heaton Harriers Women Only Dene Run.
Mon. 12th July.
Durham University student, Aiveen Fox, running in the Morpeth Harriers
colours, won last night's 14th Heaton Harriers Women Only Dene Run. In
the damp conditions, Claire Smallwood of Jarrow and Hebburn, successful
in the 5 previous years, soon headed the field, opening up a 50m lead after
2km. However, a recent lack of race fitness showed, as she was overhauled
by her closest pursuers in the closing stages. Fox crossed the finish line
with 7secs to spare over the strong finishing Michelle Holt of Sunderland.
Sian Ellison also of Morpeth, took third place, ahead of Smallwood. Gwenda
Cavill of Morpeth, was the leading veteran in 10th place, ensuring the
Northumberland club, took the team trophy, from Jarrow and Hebburn, who
had won the title for the previous 3 years.

of George Ogle. Weather damp during race, but rain heavy from 5.30 - 7.00pm
(exact opposite of what weather forecast said), which would have affected
turn-out. 184 finishers (last time: 36:44). Better than 2003, but "Run"
at nearby Gosforth Park, the day before, must affect entry (230 advance
+ approx 20 on night). Still a successful event (the classiest top ten,
probably of all 14 promotions) and all credit to Mr and Mrs Mulliss for
their efforts, plus of course George Routledge. Heaton's other performances

English Schools Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium. Day 2. Sat. 10th July.
Durham and Cleveland had good cause to celebrate, on the second day
of the English Schools Track and Field Championships, at Gateshead on Saturday.
Durham took 3 gold medals, while Cleveland won the Group C Junior and
Senior Boys' trophies and were joint winners with Bedfordshire, in the
overall competition.
The Championships were returning to the North East for the first time
in nearly thirty years, and although overcast most of the time, there was
little rain and thankfully on finals day, there was little wind.
Starting Durham's gold medal run, was Lewis Robson of Biddick College,
Washington. Successful in the Junior 400m at Nottingham, 2 years ago, Robson
took the Intermediate title, impressively pulling away from his rivals
in the final 30m. He bettered his previous figures, which were set when
winning a recent Heptathlon competition, by a full second.
Emma Morris of St Josephs School, Hebburn, the recent A.A.A champion,
won the Senior Girls' High Jump, with a lifetime best clearance of 1.81m.
However, this was still 1cm short of the standard required, to have taken
her to this week's World Junior Championships, in Italy. Durham gained
another High Jump gold when Philip Collins (Carmel College, Darlington),
a relative novice in competitive athletics, won the Junior High Jump on
countback. Durham gained another medal when Laura McMichael was promoted
to third place in the Intermediate 300m Hurdles, after the winner was disqualified.
Cleveland, gained the most medals, though there were no gold. Yusuf
Aliu, who lost his balance in the final strides of the Junior Boys' 100m,
took the silver, with team mate Richard Kilty finishing third. The Sprint
Relay team of Adam Allison, Kilty, Joe Corrigan and Aliu also took the
bronze medal. James Minter was a close 2nd in the Senior 800m, with a personal
best time, and Jonathon Taylor was 3rd in the Inter 1500m. Gavin Hill,
the 2003 Intermediate champion, finished 3rd in the Senior Discus.
Host county Northumberland, who can be proud of staging a very successful
Championships, had to be satisfied with two bronze medals. Kieran
Flannery was 3rd in the Senior 400m Hurdles and more surprisingly Lewis
Timmins smashed his personal best time, to finish 3rd in the Senior 3000m.
Special mention should also be given to Jenny Graham (4th in the Inter
200m), Ryan Stephenson (4th in Senior 1500m), and Jonathan Young, who also
easily clocked a personal best, when finishing 7th in the Inter 3000m.
The Fleary family provided Cumbria's success with A.A.A champion, Joseph
winning the Senior 110m Hurdles and younger sister Rachael finishing 2nd
in the Junior Javelin

