Doughty overhauled Potts in the closing stages to take second place. Additional Comments: All info used but in small print. Cold and windy (unless in shade) at Shildon. Pleasant day for first two hours at Jarrow, but clouded over and got VERY cold as meeting progressed. Extra result from Jarrow: U17W: 3000: 1 V Needham (NR) 10:46.7 (sadly only 3 3000m runners altogether at Shildon). Scarborough set inaugural league best of 3:05.6 in U17W  4 x 300m at Shildon. Alex Wheatman with a 43.1 final leg, overhauled Jarrow and Hebburn. Gateshead results sent by Angus Lumb, but about 20mins too late for Journal. I understand a corrected score saw the home team defeat Leeds.

Additional Comments: All info used but kept to minimum due to time element. Meeting finished at 5.00pm, which is a lot later than 2004 and 2005. Number of advance entries was only one more than 2005. Surprisingly there were three 3000m races. Weather was bright, quite mild out of wind, but wind was cool. Joint winners of events means that they won separate races. There was run-off for second in U15G 100m, where Kilty reversed heat placings with Stone (time also 12.8). Steph Loraine clocked 65secs for first lap and hung on well. Other results included: SM 800: 2 K Desai 2:08.8; 6 M Gibson 2:30.0  U15B: 3000: 2 N Reed 10:40.7; 3 L Baister (now Gateshead) 10:45.1. Balmbra led Swinburn for first lap.

Elswick Harriers Good Friday Road Races.
Newburn Riverside Park, Lemington. Fri. 14th April.
Gosforth Harriers won the main event at yesterday's Elswick Harriers Good Friday Road Race promotion, at Newburn Riverside Park. The Newcastle squad ended the run of seven consecutive victories by Morpeth, who had to settle for 2nd place this time. Gosforth led after leg 1, through Paul Hutton, before the Sunderland veterans' squad thanks to Brian Rushworth overhauled Drew Graham, to hold a temporary advantage on leg 2. Matthew Nicholson regained the lead on leg 3, with Lewis Timmins anchoring his team to an emphatic victory. Morpeth took second place exactly one minute behind their rivals. Third across the line were the Sunderland Veterans team, ahead of the Elswick Senior squad. Ryan McLeod clocked the day's fastest time moving Elswick up four places on leg 2.
Despite the cold and blustery conditions, Sunderland who gained their third successive victory, took a massive 41secs off the previous Veterans' course record. Rushworth also clocked the fastest time.
Morpeth teenager Delyth James was also in record breaking form. She won the Senior Womens' race and in so doing took 23secs off the previous figures for the Under 20 category. Dianne Henaghan of Chester le Street, was the leading veteran in 2nd place, with Angela Hunter of Jarrow and Hebburn finishing third. Stacey Smith of Tynedale won the Under 17 category. English Schools' International, Laura Weightman led a Morpeth clean sweep in the Under 15 Girls' race. Stewie Bell of Chester Le Street, easily won yesterday's 25th Wallsend 10km Road Race. Bell's winning margin was 150m over Kirkland, who pulled well away from Coulson in the closing stages. Jon Archer of Low Fell finished 4th ahead of the leading veteran, Ian Crampton of Durham.
Danielle Hodgkinson provided some success for the host club, winning the Womens' race in overall 28th position. Hodgkinson, on leave from the Army, came home well clear of the Heaton pair of Jo Zoppi and Helen Astley.

Additional Comments: Report (in small print) slightly edited. Results courtesy of Chris Robson. 120 finishers (last time: 65:22). Quite a cold wind blowing, which made times slower than expected. Club was given news about race future from "Safety Advisory Group". Where have I heard that before ?  If ther had been team races, Elswick would have won Mens' event from Heaton, and Heaton would have won from Wallsend in Womens' competition. Dave Whitmore finished 115th. Other Heaton performances were: 25 D Archer 37:45; 32 A Sutherland 38:58; 39 M Gibson 39:50; 40 C Auld 40:11; 42 J Richardson 40:30; 44 J Zoppi; 48 H Astley; 49 J Gibson 41:16; 62 H Gold; 67 F Turley; 70 J Bass; 73 J Friend; 78 A Mulliss 46:02; 90 E Appleby; 93 J Josephs 48:37; 100 A Tunmore 49:30 (20L); 101 P Gold (21L); 103 K Beaumont 49:34 (22L); 106 D Parker 50:28 (24L); 113 G Routledge 54:26; 119 H Craven 65:02.