Weather was damp at times but little wind especially in early session.
Overall trophy results courtesy of Andy Ward initially (though not quite
accurate). Cleveland and Bedford were joint winners in Senior Boys' contest.
Overall Cleveland 4th (behind Gloucestershire). Also (courtesy of website)
Northumberland 3rd in Senior Boys (Group B) and Cumbria 1st in Junior Girls
(Group C). Robson misses Schools International as he is on holiday, therefore
for first time in many years, no North East representative in this event.
Excellent run by Timmins, who was only 7th with 500m remaining. Scott Henderson
fell at last Hurdle, when lying 2nd or 3rd. Durham Inter Girls Relay team,
who were quite strong on paper, dropped baton in heats. Given the ideal
conditions, surprised that IG 3000m winner Emily Pidgeon (a normally aggressive
runner) did not go for record. She only broke away after 600m and was being
closed on at finish, just breaking 10mins (Later found from AW, she was
suffering from cold). Stacey Smith did not contest JG 800m final (she had
bad reaction to some pain killers), but did carry the flag when leading
the parade, along with Kirk Wilson (who dropped out of SB 1500m, with 2
laps remaining) and another girl (not sure who?). Not sure of line-up on
Northumberland IB Relay team. I thought Dean Daniel was a clear third in
200m, but photo finish proved otherwise. First two in this event competed
in A.A.A Championships, the day after. Other performances included: SB
HJ: 7 J Stacey 1.95m and SG LJ: 7 R Abbs 5.34m. Was expecting Adrian Holliday
to run SB Steeplechase, but he was another absentee. Among the celebrity
guests were Jonathon Edwards, Paul Dickinson and David Moorcroft, the first
two I think on Friday only. Among the celebrity stewards were Ted Baty,
Tom Hanson and Natalie Dawson.
As a special bonus, listed below is Sunday Sun report (11th July).
The region had a successful time on the second day of the English Schools
Track and Field Championships, at Gateshead International Stadium, with
Durham taking the main honours. They provided three gold medallists, with
two in the High Jump. Lewis Robson from Biddick College, Washington, the
2002 Junior champion, impressively pulled away from his rivals in the last
30m, to win the Intermediate 400m in a time of 48.20secs, taking a full
second off his previous best figures.
Philip Collins
(Carmel College, Darlington), a relative novice in competitive athletics,
won the Junior High Jump on countback, with a leap of 1.84m.
Laura McMichael (Durham) crossed the line in 4th place in the 300m
Hurdles (45.39) but was awarded the bronze medal, after the winner was
disqualified.
Cleveland, joint winners of the overall minor counties' award, gained
several minor medals. Yusuf Aliu, who lost his balance in the final strides
of the Junior Boys' 100m, took the silver medal (11.31), with Richard Kilty
third (11.43). James Minter was a close 2nd in the Senior 800m, with a
personal best time of 1min 52.37secs. Jonathon Taylor was 3rd in the Inter
1500m (4:00.65). Gavin Hill, winner of the Intermediate title in 2003,
finished 3rd in the Senior Discus (48.39m).
For good measure, the Junior Boys Relay team of Adam Allison, Kilty,
Joe Corrigan and Aliu, took third place
Host county Northumberland had to be satisfied with two bronze medals.
Kieran Flannery was 3rd in the Senior 400m Hurdles (53.78) and more surprisingly
Lewis Timmins smashed his personal best time, to finish 3rd in the Senior
3000m (8:32.52).
The Fleary family provided Cumbria's success with Jordan winning the
Senior 110m Hurdles (14.24) and younger sister Rachael finishing 2nd in
the Junior Javelin (33.46m).

English Schools Track and Field Championships.
Gateshead International Stadium. Day 1. Fri. 9th July
Durham's Graham Jackson was the region's only medallist on the first
day of the English Schools Championships, at Gateshead International Stadium.
Jackson, the 2002 Intermediate champion and 2003 Senior silver medallist,
had to settle for third place in the Triple Jump. The winner of the event
was Graeme Matthews of Merseyside, who was beaten by Durham Johnson
student, Jackson in the recent North of England championship.
With all the track finals being contested today, Lewis Robson looks
likely to add to Durham's medal tally, after winning his semi final of
the Intermediate 400m in a time of 49.64secs. Robson won the Junior 400m
title in 2002. Cleveland should also gain medals today. Yusuf Aliu (11.26
in Junior 100m), Jonathon Taylor (4:05.63 in Intermediate 1500m), James
Minter (1:53.60 in Senior 800m) and Scott Henderson (56.3 in Inter 400m
Hurdles) were all impressive heat/semi winners of their respective events.

Additional Comments: All info used. Results courtesy of Joe Lee. Weather
overcast but mainly dry, quite cool with swirling wind. Not as good an
opening day as usual for region, but some good heat performances. Two notable
absentees were Craig Crawford-Glanville in 400m Hurdles (had been violently
sick), and very disappointingly title-holder Katrina Wootton in SG 1500m.
Stacey Smith was 2nd in JG 800m heat (2:14.9 manual time), but fell over
before line and crawled over. She was treated by first aid and did not
contest final. There were an amazing amount of falls, especially in Hurdles
events. Lauren Dewdney also lost balance in JG 75H semi. Kieran Flannery
looked uncomfortable in having to run heat. A long day with first event
(10.00am) and final event (6.50pm). Just missing finals were: SM800: Ht:

North of England Track and Field League.
Division 1 at Gateshead. Sun. 4th July.
Gateshead Harriers narrowly lost to league-leaders Leeds City, at yesterday's
third North of England League Division 1 match at the International Stadium.
The Leeds team were strengthened by the inclusion of International Javelin
thrower, Mick Hill, whose throw of 74.72m was good enough to easily win
the competition. Hill was aiming for the Olympic qualifying distance of
81m, but the wet conditions put paid to any top quality performances, especially
on the field. Despite yesterday's result, Gateshead still lie 4th in the
table and must perform as well again at the final fixture, in order to
have any chance of taking part in the National League qualifying competition.
Gateshead were ably assisted by Chris Jefferson, who won the Long and
Triple Jump, Chris Boundy (1st in Pole Vault) and World veteran champion
Peter Gordon, who had a belated start to the season, when winning the Discus.
Kieran Flannery, who this Saturday aims for the English Schools' title
at the same venue, easily won the 400m Hurdles. Steve Redshaw and Craig
Crawford-Glanville gained maximum points in the 400m.
Gateshead's women were arguably stronger than the men. Titi Ameobi
and Vicky Carmichael gained maximum points in the sprints, and Philippa
McCrea won the 800m and 1500m. Nicola Baker (Discus) and Leah Weatheritt
(Hammer) also gained victories in their respective events.