National Road Relay Championships.
Sutton Coldfield.  Sat. 8th April.
Chester Le Street ladies' team stole the honours at Saturday's National Road Relay Championships, at Sutton Coldfield, winning the Womens' 6 stage event for the first time. This adds to their previous successes nationally in the Cross Country, 4 Stage Relay and Cross Country Relay championships.
Chester Le Street gained a steady start through Steph Robson (18th), Emma Waterhouse (10th), Kathryn Waugh (7th) before Morag McDonnell lifted them into 2nd after leg 4. McDonnell's time was only bettered on the day by Hallamshire's Hattie Dean. Maxine Czarnecka held on to 2nd, handing over to Alyson Dixon, 44secs behind Winchester. However, Dixon soon made up the ground, turning the deficit into a 30secs advantage at the finish line. Morpeth performed creditably to finish 12th.
In the Mens' 12 stage race, the main North East success came from Cleveland athletes, Steve Hepples (14:18) and Rob Cole (15:17) who ran the 4th and 6th legs for the winning Newham and Essex Beagles team. Hepple's time was only bettered by Aldershot's Chris Thompson on the day. A severely weakened Morpeth team finished 11th, though they maintained a top three placing, through Martin Scaife (3rd), Tom Ranger (2nd), Ivan Hollingsworth (3rd) and Michael Morris after 4 legs. Gateshead finished 26th and Sunderland (6th after Brian Rushworth's 2nd leg) occupied a lowly 49th placing.

Morpeth Harrier, Mark Brown easily won yesterday's 2nd Blyth Valley Spirit of the Staithes 10km Road Race. Morpeth's Sean Kirtley improved on his 4th place in 2005, to take 3rd ahead of clubmate, Les Atkinson, who was the first veteran across the line. Brown's time bettered the inaugural course record by a massive 25secs.
Sunderland's Michelle Holt returned to winning ways, improving on her 2005 third place, to hold off the strong challenge of clubmate and leading veteran, Ingrid Hope. Holt finished in 38th position overall. Morpeth's Michelle Woodley took third.

Additional Comments:  Report slightly edited. Bright most of time but odd shower. Quite cool. 161 finishers (last time: 77:08). thanks once again to Eddie Woods for results. Organisers disappointed with entries. They needed 260 to break even. Consequently prize list was reduced. (was a bit inconsistent). The change of date (because of London Marathon being on their usual weekend), did not help. Also fixture clashes. This is a pity as course is quite fast. Heaton performances were: 45 H Gold (not announced as prize winner); 69 A Mulliss 44:37; 85 E Appleby; 107 P Gold (14L); 111 A Tunmore 50:33 (16l) (3rd W40).

This was the Wearsiders' 14th victory in 15 years and for good measure, they gained a grand slam of team victories over the six fixtures, for the 4th time. Sunderland were led home on this occasion by Rob Rush in 7th place. Andrew Lawrence of Morpeth gained a comfortable individual victory leading all the way, despite running an extra 60m due to a missing marshal, at the end of the first lap. Elswick's Ryan McLeod clocked the fastest time, moving through to 5th place in the 200-strong field. Stewart Bell of Chester Le Street regained the Individual trophy, with Sunderland's Tim Field gaining the veterans' award.
Elswick and Heaton made it a good day for Newcastle clubs, taking the Division 2 and 3 titles, respectively.
Elvet Striders regained the Womens' trophy (they were successful in 2004) holding off a strong challenge from Heaton and Tynedale. Elvet's Donna James also took the Veterans' individual title. Morpeth's Hannah Rank was another fast pack winner, in the Under 13 Girls' event and took second in the individual trophy to Gatehead's Rebecca Oldham. Morpeth narrowly took the team awards from Gateshead.
Daniel Graham of North Shields (Under 17), Alistair Douglass of Morpeth (Under 15) and Daniel Parker of Tynedale (Under 13) won their respective races.
In the Under 15 Boys' section, Blaydon's Scott Ruddick took the Individual title and Gosforth were team winners. Jake Archer of Sunderland took the Individual and Gateshead, the team honours in the Under 13 age-group.
This was the final meeting under the secretaryship of Audrey Ogle (Men) and Val Gill (Women), who are both retiring from the post, and replacements are urgently needed for next season.

(Newcastle Journal: Mon. 3rd April 2006).

Additional Comments: Report edited a lot, especially later on. Bright afternoon. Wet underfoot at start of meeting but dried up gradually during afternoon. 208 finishers in SM race (last time: 54:33). 40 SW (34:06). The final runner was having to count for the Aurora team.
D Kirkland had easy run (he was running Blyth next day), but missed out on individual prize. Congratulations to Jenny B for gaining 2nd place in JW competition. Helen A actually competed in 4 fixtures, but scored no points in 1st meeting. This is equivalent to not taking part, as far as overall table is concerned. I think this needs looking at for future years. An emotional farewell to Audrey and Val. I hope they can be replaced. Other Heaton placings were: SM: D Archer (2); 66 D Robins 35:45 (33:15) (6); 79 M Gibson 36:06 (9); 80 J Moore 36:07 (31:07) (9); 130 S McEntee 37:35 (14); 138 J Wilson 37:59 (15); 147 C McEntee 38:25; 148 J Gibson 38:30; 158 D Brignall 39:05; 186 A Mulliss 41:10  SW: 22 F Turley 24:32 (22:12); 27 A Lorenzi 25:17. Congratulations for an excellent season for boith Mens' and Womens' teams.
